Someday I'll be good at the game
>been enjoying this game since my dad got it for me on the ps2 when i was like 8
(yes its on the ps2, yes it is aweful 50 max pop and 4 npcs max barring the campaings)
>get it on my working class shitty potato pc when i was 10.

>realise i am only playing how i always played..
>on single player campaigns, map making.. and vs ai
now here is the thing.. i usually hate that kind of person that just doesnt try to challenge themselves and just plays vs ai on games clearly made for multiplayer ( have a mate for example who only plays vs ai on overwatch and league and it drives me nuts)
but i feel i dont know how to word it, i guess scared, that if i try to play multiplayer of aoe2 or any rts game really, that it will just be a matter of executing the perfect build order in the most efficient time. and everyone will be good at it exept me and if i do get good at it then i will never be able to just simply enjoy the game again...
anyone want to put some insight into my worries here? i guess my questions are
>is there even a mid-low tier degree of players still playing these games that i will get matched with.
>will learning how to really play an rts game suck all the fun out of it
>shoving Teutonic Knights into a bunch of rams and sending them into my opponent's base to watch them break and spread like spider eggs
I was a dumb kid so it hardly ever won me anything. Is there a unit or two that could accompany this and make it somewhat viable?
>no one ever wants to play a full game of civ5 or civ6 with massive map and epic pace
Teutonic Knights could accomplish it, you just have to target Town Centers with them ASAP instead of letting them spread.
This is my problem with most online multiplayer games; if you want to win, you have to be a slave to the meta game. The high skill ceiling of the RTS genre makes it even more noticeable.
Pic realated,
also, steam or voobly is another important question i guess.
This is what you do:
get a bunch of mates that don't give a fuck about the meta or rankings and just want to have fun playing the game.
multiplayer is full of people who don't know what they're doing, it's not just compfags
>Friend would always pick gray when we were kids
>"It blends in, bro, you'll think I'm stone"
>Play HD recently with him
>Fucking fall for it and fail to annihilate his civ and he bounces back
Getting old sucks, lads.
Iktf. Fucking ADHD "friends".
I play orange all the time.
it's the most aesthetically pleasing colour
>tfw mass war wagons in a team game
Yeah seems about right, was the main reason i couldn't get too deep into starcraft aswell
thats reassuring i will probably give it a go and just yolo have fun.
tfw i have no rtsfag friends, and the one person i managed to get to play the game with me is probably one of the worst gamers i have ever seen, would struggle against medium AI tier. though the one time we did fuck around was good. maybe i could find some around online at some point

>he doesn't play Incas for that comfy llama start
I always play grey because they're hard to notice on the minimap.
>tower rushes all day erry day
I do
>those brood war maps with the fucky colors that were occasionally impossible to differentiate between
>4v4 BF 1300-1500 NO RUSH 30 min
Why do people like this exist?
>not picking the color that blends in with terrain on the minimap
>show up as red to enemies anyways
People who can't counter a scout rush deserve a good beating
>scout stables
>make 3 pikes
>enemy just slowed his castle age for nothing
I don't get why people can't handle this.
the answer is simple
play with me: steamcommunity.com
I love Teutonic Knights. They were stupid cool
>want to play this game
>AI always gang up on me and rush before I can boom
>Can't get a stable connection online
>LAN party
>Come at us bro!
There's a mod that "improves" enemy AI behaviour-wise. Iirc bots will act more "human". It's worth a try, you paid for that game after all.
That'd might be great. i had one game where i thought having more Ai might take the burden off me, but after using the marco polo cheat I saw every military unit was making a B-Line towards me. My Korean Bombard towers ended up racking 800 kills before i got frustrated and quit. No unit went anywhere else. Even King of the Hill didn't work, because they still just rushed me wave after wave against only me. I hope that mod will help
What was that cheat that turns you into a nature spirit that can only control animals?
As someone that has played rtses since aoe1 at lan parties, I would suggest finding people that want to learn to play the game at an ok rate.
I always kept my PL in check when playing rtses since the moment you tryhard it becomes more of an excel/checklist simulator than having fun. I had a lot more fun having my friends ask to fall back for a moment before victory, only to have them gang up on me 10 mins later.
Also, try out supreme commander, fucking hilarious game to play, we usually end up fucking around and throwing titan against titan for the win.
One of the biggest problems with Age3, outside of the engine, was that they never knew when Age2 ended and Age3 started. They tried sticking with colonialism, but that eclluded the Wars of Relgion and Continental Wars of Europe. And then you have Sengoku Jidai japan, British Raja India, Columbian Aztecs, and no American civilization.
If they made a greater focus on going "1480 to 1680" and allowing for shared rosters between the non European factions, we could have had a lot more variety and gameplay use.

Word, wasn't there one that gives you a car too?
Age2 worked as the medieval era was relatively stagnant in terms of gameplay. A game supposed to be in 900 could be the same as 1300, minus gunpowder
But thr Renaissance and Exploration massively change in how societies, sciences, and warfare were considered.
If Age3 just lasted until late 1700s, even with an American faction, that would still be okay. Then Age4 could be Napoleonic and Victorian, because I don't want Relic touching WW1 after CoH2
How do you turn this thing on
People don't play video games for the lore, they do it for gameplay. Just read a history book.
HOW DO YOU TURN THIS ON
You need a TC to spawn the cars, best frustration relief for the campaigns
>Fuck you Genghis, I cannot conquer shit with 10 soldiers
the aoe2 hd meta isn't really that defined. most of the pro players stick to voobly. last I checked there still wasn't a consensus on civs like Magyars
Not him but I aced World History in high school because of these games.
But I like having fun with history
And it makes the developers jobs easier to make more focused content
>he never used the Map Editor to make an accurate representation of medieval Europe
>having 75 or 200 units max
>historical accuracy
>fighting over an area of a football field
>historically accurate battle
Pick one.
so did red become standard RTS enemy color because of commies or what?
Blue is soothing, red evokes aggression.
blood is red
it is the color of bloodshed, passion, love and war
I never said it was a 1:1 historical accuracy, like hoe total war and paradox cant match all the intricities of the eras. You don't pay soldiers 3:1 in food and gold if they've sword, and just food and wood if they have a spear. But the campaigns, codex, and geographies associated give you a basic level understanding in a fun way, and they inspired me to learn more like
Ask a common person who the Teutons, Mongols, or Celts were: I could answer that in the 4th grade because of Age2.
Bill Gates said I want a history game, and Ensemble said that doesn't mean it has to be boring

>not playing as purple if european, yellow if chinese, or green if mena
YEOW!
Because red is an aggressive color. It isn't natural and evokes danger. Why do you think all stop signs are red and exit signs green?
