No it didnt Undertale was defined by the meta bs. DDLC at least has some good writing (the poems) and good scenes depicting mental illness. Also its unironically kino in terms of VN mechanics ("have a nice weekend"), sound and visual design.

But if you actually payed attention to anything lore wise you would know that UT is not a self aware game, it just gives off that impression until you spend another couple hours to get the true pacifist ending. Literally everything meta and self aware about it is easily explained by how Determination works and thinking about it for like 10 seconds you tard. It just plays with the idea of meta fiction, its not even that fully invested in it at all.

Take the meta away from both games, what do you have left?

Undertale still has its gameplay intact, still has a story that can work without needing chara, still a great soundtrack, still has its humor, still as its routes since a lot of that falls under rpg parody instead of meta shit.

I don't even like the damn game but it's free and short, no reason not to try it and form your own opinion on it.

I never thought I'd find a VN with a worse fanbase than Katawa Shoujo, but here it is. At least KS, as mediocre as it is, is earnest and serious about recreating a character-based romance VN. It gives you a good idea of what the medium is like and encourages you to pick up more things like it. KS embraces the medium that it's in.

DDLC on the other hand takes a sick pleasure in making fun of the people who enjoy VNs. It rejects the existing market and instead turns to gain popularity from the dudebro ironic weeaboo market who actually loathe VNs and panders to them.

Here in the real world people don't just take huge taboos like that at face value. Imagine having something like the sayori scene thrown at you, but instead its beastiality with Sayonara playing with a pupper telling you an exception has occurred. Are you prepared to live in that world?

I just played this last night. It's neat, but I'm not sure if it was really worth the time. It was ~2.5h of shitty build up of incredibly fucking generic VN garbage before I got to the 1.5h of actual "interesting" dialogue. Unless you're really into weeb shit SOL VN, the beginning is seriously, seriously boring.
I don't understand how this is considered a creepy or psychological horror game, either. Text just spazzes out, images turn edgy (wow, bleeding eyeballs) and glitchy, etc. If you paid any sort of attention in the first 2.5h you can easily see 90% of the "creepy" shit coming a mile away. Not to say that it's complete trash since there is some neat elements, but really nothing like what people hype it up to be.

Ur really underestimating the "shitty" build up. There are so many little foreshadowings and details, like in the word minigame and the poems. It sounds like you went in just waiting for the "creepy" stuff so you glossed over the build up.

The fact that that scene is there doesn't mean that they don't have similarities. There's lot of weird shit about the world being not what it seems, psychological disorders and delusions formed from madness.

The poems were obvious as fuck. You can tell one of them is depressed with the bottles poem, one of them is a cutter with the raccoon poem, etc. The only one that is a little vague until the second "run" is the daddy issues kid, though likely through a fault of my own since I didn't pick her with my poems during the first "run".
The poem minigame is also obvious in that someone literally bounces around when you pick specific words. You can tell who likes what and who the weird words like suicide pertained to.

I never knew I wanted this but I do now.

Danny actually seems to think that having screwed up shit happen to cute girls is poking fun at VNs and not actually par for the course of a lot of them. Which is weird when he acknowledges the existence of stuff like the Yandere trope.
