Fighting games finally click for me and having fun at my low level

>fighting games finally click for me and having fun at my low level
>legitimately have trouble with certain inputs such crouch blocking on ps4 controller due to dpad
>buy a fightstick for the first time last week and been grinding with it in training mode to get a feel for it
>fingers are all stiff on the buttons and left hand can't find a good placement to consistently do motions

the fuck do i do now? Are there any fightpads that are worth the trouble?
gonna return the stick in the near future

>plays for a week
waaahh why aren't i daigo

if you can't play fighting games on a pad a stick isn't going to automatically make you play better

>legitimately have trouble with certain inputs such crouch blocking on ps4 controller due to dpad
Do people never use the joystick? It's much easier to do command grabs with it and such in my opinion.

You need more practice with it before you're comfortable, that's all

It did for me. I can't do QCFs to save my ass on a Xbone pad but they come out 90% of the time on stick. The issue is poor execution in the heat of the moment, but in practice it's almost perfect.

It takes much longer than a week to get used to a stick. I switched from pad to stick and I took me about a month before I played better on stick than on pad.

But if you really wanna go full bitchmode and go back to using pad, pick up a Hori Fighting Commander 4, best fight pad on the market hands down.

I don't know what you mean by stiff on the buttons, but just remap them however is comfortable. What game are you playing?

>the fuck do i do now?
Buy a hitbox, you retard. Sticks are literally a meme which prevents you from improving.

I have the hori pad with the elongated left hand side. Are you talking about the even grip one? how is that one?
I have kinds big hands and the elongated one feels okay but I still get cramps from my palm being at a bent angle

>trying to do a 720 on that thing

lol

I want to buy a hitbox, but literally everyone in my group kept telling me it's made by Smash players and it's considered scrubby to use

you quite literally slide your fingers. you can do it in a fraction of the time of any other option

lol

If I currently use keyboard for fightan is this a decent alternative for when I can't use one?

All I see is he hits every button at once, minus the bottom row of whites. How does that count? No wonder these are banned at tourneys.

>it's considered scrubby to use
Because it's frustrating to see a player on hitbox having the same execution you grinded for years on your arcade stick.
>these are banned at tourneys
Except they are not. 100% legit.

Yes, it's like a keyboard but better - arcade buttons, ergonomic layout, ocd cleaner, console compatibility.

They were only banned in mvc iirc and that was because that game was coded by retards so if you held both left and right you could block both sides and become immune to crossups

>it's made by Smash players
huh? I mean melee players have made a hitbox FOR smash, but I don't understand what they mean.

>considered scrubby to use
Absolutely not. A few pro players see it as the future, actually. In reality, it's all pretty much the same.

hitbox is a meme, literally no good player uses one.
dont fall for the marketers who are in fact posting on Sup Forums, even with a trip sometimes.

>coded by retards
>held both left and right

The game was made with a regular dpad or stick in mind, neither of which let you hold left and right at once. Hitbox literally is breaking the game and is not how it was intended to be played. Might as well just use turbo while you're at it, it's cheating too.

I have never seen a tournament player win with one. Not saying they haven't somewhere, but 80+% of the time they're on stick, and only a few play with pad, but when it happens it's pretty hype. MenaRD was on a PS4 pad when he beat Tokido on stick.

NRS players almost universally use pad however, but NRS games are not real fighting games either.

Hm that's good to hear. I guess I'll look into it when I need to. It'd be nice to have movement on the right hand though.

It takes awhile to get used to using a stick.

First, find a grip style that's comfortable for you:

youtube.com/watch?v=PsME37GrqjY

After that, go into training and try to do 30 consecutive fireballs. If you drop a fireball, restart the count back at 1. The idea is to grind the muscle memory into your head since its something new. Once you get that down, try doing it on the opposite side of the screen. Figure out which side is your "weak" side and pay extra attention to it.

Level 2 is same thing, but do DPs instead.

Don't be discouraged if you can't get to 30. The idea isn't to get to 30 on day one, but work your way up to being able to do 30 consecutively.

Once you can do that, you can start worrying about the rest of the video game. You can transfer the same idea to practicing combos. If you notice that you are dropping a combo at a particular spot often, consider practicing the part you are dropping in the same manner as above instead of just restarting the entire combo. Chunk it.

Best of Luck.

So one of my buddies gave me this thing. One of the buttons is pretty much shot. Should I buy some new guts and rebuild it or is it a lost cause?

You can always build one yourself. Will be much cheaper and you can customize it however you wish.

NRS games use more than six binds I think which is annoying on stick.

Fuck those shit games anyways.

people at tourneys frown upon hitboxes because they can't use their trained hearing to register your inputs since everything is a button.
People got super assblasted a year or two ago over a guy who had dampened his sticks sounds to almost nothing.

man built it so man can rebuilt it

>people who've been playing in arcades since 90s use sticks
shocking!

I suppose, but I'm a retard. Still, thanks for all the info.

It's not fucked, but you'd basically be replacing the entirety of the guts. IIRC none of the parts are Sanwa so you'd have to replace those if you want quality, and you'd have to switch the PCB out if you want to use it on more than just 360/PC

It's doable, but it's definitely involved.

Honestly I bought a high end stick a few years ago. I had played with pad my entire life. I put in countless hours, probably months of real time trying to adjust and play with a stick. Forcing myself to use it for everything.
I never got used to it. it never fucking clicked no matter how hard i tried nor how many people told me it would.
I can't adjust to a steam controller either, so I think I am just fucked in the brain from using a keyboard for 30+ years.
All my love for the older fighters and even some of the newer ones, none of it mattered, i can't into a fucking stick no matter what. I looked up all the ways people hold the fucking thing and it never feels right.

sounds like they shouldn't have made such a retarded fucking design decision to allow you to block both directions at once. its entirely possible players were using modded controllers/sticks and cheating at this but they never fixed it in the game? LMAO.

user youre compltely changing from controllers which means you have to relearn how to do your inputs. This isn't something that'll happen in just a week. Go find tutorial videos of gootecks n other fgc members explain it in furtherdetail. gl user!

People only recommend arcade sticks if they went to an arcade or ergonomics compared to pad. Just stick to pad since even pro players win tournaments with pads

What's a decent starter stick that isn't super expensive? Does such a thing even exist?

What would you be using it for? If you were just replacing the buttons and stick it wouldn't get too expensive but if you plan on putting in a new PCB like the UFB you may as well get a new stick.

Probably OP's pic

you put the base of the stick between your middle finger and ring finger, palm facing upward

you perform motions on the middle of the stick, using pressure between these two fingers

while practicing, forget about execution, and focus on entering things in calmly, with as little pressure as necessary, simple inputs done correctly are better than spamming out full combos with too much force

hit boxes are better than fight sticks

Well, it's finally out. Thoughts?

It's gonna take you longer than a week. Keep practicing.

People used to recommend the Qanba Q4 RAF fairly often for a starter stick. I think I got mine for $120 a few years ago. Apparently Play-asia has an led rigged q4:

I'd advise against getting a cheap stick. The difference between a cheap stick and a decent stick is night and day. Besides, if you get a cheap stick and decide to upgrade later you end up spending more than just buying a decent midgrade one starting out.

at work we have guilty gear tournaments.
whoever has the hit box always wins, followed by whoever is using a ps4 controller with a dpad, and the fight stick guys are last.

build it yourself you faggot

Sounds like you play with a bunch of scrubs then.

yes, thats the proper group of people to base the effectiveness of input devices on.
not actual tournaments or something.

>$200 before tax

I would be embarrassed to be seen using a stick this nice with as shitty as I am.

what a fucking mess

>I need to have a shitty stick because I'm not confident to practice with a good one
Come on user, do not be ashamed.

>hitbox guy actually plays the game
>stick guy fell for the meme and has to practice inputting dp for years before he gets to play the game
Sad!

It's the same reason I exclusively date uggos.

sure thats the reason

I think I got carpal tunnel just looking at that

get good. both capcom cup champ's just won with a WIRELESS STANDARD PAD. you just need more practice
>laying on your couch in your underwear
>playing against cpu/training mode
>can block literally braindead fireballs

>playing against human
>ass wet, balls are stinging
>uhh-uhm
>OHH SHIT I GOTTA BLOCK
>uhm, body block

>yeah
>wait, hold on
>how do i block?

>down-back

>okay where is down-back on this thing outside of my body
>there it is
>i pressed it

>fuck, that was over 1 (ONE, SINGULAR) SECOND ago
practice makes perfect, if you understand that just know how to do a combo and knowing how to do a combo mid-match are completely different, then you can exrapulate that for every desicion you make.

I'm trash at fightans and I have a stick harem. I mainly play other genres with them though.

looks sick, I'd buy it if I weren't a broke ass bitch

Fight sticks look so cool, but I can't into fighting games myself.

This is a great fightpad.

Looking to get a second stick that I am going to customize, should I get this or an etokki omni?

It's gonna take awhile to get use to the thing. Stick with it

For other pad anons: how do you place your thumb on the d-pad? I see people discussing different stick grips, but I'm curious about different pad approaches.

like normal pretty much

Whichever one you think will be most comfortable.

You need to practice with a stick to become proficient at it. It also may help if you change the joystick itself.

For example, my personal preference is the Seimitsu LS-56 sticks. I can't play on anything else. The Sanwa and Hori joysticks have far too much activation and throw distance.

You might like trying out a different joystick, they're like $24 to replace.

Just stick with the gamepad, it's the thing (I assume) you've used most of your life and know the best. Fight sticks are only prominent in fighting games because it's rooted in the arcade scene where they played on cabinets when they first started.

how is hitbox for someone who play with keyboard but with keys like A S D F, Z X C V and arrow keys? is there a hitbox like that? in linear fashion? i love fighting games and am quite decent at it but can't play at locals(they never happen tho but on some conferences there are mortal kombat and other tourneys as attractions) since i am just too acustomed to it
or i should just stick to online keyboard comfy

You can make or order literally any layout you want.

Somewhat related note to OP: I plan on picking up FighterZ on PC, and i'd use an xbone controller there, but when I go to locals they'll be almost assuredly running the game on PS4 and I won't be able to use an xbone controller.

What third party controllers/pads would you guys reccomend so I can use it both when I go to locals and play at home on PC? I'd rather not have a 6 button face like , I don't think, but i've also never placed a hyper/team fighter like DBFZ seriously and I imagine it might be useful for switching/DFC-ing and having who you swap to be intuitive.

so hitbox is actually custom makers, everyone did tell me that you could order any layout but i didnt understand and on website it was same layout that everyone used, but they are expensive as fuck i think i should go for an adapter that lets me use keyboard to ps4 as controller or try to make one i saw on video

try the 6 button one or buy a convertor?
Not sure if they are any good or add inout lag but worth looking into if you really mean it. I would recommend trying out the hori pad, just get it from somewhere with a return policy like Amazon and if you don't like it after a week or two return it.

>buying premades

"Hitbox" now is pretty much a name for such controllers aka "stickless sticks" (retarded, yeah) so I'm not talking about buying official hitbox exactly. I'm pretty sure there're some custom makers out there, but it really depends on where you live. As I said, you can always make one yourself, it's not hard at all. You need buttons, PCB, wires and case all of which are easy to order and make.

Is there finally a good stick that supports ps4, Xbox, and PC like the Qanba q4?

>Buy my shitty stick knockoff
How many hitbox players have actually won anything substantial? Oh wait zero, fuck off you shill.

The Mayflash f500 is a really nice starter stick, i started on it. I eventually swapped out some of the parts.

why would people waste their time making a pad compatible with the shitbox one?

PS4 and PC are the only important fighting game platforms

What PCB do you reccomend for homemade hitbox? I'm in possession of a hitbox with a dead PCB, gonna replace it myself.

Brook PS4. Everyone using it afaik.

Try the "wineglass" grip, between middle and ring fighter and try not to ride the edges. It'll take a while to get used to it but for most people sticks are better than pads unless you only play graplers or something
