SaGa Thread

Romancing SaGa 2 actually came to the west and we had a couple of pretty gud threads about it, lets keep the ball rolling.
Post progress, ask for advice, ask for the millionth time what these games are all about and bite your nails as Kawazu teases us with RS3 and Scarlet Grace.

Also dont forget about that spot for moon viewing.

Any recommendations as to what to take as a 5th?
I'm thinking either heavy infantry or a ranger. Mostly because I have very little skills unlocked aside from short sword and bow ones.

>ask for advice, ask for the millionth time what these games are all about
Would it make sense to start with Saga frontier and then go to RS?

I'd say any order but starting with Unlimited would work.

if you have the crusader formation a vagabond has worked well for me, you could even get away with a hired mage from the magic lab and start unlocking staff waza, Halt is very useful.

>Starting with Unlimited
Go for Frontier or jump in on RS2, thats what I didn and Im having a blast.

I've heard from a bunch of people that the whole Saga franchise is bad, but I personally know nothing about it except it's spearheaded by the guy who made FFII and uses that level-up system, or something.

Sell me on this game, my dudes. What's so great about it?

I've got only the free for all and imperial cross formations, I'm afraid.
Would you still recommend a vagabond?

Alright so I have a big question about the dojo. My emperor just died and I passed on skills to another party member though it's more accurate to say I got her killed because I liked the cute amazon more. When the next time skip occurs, will the skills that dead emperor sparked be added to the dojo collection or will they be treated like Leon's Double Cut only live on as part of the current emperor's skill list?

depends, what kind of waza do you have for the short sword and the bow?

I've confused short swords with regular swords. I mistakenly thought rapiers were called just that: rapiers.
Sword: Knee split, Parry, Mince, Cross cut.
Short sword: Feint, Sidewinder.
Bow: Haphazard arrow, Stunner, Beast Slayer, Id break.
Spear (in case it's relevant): Aim, Trip, Double stab.

They're fairly open and highly replayable JRPGs with a high amount of customization that make you feel like you're in charge of the direction of the game yourself. But they're very distinct in the way they function to a point they're either entirely your thing, or exactly everything you don't want a game to be.

They do a lot of the stuff FF2 did a lot better though.

youtube.com/watch?v=CuSczBYfNMo

Masochism and obsession.

The games lack a coherent story for the most part, the characters are vaguely defined outside of a scattered handful of events that are almost never resolved in game.

The gameplay punishes the regular RPG mentality, dooming a player, without any warning, into unwinnable states that force you to restart from the very beginning.
At the same time the difficulty curve is an extremely sharp parabole that makes sure you're biting your nails when you accidentally bump into a regular encounter. When you're just not reloading to the last save because you really don't want to raise the invisible encounter level counter.

They're all great and very enjoyable.

Out of the remakes of RS1 (not including the PS2 which I don't have access to and want to avoid emulation if poss.) does any have a 100% English patch?
I have a 3DS, Wii and Wii U.

RS1 for SNES was translated. That's what you get if you don't want Minstrel's Song.

By the way: you REALLY WANT Minstrel's Song.

on this game specifically?
>No random battles, no levels, you level your stats according with the actions you take in battle, status effects are actually important, gear is super important too, grinding too much is punished, nonlinearity and an inheritance system that makes it so that you can keep playing if your party wipes.

>Minstrel's Song
You mean the NA release of RS1 is worse?

Minstrel Song is the only NA release. The other is a fantranslation for the SNES.

Heard the PC version of RS2 is shit, how's the Switch version?

there was no NA release of RS1, only the remake got released in the west
but the original SFC game got fan translated twice

Is the Vita version fine?

Its not a big deal, on screen buttons are annoying but you can press F11 to max out your resolution and use Big Picture if your controller does not get picked up.

if you cant be arsed get it on the switch, that one is fine

So how the fuck does this termite quest work? I waited in the village and went down the hole, but I couldn't go down the second hole in the tunnels. Then when I went up through the other village entrance I couldn't even go back down.

did you accidentally dash over the hole?

that could be it, I'll go back down and try again

Dude the PC controls are shit, is there something I can do to make it less of a mobile port feelerino?

Yep, that's exactly what it was
welp

plug a controller?
I use both keyboard while sitting and controller when I want to play standing up, I got used to both

Cant get it to run, keeps spazzing out on the into video then permanent black screen.

whats your OS? it works fine in Win10

Win10, just got it to finally work

RS1 is another step in the development of the SaGa formula. Some things just aren't there, which make the game particularly frustrating to play.
For instance, you can only carry up to 9999 gold. You need to buy gems if you want to keep gathering it.
Your HP doesn't renew after battles.
Some quest triggers have odd timing or are straight up bugged.

But most of all? In a series where you're meant to control a lot of how your encounters work, RS1 has "optional" visible encounters like most of the series has. "Optional" because every map is PLAGUED by hordes of jittery enemies running around or directly at you. Even better are the cave maps where you have corridors that are 2 sprites wide and populated by enough enemies that THEY can't even walk.

Minstrel's Song not only is much more manageable and coherent with more modern SaGa games, but also provides very nice field skills that allow you to avoid enemies. Enemies also have predictable movement patterns that you can prepare for and avoid accordingly.

>play standing up
literally what are these words

>RS1
>Minstrel Song
Sorry, are you saying the PS2 remake differs significantly from the SNES one?

Not him, but yes, the PS2 remake has a lot of the things that later games figured out worked well for the formula.

ah okay, time to dust off the ps2. guess i need the NA release right

If you want it in english, yeah.

What's the difference between punch and kick? Can both of them spark martial art wazas?

try both on yourself then tell us

I picked up the PS2 remake, and its been sitting on my backlog for about a year now. Should I play that first, or dig into this game?

I think you might appreciate the ps2 remake more if yo play this first, plus you can tag along as other anons play it in these threads
other anons might disagree with this, since its a remake of the first romancing game

>Termite Queen with no healers and 2 stunners
oh yeah this is going to be the shit
how much health does she actually have

Do battles you run away from really contribute to BR? I mean seriously?

BR scales based on battles fought, not in victories alone

Plenty, you are going to need something like ki blast or mince

Switch is actually worse because of input lag

I won, I had Mince but the guy with it got knocked out, it turned out all I needed was consistent stuns from 1 guy's vertical strike and spamming Double Stab with poseidon's spear on my amazon.

Does that mannequin boss really have30k hp?
i entered this land ship
no way i am gonna beat this

You have a fair sho if you have good waza and he is not sporting his puppet

Translating what he just said.
Every SaGa game has level scaling. But there is a catch, most bosses have a MINIMUM powerlevel that can be much much higher than yours, meaning you can be having a nice time inside a dungeon and whatnot and then BAM, boss one-shoots you.

So if you get into a battle you should always just fight out it no matter what instead of running?

You can run as long as you dont overdo it

Losing LP repeatedly is worse than running from a battle you can't win / win with heavy losses

FUCK
this area was actually a lot of fun, despite being brutally difficult
don't accept requests from strangers

I'm so happy that I get the opportunity to talk about one of my favourite games on Sup Forums. As me if you have any questions about it.

Go talk to the formation guys ASAP to get the dragon tail formation. They're located in the first floor of your castle at the top right.

>When the next time skip occurs, will the skills that dead emperor sparked be added to the dojo collection
Yes they'll get added

It wasn't that hard

Adventure + fun, strategic battles. You explore the world and add territories to your empire in basically any order you choose and you have a lot of ways to customize your party including battle formations, choosing characters for your party, gear, skills, magic, etc. What's more, there's a generation system where your current emperor retires (over time or after getting wiped out) and another one takes on his mantle; this lets you build a new party to overcome whatever obstacle you struggled with previously, unlike most games where you're basically stuck with a party you've trained. There's a massive amount of replay value because of all your party options and the fact that you characters will learn skills through battle.Speaking of which, you face stronger enemies as you fight more battles so you aren't shoehorned into certain areas and you direct your character growth based on what weapons you use. Learning techniques occurs depending on the strength of enemy you face and the proficiencies of the attacking character you chose for your team.

The game has a really unique structure and it executes it very well. Definitely worth checking out if you like turn based battles and adventure.

I think punch can spark anything while kick can only spark a few. Kick is stronger, though.

How the fuck do you trigger new skills?
I've been spamming "attack" on the hero and only the side characters get new techs.

Different characters are better or worse at sparking different techs. Gerard sucks at sparking.

Anyone have ideas for challenge runs? I think playing without ever resetting is a good idea, not sure if skipping he magic research center would make the game more interesting or just less tactical. Fighting the minimum number of battles seems like it would be more about dodging monsters than preparing for battles.

Make sure to change up which abilities you use. Also make sure your characters are equipped properly. A Heavy Infantry unit for instance probably won't do so well with bows.

Should I really drop $20 for an ancient rom that I could just download?

How good is this?
I remember playing a romance/saga title a long time ago and either being too confused or dumb to proceed very far.

Whats better crocodile or steel armour?

wew, you guys are really going at it non stop.
>What's so great about it?
Some of the best and most in depth gameplay that RPG as a whole have to offer, non linearity, almost endless replay value, good narrative and amazing music.
It is.
Punch leads you to more waza that are focused on punching, like Corkscrew or Machinegun Punch, Kick leads you to more waza that are focused on kicking shit, like Quadruple or Capoeira Kick.
For the umpteenth time, it's not a rom, the game has extensive bugfixes and new content that isn't the original SNES game.
Crocodile gives you additional resistance to cold based attacks.

Oh god why

>When the BR kicks in

>gets a chance to attack on your actions
>can do close to 1k very easily
>pretty much the only thing in the way between you and mermaid waifu
what an asshole

Is it really a good idea to use a strategist as my emperor? Am I better off just making the magic facility, getting the formation and then just killing him off quickly?

BUT I ALREADY FOUGHT IT FOR THAT QUEST

Of course it is, he teaches you a new formation and even gives you a lot of free proficiency levels for THREE schools of magic, not to mention any strategist can easily wipe out entire groups of enemies easily with spells like Rock Shower or Galaxy, just put them in a safe position that keeps them safe from danger and you have a really solid shitwrecker

I love pyrohydras, their free tech and sparks.

It looks good or I wouldn't be interested at all
Don't try to take the "buy this, its a remake with so many IMPROVEMENTS" angle.
Remakes are generally inferior to the originals or add very minor content.

Yeah, buy Pyrohydras are common mid-high BR snake types, your BR is allowing them to spawn now.
You better warm your lube when you'll get actual Hydras and stuff like Kaiser Ants, Albions or Larva Queens.

I told you about BR bro, I TOLD YOU.
>Remakes are generally inferior to the originals or add very minor content.
And this is not, and I tell you this as someone who spent hundreds of hours on the original a decade ago, I would NEVER go back to it just because items actually drop now, among many other things.

So I just beat the first Hero at the beginning of the game and all the bosses I've run into at this point wreck my team in 2 or 3 turns. Am I doing something really wrong, or is it better to create a new team from scratch after a party wipe?

>Am I doing something really wrong
Depends, bosses in SaGa are meant to wreck your shit anyway, don't think you can turtle your way through like you do in other JRPGs, if you want to tank shit in SaGa games you need extensive preparation and a lot of different tools.

What is the problem exactly? If you're worried about bosses almost one shotting your party members consistently that's pretty normal at any point in the game.

Will I enjoy this game if I enjoyed FF5 gameplay?

Can't say, It's completely different.
What exactly do you like about FFV?
How fine are you with non linearity?

>What exactly do you like about FFV?
Job system and the story
>How fine are you with non linearity?
Very fine, I like exploring places even if wasn't supposed to get there yet because enemy level then get shit wrecked but now I know where not to go

The inheritance system basically allows you to switch classes, which in a way is similar to jobs. Though the game isn't as linear as FF5 and rather unforgiving. You should give it a try though.

How does the touchscreen UI work? Do I have to use a mouse, or is it mapped to the arrow keys/d-pad? Does the Vita version support the back touchpad?

I'm at a point where every scenario is tough bosses I can't beat. I don't know what to do.

How are the DS games? I get that they are different from this, but are they a good starting point?

Thanks user, gonna buy it then.

>items actually drop now,
??? did they up the drop rate or something?

What scenarios have you done, about how much hp do you have, what are your weapon levels at?

They aren't real saga

Accumulating BR wouldn't be so bad if areas weren't designed to cram as many enemy sprites as possible in tiny areas, practically forcing you fight every step of the way regardless. Basically grinding no matter what.

Well, RS2 has a freeform class system, but it's completely different from FFV.
Basically, all characters fall into a class design based on their stats(which are fixed), natural talents and sometimes unremovable equipment, while the class design has its pros and cons all characters can learn anything with little to no restrictions at all, no need for AP grind or anything like that.
There are a lot more mechanics than FFV and the gameplay depth is much higher, which coupled with the relatively high difficulty of the game might be a bit frustrating for people who aren't accustomed to the series' style.

The story and lore is told mostly in a indirect, raw fashion and a lot of it is nonstated and left to the player to interpret or discover, a modern example of that would be the Souls game, it's a good story but it might confuse you since there's no explicit main quest focus like there is in FF games.
They're good and an excellent starting point to get you used to most basic mechanics, they're also linear so you don't need to worry about getting "lost"
Fuck off with that, SaGa 3 DS is an actual SaGa game thanks to the remake, the original was a FF game parading as a SaGa game.

Just flee from harder setups

That just makes it worse since there's a lag after running, which lets enemies run right back into you.

Might be getting ahead of myself here, but once I play 2 and 3, what would be the best game to play afterwards?

I also just realized those first SaGa games were titled Final Fantasy Legends, which means I actually played the first one years and years ago.

You can avoid almost everything, there's very few areas which are tough to navigate.
I'm not sure whether you people have noticed but all families of monsters have different movement scripts and patterns to reflect their nature.
Birds charge at you in straight lines at high speed, beasts tend to sprint when they get near you, Zombies are slow, slimes are erratic, ghosts can teleport and so on, learn how to deal with each different family's movement.
The BR still grows even if he flees.
>what would be the best game to play afterwards?
The Frontier games of course.

Yes they will attack you again
but every time monster setup changes
run till you get easier one

So, SaGa 2 and 3 on DS, Frontier 1 and 2, then the Romancing games? Got it, thanks mate.

>run till you get easier one
That's a horrible advice, the more he runs the higher the BR grows and the less powerful he gets, eventually he'll have troubles fighting even easy batches because the BR grew too high and he didn't get strong enough to deal with that.

I have Ludon, Cumberland and the north Longit area. My HP is around 295-320, weapon levels around 12-16.

I tried to do the area south of Ludon but Dantarg showed up right away and destroyed me. I'm not sure where else to go. I reached south Longit and found the maze of memories and witch cave but I'm not sure what the scenario to take over this place is.

>I reached south Longit and found the maze of memories and witch cave but I'm not sure what the scenario to take over this place is.
Did you meet the mermaid in the Pub? if you did then go speak with the Witch and she'll give you a quest so you can proceed through the mermaid scenario.

I saw the dancer but when I follow her outside she's gone.
