yes

Yes, but you should play the original first SMT4 is really good and you'll miss out on the characters from that and be a bit lost in 4A

No. Just emulate Nocturne.

This.

Nocturne is not very friendly to new players like the 3DS ones are, he should go in order from "easiest" to "hardest"

It's good, but you should play IV first since apocalypse is a what if sequel.

The first SMT is the easiest.

this game is like SMT4 Part 2, so theres no reason to play it before SMT4
play Nocturne, SMT 4, then this one

I never played any of the pre-ps2 era games

Except so much shit was streamlined in 4 and 4A that if he gets used to that system, going back becomes even harder.

In terms of gameplay, yes.
>PHY build is viable
In terms of story, no.
Friends are bitches.

I'd recommend at least trying them if you get the chance but Nerve Bullets in the first SMT are hilariously overpowered.

Yeah, the Nerve bullets and Zio skills make everything easy in the game.

Aight, I will. Thanks. I need a new rpg right now anyways.

Do note that IV:A has a FUCKING ABYSMAL story, it does not represent any other game's story. Most of the other games have minimalistic stories while IV:A genuinely says fuck it and uses every anime trouptryou can think of.

Still, it has god tier combat so there's that.

Why is no one recommending SMT1-3 are they too outdated like how you wouldn't recommend one to play Zelda 1&2 to start the series?

You should try the Kuzonoha games, although they are pretty different from your usual SMT, they still are pretty good, I'm having fun with the Souless army rn

The third and fourth posts literally recommended SMT3 though.

Nocturne IS SMT3

Though for the longest time I thought If.. was 3 for some reason

SMTI and SMTII are nearly twenty years old and a bit obtuse. They can either be absolutely brutal or piss easy depending on your knowledge of them and for a new player the former is more likely, assuming no guide is used.

I say Nocturne, which is SMTIII, or SMTIV are the best games for a beginner.

Anyone saying yes is gay and a faggot. Apocalypse is full of anime bullshit, and even though normal 4 had a moderate amount of anime bullshit, it was stll at an enjoyable level.

Finally got a copy myself but haven't started yet, any tips? I'm not going in completely blind but pretty unfamilar.

IV:A does have the best gameplay though, you just have to push throught the genuinely cringy cutscenes.

Play strange journey

Nothing is worth pushing through those cutscenes.

That's even harder to get into than Nocturne is for first timers lol

Apocalypse is legit the best jrpg this gen. People who rag on it for having some Persona elements that purely only deal with the MC and his gang and not the world , plot or antagonists responses need to fuck off. And even then you can just side with Dagda for pretty standard SMT the only issue is that decision is basically 75% through the game.

Still gameplay is refined as fuck considering it built on top of 4 which felt unpolished. If Apoc was a full powered console game with all the best assets it would be my favorite. Its barely worse then Nocturne/DDS1/DDS2 and a few others for being a handheld.

You're in for a fucking treat OP.

>IV:A does have the best gameplay though
Best combat, sure, but the dungeons are a massive step back compared to Strange Journey.

>anime bullshit
>entire series is based off a pulpy as fuck dime novel
ok

>Apoc
>Bad story

What? Fuck no. The divine powers and YHVH were fucking great even Stephens shit was good. Don't confuse interactions with party members like the conflict/world isn't a huge part of the plot.

I prefer the minimalistic story of regular SMT but Apoc did not do a bad job with it as a whole it merely had some Persona injections.

That pulpy as fuck dime novel doesn't have a big titty valley girl and a childhood female friend who gets flustered when people imply you're dating her.

>Has the best gameplay in the series
>Dagda interactions are great and interactions with antagonists are great
>GAME BAD CUS 10 OR SO ASAHI CUTSCENES I HATE HURRRR

Die faggot. Next thing you'll be posting that same fucking image of the Mephisto dream sequence as some sort of evidence. You didn't fucking play it off yourself.

The main character is himself a faggot.

>same shitposter

Here's a (You)

>they don't like my anime shit! Waaaaah!

Maaan pretty much same, I started playing it 2 days ago and is damn good.

I suggest you to learn to defend and timing your attacks, don't forget to recruit demons with healings skills which will be your priority to staying alive. Bullets are quite necessary as well.
Also invest your points into magic for better
magic def

No. Apocalypse is a direct sequel to 4, so starting with that is better.

So what exactly makes Apoc's gameplay better than 4? If anything the dungeon design is worse because it's nothing but fucking blue cyber wall things.

>Anime shit
>Very little of it and people are pretending its over half the game atleast.

The anime tropey shit is shit. You faggots just pretend its more then it is. Most of the game focuses on whats going on and those scenes are far and few. Most sequences only have a few moments of character development and that is all.

It's better to start with Nocturne, then IV, then IV:A. Then try and play 1+2 if you want.

LOSING MY SIGHT
LOSING MY MIND

This is not even bad compared to SMT1.

Is this supposed to be a complex SMT map?

Nah, it can be abit weird for newer players also it ruins every SMT after.
Should have been more specific but agreed. SJ's are still the best of the series.
The sad thing is that there are elements like the divine powers. YHVH is interesting but the decision to just make the conflict of law and chaos just his doing to ensure humans always believe in him is kind of conflicting. It's an interesting but to shit on those two sides and say they never actually mattered is kind of shitty.
Smirk is more balanced and the bullshit with STR in IV were fixed. The combat is just genuinely very well thought out with a lot of great and genuinely dufficult boss battles. People just found the story weak which is why people espicially shit out on it. While it is pretty shitty why people really hate it is that never before had SMT had such a bad story so people took it pretty bad.

Uniroically start with Persona 3. The atmosphere is dark enough to be SMT, but is also good if you want to play the Persona games. It’s also pretty easy, making it good to learn spell and demon names. Play the FES version.

Why do you retards play Japanese games if you're triggered by anime? Get over yourselves.

Thanks user.

>Can't control your party members
>Fixed party pool
>Tartarus
>No negotiations

It isn't about anime, it's about troupes that are hard to take serious and ruin the tone. When players are told that Tokyo is a hell hole where people survive by the skin of your teeth having characters like Asahi and Toki take you out of that. Mainline SMT has never had an espicially strong story, often they're more minimalistic and characters are more just symbols meant to represent something, but they had pretty amazing atmosphere and tones.

>No negotiations
You're implying as if that's a bad thing

>>Can't control your party members
So? Use tactics.
>>Fixed party pool
Eases you into a custom party via personas.
>>Tartarus
Fair
>>No negotiations
Not really a very hard mechanic

>The atmosphere is dark enough to be SMT
Love this meme.

Most of P3 is just doing slice of life bullshit. Even the actual story moments suffer from some forced drama, Shinjiro's death is just there for added drama and to quickly esculate the story rather then be an actual emotional and gripping arc.

I spent so long in there I reached max level before I made it out.

Faggot. Negotiations in SMT are amazing.

The point being that Persona 3, and really Persona in general, is vastly different from SMT. If someone wants to get into SMT they should play an SMT game and vice versa.

*notices your press turns

It'd be dumb to play it before 4. 4 is a good place to start.

Yeah. Overall, 4 is probably the best introduction to the whole series.

If you play 4 first, you really appreciate the callbacks to it in apocalypse, not to mention the gameplay improvements apocalypse brings.

Persona is an SMT spinoff. It's as much an SMT game as the Devil Summoner or Devil Survivor games.

>as a whole it merely had some Persona injections
Even that is somewhat of an over statement considering the only Persona part is your friends.
Who you can choose to kill

Literal 女神

It's literally an anime highschool setting that goes wrong when technology winds up able to summon demons. Literally in every single way other than the fact that the initial antagonist is a /r9k/poster who essentially does a school shooting via demons from the internet.

>It's as much an SMT game as the Devil Summoner or Devil Survivor games.
No it's not because those all different series.

So not SMT at all.
May I remind you that Megaten =/= SMT and that Persona was a Megami Ibunroku game?

Don't lie faggot, You know as well as I do that it's not full of weeb anime cliche's and shit.

Play Vanilla IV first. Apocalypse spoils the fuck outta IV.

I love this guy, he's so great. Why did they have to make him useless until literally the second to last dungeon in the game, and he's still outclassed there? Gaston deserved better.

Of course not, weeb is a buzzword.

HAHAHAHAHAA nope

He's not entirely wrong. Hell it has the usual shonen main character who's somewhat distant in class.

I thought Apocalypse was what happens after the neutral ending?

It is.

Meant for

Apoc happens DURING the neutral ending. The dome is still up.

Yeah he's a loner faggot, so what. There are also no beach scenes or tsundere childhood friends or any of that gay shit you know I'm talking about.

Have you never seen an anime OVA in the 90's? Because Digital Devil Story is literally every goddamn trope in every single one of them imaginable.

>MC is a stoic, uncaring, detached asshole only driven by his education UNTIL ONE DAY (Story begins)
>MC gets beaten up and thrown into a shitty situation until suddenly...he gets his magical power (Demon summoning)
>Bloody murders everywhere and hyperviolence for the sake of having it
>Plenty of sexual references and multiple rape attempts
>Nakamjima regularly makes lame anime statements about denying his fate and destiny and choosing to power on beyond it

Just because you discovered anime in 2014 doesn't mean that everything before your limited understanding of the medium didn't exist.

Apocalypse happens while Flynn starts down the neutral path which is why everyone is sucking his dick throughout the game, he's been helping them get their shit together with his sidequests. It splits off from there. It's also a completely different timeline so eh.

Dude, there more than his Persona's uguu kawaii mai senpai~ weebshit

Because that shit wasn't common in the 80's. Everything else, however, is just a common Devilman ripoff with more aesthetic and emphasis on international deities. This series has been extremely anime since DIgital Devil Story and insinuations that any point in SMT's history was somehow /not/ anime cliche nonsense is delusion.

Don't mind me, just posting the best boss track in the series.

Post favorite demon and track
youtube.com/watch?v=TjKrUc_EalM

In all honesty its probably gotten less clichéd over the years.
Well beyond killing gods.

youtube.com/watch?v=qDsDYCI3fyc

Step aside fucking PLEB
youtube.com/watch?v=chc1O0tu20w

yeah, bleeding macca and life stones to demons until they get cold feet is a really compelling mechanic

>Going back to inheritance roulette games after free selection became the norm.

...

youtube.com/watch?v=A6cSbof7Pik

To be quite honest, anime "Cliches" are stereotypes at this point. Beyond moeblobs being moeblobs (which have existed since the early 70's), anime tries to do everything they can to be distinct or at least interesting to a niche. Anything from "Cute girls being cute girls" to "Rampant slaughter and rape: the series" to "Subversive genre exploration" can be considered cliche in 2017. What isn't an anime cliche beyond "photorealistic historical fanfiction"?

youtube.com/watch?v=h4HXKlJRn-U

Dude, macca and lifestones are easy to come by.

Eh, maybe?

youtube.com/watch?v=08ImyEZBHcM

That is ridiculous just for a sound test.

Yeah, this game is better than Shin Megami Tensei IV. This kind of functions like a sequel/side-story, but SMT4 has some big problems, mainly the overworld and just a fucking shitload of padding and a much much lower emphasis on story compared to Apocalypse. SMT4 is a very good game, but Apocalypse feels like all of the ideas in SMT4 that worked minus all of the ones that were half-baked. It's great. I really gotta finish this before SMT5 hits Switch.

how well do these emulate?

Sounds kind of, persona ish

SMTV just started development, I would say mid 2019 at the earliest.

>git gud
>At things that are entirely determined by RNG and player skill has no influence on.

Yeah, but the rng behind it is still annoying. Losing a turn cause you rolled bad is always going to be a pain, no matter how you put it. I don't hate it (the dialogue is often hilarious), but I don't get why people complain about shuffle time replacing it either
