decent game, held back by the repetition in area 3/5 as well as bosses being super telegraphed and lots of waiting
Not too hard to improve on the original, but a remake nontheless - entertaining yet forgettable.
Enjoyed it quite a bit, only the second metroid game I've ever played though.
So I recently came upon charged ice beam strats for the first metroid iterations and it really livens the fights up. Apparently there's power bomb/phase time strats for the later form metroids. I'm not disagreeing with you though.
It was great but has the same problem as Zero Mission, held back by the original while having none of the atmosphere the original games had. A plus for Samus Returns is that it doesn't add a needless gameplay gimmick towards the game's ending to artificially extend the game's ending.
I killed metroids really quickly it's still a bother. Zeta metroids should have been introduced earlier as there are too many gamma. hell I think there might even be more omega than zeta or just as much
I don't think ZM is held back by the original, it's designed in a way they could do whatever they wanted for the remake, SR wasn't
Difference is only that the ending to ZM added something refreshing, SR didn't.
Fantastic Metroid game and a return to form.
2nd best game in the series behind Zero Mission
>refreshing
I wouldn't really use that wording for it.
I think it was more on map design, like Samus Returns I felt that some of the designs were too similar and I kind of wanted a completely new map but I understand why both games maps were model after the originals since they were remakes after all.
The stealth segment really sours replays for me desu
Gripes I had with the game:
>Environment and music doesn't really change until sector 5.
>Layout is confusing, relying on the use of the scanner instead of being well-designed.
>Random elevators that are only 1 block in height and they lack suspense (e.g. previous games showed the entire body and might feature a spooky break-down)
>Queen Metroid fight was too easy, no buildup, and the remix tarnishes the original song.
>Enemies are placed in a way that encourages stopping and using the free-aim mode every few seconds.
>It's harder to kill enemies with a regular blast now, even when charged. Best method is to use ice beam and missile them.
>Analog stick instead of d-pad
>3d graphics on a low res screen. The pixel art in super metroid and fusion are much more polished and fitting of a 2d sidescroller.
Still played it to the end and even got 100% so I still liked it.
I must be in the minority that enjoyed the stealth section. It lasts like 10 minutes and I always enjoyed the transition to the fully powered suit.
people blow the stealth section way out of proportion in ZM. It's not like Norion in prime 3 or area 3 and 5 in SR
It needs a Switch port
Personally, I'm loving it. I just fought my first zeta metroid and I really like the variety of ways they give you to deal with it. The level design can feel a bit samey in places but I like that they give you the scan pulse, because it's far less tedious than just spider-balling the entire perimeter of a room leaving a trail of bombs. The teleporters are a nice little QoL feature as well. If I have one real complaint it's that it will definitely feel easier in comparison to Fusion or ZM if you've played those. Having said that, that first zeta took me several tries to kill, so maybe I'm approaching the curve or something.
Solid 7-8/10. Good remake of a game that needed it, tides us over til Prime 4. Not much to talk about really.

Pretty great game
never played the fan version
>>Layout is confusing, relying on the use of the scanner instead of being well-designed.
I never used the scanner except at the very end when I thought I had to find something I actually already had.
Was a letdown, game focuses nearly entirely around just countering.
>>Layout is confusing, relying on the use of the scanner instead of being well-designed
I could easily find almost everything, I only used the scanner for 2 missiles that were missing for the 100%.
This, I thoroughly enjoy it and fand that it adds to the empowering feeling of the Power Suit.
*find
>Take a 2 month break
>Can't remember where the fuck I am or where to go
Really wish game designers had this in mind.
Good gameplay but the lackluster environments, music, and atmosphere, along with the fact that there's only about three types of enemies, brings it down.
It was okay, lacked more non-metroid bosses guarding the upgrades. Also, needed better upgrade progression.
I like how the game sets up Metroid 5 for the 3DS in 2019.
