Owlboy did the Silent Protagonist thing pretty well, since the protagonist is actually mute. You can only respond to things by nodding/shaking your head.
Damn shame that's just about the only non-art thing it got right, though. Fuck me was that game awful.

No it doesn't. You always play as an avatar that has a separate existence in the game world, not as a self insertion. The closest thing you can do is role-play within the game, as different classes and backstories in Elder Scrolls and other DnD based games.
