The opinions on the game vary widely based on what you like. It's got cool ideas and is really nice looking, but it's anime as fuck despite all the people crying about muh weeb designs. The core gameplay has potential but each game in the series is cucked by at least one aspect. VC1 it's scout rushing and pushover enemies, VC2 and 3 it's re-used partitioned maps because the PSP is weak.
Many like the story and writing, some others don't.
If you want to try it, 1 is on PC , 2 and 3 are emulatable though you'll need a translator for 3 and they're generally considered worse than the first one overall.

It's a weird mix. Most of the time it's somewhat realistic and grounded stuff on war and wartime politics, and likable main characters. Then they throw out some magical anime shit or lighthearted filler scene. It generally doesn't get too "kawaii uguu~" or Final Fantasy tier in writing aside from this dumb, shoehorned-in pig animal mascot thing.
Personally I liked the writing and it felt like it took itself a lot more seriously than most japanese games on war, even with the out-of-place filler scenes.

Kind of between the two in the first game.
Second game is set in a high school. and went full anime.
Third went grittier, but it's pretty full-on anime as well.

Does VC go for that route? I never played VC2 or 3, but I recall the first was fairly straight forward with its relationships and everyone who had a romantic interest paired off with little fanfare.

Every VC game has had a main pairing,.

The re-release of VC3 slightly changed this by allowing you to chose between the two heroines, but original Vc3 was a one girl only game like the rest.

Even with the added route the writing didn't change much, so heroine A gets favorable treatment and gets pushed on you anyways like she did in the original game. Kurt and Riela are still the OTP and the game likes to remind you of this.
