I never got the appeal of these unreasonably sized characters.
It'd take millennia for the signal to travel from his brain to his hand, so he'd be so unbelievably slow, and the sheer size of it would probably collapse it into a black hole, or tear him apart due to gravitational stress.

There is literally not a single reason their universe has the same physics rules as ours.
Nobody knows why there is a limit to light speed etc. It's just how it is and it might as well be two times faster in some alternate universe becase, as far as we know, there is no rule to that.

Its a comedy with some silly DRAMA.
Overall i consider the first half to be great, it balances the camp and comedy well, the second is when the stupidity starts.
Also no, the universe sized robots dont get explained, they show up out of fucking nowhere at the end, ruin any semblance of coherency or logic in the plot and go fuck nowhere plot wise. You can never tell if it was supposed to be a joke or something impressive.

Overall a typical Gainax production. If you know the studio you know they make some of the most shitty endings in anime history, often bad and randomly idiotic on purpose to troll the audience.

There is a huge difference between pulling out a sword twice the size of the sheet you are carrying and fighting in an out of nowhere universe sized robot.
One is a visual joke that dosnt interfere with the seriousness of the scene or the plot. The other hijacks the plot and makes the focus on the joke, and the joke becomes the story with nothing left.
Yes it was stupid from the start, but Gainax didnt know where to stop, and the ending seems like it was written by the directors 3 year old child who barely knows enough words to communicate so it said "galaxy big robots" and they went with it.
Then again Gainax is infamous for those endings, probably the first that comes to mind when people think of Gainax.
