The first few hours seemed amazing, but after those first few hours it plateaus super hard. Also probably the worst combat in the series.

Never played Skyrim for more than a few minutes desu.
Character growth is mostly static, 4 shrines=1heart/extra stamina and since you can't keep any weapons finding and upgrading armor is really the only thing that makes you feel like you're growing stronger.

Which series do you prefer? Zelda seems to be something that either really resonates with you or leaves you underwhelmed because of the massive hype surrounding it. I personally loved the shit out of BotW but then I really like to explore and the emergent gameplay scenarios that occur in the overworld. If you’re looking for a complex story and labyrinthine dungeons you won’t find them in BotW.

Super Mario Odyssey is also fantastic, the act of locomotion is so much fun on its own. Mario has easily the most satisfying and robust moveset in the entire series which is enhanced by a series first, momentum. Mario can string together long jumps, triple jumps, and rolls to build up some pretty good speed. It’s so satisfying when you start to get a mastery of the controls and you find yourself stringing together acrobatics to cross impossibly long distances. The entire game has the kind of duality with it’s level design, it accommodates novice plays while also providing experienced players with the tools they need to really tear the game a new asshole with all sorts of challenging skips. As for the structure of the game you’ll be collecting hundreds of mcguffins to fuel your ship to progress. Some people say the quantity of collectibles devalues then as they’re pretty short and sweet, but I found the act of finding them to be a lot of fun. It also means you can venture off in any direction and be rewarded for your curiosity.

Both really, they are excellent game. But if you can only pick one now then:
Zelda is a longer game but has plenty of flaws, like mediocre combat, high repetition and clunky controls.
Mario is imo a better game, but it's quite short, even if you do all post game shit. The areas are also not that good, which is a big problem.

At the beginning of the game you get runes which give you abilities that substitute for regular items, but you get them all in like the first 2 hours and there's not many.
IIRC you get bombs, a magnet power, a time stop, and a freeze power, which are all unlimited use with a cool down. There might be another I'm forgetting.
Oh and you get a paraglider too, also at the beginning.
