The level was a seasonal thing. It resets PER SEASON.
Controls were accidentally moved to Combat Pro. Go to your settings and go back to Standard. They addressed this very quickly after the update.

I don't get the Battle Royale genre

I thought the same after trying it, but tried pubg at a friends house and it really isn't comparable. Now 200 hours in pubg and it's still top tier

The gunplay is absolutely awful and no first person mode takes absolutely all the tension out the game.

Try pubg at a friends house and see for yourself, they are completely different

It's the gunplay which is the main issue.

50v50 is still there user, people like it and they need every reason to keep players around.

The mode only lasted a week. I enjoyed it though, it was good fun when you don't want to play Solo

This is one of the problems with putting the PvP (free) with the PvE (not free). Sure, the PvE will be free later, but that means the F2Ps who just wanna enjoy PvP are forced to deal with the huge patches the PvE gets adding in all the textures and models of shit every week or 2. And the PvE players have to deal with the PvP mode adding another 1 gig to their patch size.

Why does the player character have to be randomized every time?

I'm still not sure why they chose to do it like that. And not all of the characters from the PvE portion can be played as in the BR portion. However, I have noticed that if you buy an outfit, the character stays the same the entire time you have the outfit on so if you like a certain character you can always play as them.
