All British actors do Shakespeare, that's what their entire acting education is built on. Unlike Hollywood where acting is built entirely on wanting to be famous.

The overall quality of the English dub is half the reason why XBC was the best JRPG released since 2001.

It mostly had to do with the casting. The people who got the parts were, for the most part, pretty invested in the industry since birth. You don't see that typically, for the US we either had the usual suspects or failed business majors.

It's the one ENG dub that I can point to and say with confidence that "this is really good". It finally broke my "all dubs are bad" motto. Shame 2's dub is so rubbish in comparison.

To be fair the writing of the dialogs in 2 is absolute shit and cringe so they probably didn't even want to try/

People fail to realize that besides being an actual actor he also already had experience in voice acting in minor/uncredited roles so he had experience in both fields which made him the best voice actor in that game and you could really notice it in a lot of the cutscenes.

No the problem was the casting. When you cast people whose best role was as a nameless faceless background character in a show nobodies heard about you get what you paid for. At the very least the people that did the generic blades should have been literally anybody else.

It's cheaper and dubfags lap it up anyway so I don't blame them for trying to cut costs when the audience wouldn't even spot the difference in quality anyway

I'll still never know why that is. The bar for acceptance is at least gotta be at "consistently passable".

The voice acting for valkyrie profile 2 was alright to good and had leaps into great highs. Lezard was pretty solid. With the game over quotes you don't even know that it's one of the usual suspects (that being Liam O'Brien).

It’s so damn satisfying to hear, even after beating the game that line still gets to me. You can feel the raw anger drooling out of the VA’s delivery, every scream Shulk did felt genuine. I can’t say the same for Rex’s, even with the redone voice he struggles in doing good yells, they sound so forced and underplayed.

You are right that it's rare. Surprisingly few examples of just absolute irredeemable garbage though. I remember game (as I can only think of one example though the title of it eludes me) on the ps2 that was so bad that I ended up dropping it because of a combination of the voice acting, writing, plot, and MC.

The only game I think that comes close to that that's released in the last 5 years is summon night 6. With VA so flat and bad that it actively detracts aggressively from the enjoyment of the game. And with no option for dual audio your'e forced to listen to it. I should really finish that eventually.

To me the best line in the game is Egil's scream when he attacks Bionis directly.

Malos is the literal best VA between either JP or English dub. He went fucking insane on this game, it's disgusting how great he is in comparison to Rex. I hope they re-record some of Rex's lines and put it in an optional patch at some point, but that's probably never going to happen.

Rushed voice recording. Most of his early lines are from around E3, his later lines are probably recorded some time around September-October. They didn't even record a separate line for his "Pyra" scream in Ch. 1 after he gets up from being hit hard, they just cut it from another line later.

Malos EN is by far the best of the dub, his fucking speech during the last fight was awesome. I've watched some of the cutscenes in EN after playing the game in JP and that single fucking line was insanely more powerful than its japanese version:

Rex's VA could've been amazing if the Voice Director had any insight on how to portray emotional scenes.

Alot of Nia's scenes are robbed by the Voice Director too.

Reminds me of FE Fates and how improved those same VAs are in Fire Emblem Warriors and Fire Emblem Heroes thanks to a good Voice Director.

I found that Nia started off really fucking awful, but improved as the game went on.

Some scenes fall horribly short for, though. For everyone.

There are many examples of irredeemable garbage, like Chaos Wars or whatever that one infamous one was, and pretty much half the voiced JRPGs on the PS2. I'd cast a vote for Tales of Graces f, too. Everyone but Malik sounded like a child who was about to start crying. Malik was great but fuck.
