About Vaan I'm not so sure. He certainly becomes a side-character to the plot in the second part of the game, but he is still important in motivating Ashe, and convincing her to reject the gods, abandoning her desire for revenge like he did.

I unironicaly thought that PE1 combat system, while not perfect, was super duper fucking neato and was a decent way at least to do a modern day gun combat in a rpg way that melded both real time and turnbased pretty fucking well.
To the point that im am pretty dang saddened that they chose to bring it back in any way to tolerably push their cinematic flashy faggotry.

Poe was good.
Leia was ok in spite of that goofy looking space scene.
Luke was splendid.
Rey was also splendid, unlike in the previous movie where she was kind of shit.
And just about any scene with Kylo nailed it, his scenes were probably the best of the movie.
That Cantina adventure and code breaking crap really was pretty awful though.
Rose was also surprisingly cute even though she looked like a side character. Her ending was really silly though but she was enjoyable up until that point.
Finn himself was pretty good though even though his plot ended up shitting on itself. For what it's worth though it was kind of exciting when you didn't know it would go.
Snoke was handled fine. They could have easily gone down some incredibly awkward and irredeemable route with him and instead they avoided all of that. Which was great.
I almost don't understand what the point of purple hair's character was. She wasn't that good.
By the end of it all though I really do have something of a hard time seeing where Star Wars is meant to go. It's not like the movie ended on a cliff hanger or set the premise for a new plot or anything. Which is kind of awkward since we know there will be more movies.

But yeah.
Great first half.
Takes a dive in the middle.
But then the second half is great again.
Though then the resolution at the very end is kind of awkward and makes you question where it would even go next.

But that's still pretty good as a stand alone movie. Ruined for good my ass and it was a huge step up from the last film.

I think they still get what FFVII is. The gameplay looks iffy, but honestly I loved Crisis Core's gameplay so I'm fine with an action rpg version of FFVII.

Van is just the POV. He's not the main character. That honor would go to either Ashe, Basch or Balthier depending on your perspective. All three have actual arcs that drive the plot forward.
