So how different is all this to the main game? RE7 looked like they were heavily pushing a more traditional horror game after the excesses of the recent entries. People don't seem to put out by the DLCs, and I suppose the lack of RE7 lighting up the sales charts sort of led to this any way.

Yeah, pretty much. Chris was awesome in RE5 because he actually had a defined purpose. With Wesker dead and Jill safe, all he has left is contract work - which isn't personal or particularly interesting. RE8 should have Jill come back to up the stakes for him.
