I don't think I've literally ever heard of any shit Japanese indie games. Maybe some Touhou fangame or H-game, but otherwise I think any shit ones would probably stay too obscure for anyone outside Japan to notice.

If those japanese indie games have no relevancy in the west that means they are only relevant to a very small and specific niche market which means only very specific niche games like bullet hell shooters and porn games are made in the japanese indie industry.

The hardcore playerbase in japan is almost dead. That's why anything that isn't reaching for the west is just made for a very small sub market which means that only very few genres are created, which means creativity is bankrupt.

Do you have any harder data about what genres are most common among Japanese indie devs? A quick look from the google results from 同人ゲーム at least shows games of many different genres, though is also not a very rigorous look at things. Just because the games aren't given much attention by people who don't understand the language they're in doesn't inherently mean that it's because they're shit and not worth translating. Nor does something being made for a niche audience mean it's shit or creatively bankrupt. In-depth strategy games are a pretty niche genre in the overall gaming market, no one who isn't being disingenuous would claim that that inherently makes them shit, and therefor that's why they're niche in the first place.

The strategy game market is still really large compared to the japanese indie market. Japanese indie games share the same market with porn creators, they sell on the exact same platforms.

Any respectable japanese indie game maker would sell on steam.

The actual reality is that we hear about anything that is remotely popular in japan. If a japanese indie game is good it will get shilled on Sup Forums or at least /jp/. But the reality is that we barely hear about anything beyond porn games because there is hardly anthing there.
