what game??!?!?!?!

it's a book though, albeit a good one. for that matter, can a game adaptation of another medium be art? can any adaptation from one type of a media to another be art? or is what constitutes art different between formats?

pillars of the earth, a game adaptation of a ken follet novel

Take a look at the art design and say it isnt

aye

That's a trick question, because all games are art, even the shittiest and laziest indie Steam game or the most soulless mass-produced annual NBA/FIFA title.

The more important question is which games are high art and which ones are low art.

Something like low art would be the aforementioned sports titles, while high art would be shit like Bloodborne and Resident Evil REmake.

it looks damn good, i have to tell you. is it just a straight up VN? i really liked the book when i read it like five years ago.

No, its a point&click game where you've got certain options to choose from. I havent read the books, so I've got idea how much it relies on them

well i don't wanna spoil anything but if you go the whole game without getting some tiddies on screen then it's not 100% faithful

But only the DS version.

Video games are not art nor have they ever been.

They could become art one day and are on their way to doing so but the things that are making gaming more like art are precisly the same things that are killing gaming.

Think about it. Complaining about "entitled gamers" and defending your mistakes with claims of "artistic integrety" are openings we gave them when we pushed for gaming to be respected as art. From an artisitc point-of-view, they're right. They fail because the fans have the money and reject that mentality but in doing so we are rejecting their rights as artists. Gaming media outlets recognize this and call gamers the problem with gaming, saying we're the reason gaming can't be taken seriously as an artform. And they're right, we are in the way and we should be.

As far as economic models go gaming sells more like software than art. We expect it to be patched to function properly and financial success is based on crowd pleasing. What if paintings were about crowd pleasing? Some are, others are about offending the audience. What if movies recieved regular updates? Lucas and Spelberg did that and everybody hated them, yet not only is it ok with video games, it's fucking expected.

Now when gamers think back on when games were free of all politics, full of people making them for fun and only regarded as an offball hobby for nerds is looked upon fondly by gamers as the golden age of gaming.

on the flipside, you cannot discredit all of gaming because they are made for profit. movies are produced, books are published, songs are played on the radio because it can make money. none of these things are a lesser artform because some aspects and creations within the medium are baser and appeal to a larger demographic. you can't lump bach in with taylor swift, you can't discredit citizen kane because of the avengers and you can't say that for whom the bell tolls has no merit because it shares a medium with harry potter. everyone thinks something is "killing" their special interest, but it will be fine. games also bring a very special and unique trait to art, which is audience interaction, and thusly mechanics, gameplay, etc. can all be considered artistic.
