I wanted to like this more than I actually did.
It's telling that I wasn't surprised when "Made in Unity" came up during the credits.

What's wrong with it?
It's not so much that there's anything explicitly wrong with it as it is just pretty mediocre. It feels very unambitious. I can get what they were trying to do at its core and there are elements of it I really like (such as giving everyone distinct personalities and there are a few times I laughed during the cutscenes), but the gameplay engine is unpolished, the campaign is short and unengaging, the level design is uninspired, the voice acting is amateurish, the cutscenes are basic animations, unlocking stuff is a grind (fortunately there's no pay element), and... egh. I got it for Christmas and I'm already bored with it.
A big thing is that after a while in the campaign, there's no penalty for losing. The game will sometimes spam enemies and boss attacks at you with no way to dodge them, but after your first two continues in a world costing 600 gems each, it costs nothing afterwards to pick up right where you left off (you don't even restart the level) meaning there is absolutely zero tension or challenge besides minor frustration. The final boss of all things was more tedious than engaging and that's never a good sign.

Let's put it this way: barring the graphics and the actual English speakers voicing the characters rather than Japanese speaking Engrish, I'd have expected this to come between the actual Super games and 64. It's as basic "Super Bomberman but in 3D" as you can get and while that's really how it was advertised and I can't blame them for that, it's... not quite an explosive comeback.
64 had more ambition than this. At least they were honest when they said, "Yeah, this is pretty much just a remake of SB3."
>unity is inherently bad meme
Oh, I know Unity isn't inherently bad, but during gameplay I at one point I even said to myself "this feels like it was made in Unity". It just had that feel of a half-baked Unity game to it.
Lo and behold.
When your game screams "made in unity" it's bad.
>I wanted to like this
Anyone who unironically uses this phrase should be shot in the left nut with a BB gun.
>franchise you used to enjoy makes a new game after not having any decent games for a long time
>you can tell that it's shit
>you want to be wrong
better?
Nah, fuck him. I get what you mean, OP. Unfortunately, this was also the one game I really wanted on the Switch. Maybe I'll wait and see how Bayo 2 turns out.
super bomberman 2,3,4, and 5 on the snes has more features in the multiplayer than this one. its kind of crazy. its just a very barebones bomberman game
I think it's simple enough that it works and is enjoyable as a Bomberman game.
I mean yeah, it's incredibly basic, but fortunately not to the extent where it ruins the game.
And it shouldn't be a surprise. It's fucking Konami. It's amazing they did a game, so it makes sense they just tried to do something as cheap as possible.
I just hope that it having great sales might convince Konami to make more.
As someone who's owned it since launch I can absolutely promise you this game went from "irredeemable shit garbage" to "actually functional, playable, and on the same tier as the classic Super series"
As a side story,
>Have friend who goes into autistic shriek fits when you say Unity is a bad engine
>He's too autistic to understand that despite the fact 0.001% of Unity games are actually good people associate it more with random garbage that gets shat out because Poos will crank out horrifying girl games by the dozens per day
>gets an update
>online is already dead
Good party game so quite unavoidable to buy. But i can feel the dev team had no passion on it
Just got this yesterday, and I gotta say, this game would've been pretty trash before the 2.0 update. The 60fps, new costumes, and grand Prix mode make it feel like a full fledged release, woulda been pissed if it hadn't been updated.
Like said, it's a quintessential party game, and I've enjoyed playing it with my sister over Christmas. Can't imagine I'll be putting dozens of hours into it though.
There is no way this thing is at 60FPS.
The 2.0 update definitely cranked it up to 60, it was kind of the reason I bought the game. You sure your game is updated?
That's what she said lol
I've got the Grand Prix and everything. Still feels 30 or less.
I feel as though more effort went into the aesthetics and OST than the actual core game.
I'm uh, not sure what to tell you man. I know that updating the game's frame rate was a part of this update. Do you usually play like 120 fps and above?
The game is still a lot better than before, at least Konami actually tried to do somethings for once.
Nope. I do play primarily in portable mode, though. Maybe the update was only for docked mode.
If the gameplay aesthetically resembled the cutscenes, or rather if the game didn't have template-tier 3D graphics and lighting, it would be a good start to redeeming SBR. The perspective in Story Mode and the deathmatches seems like a poor choice since you're given about 75% clarity of your player's position and the other players, as opposed to the 100% clarity of Live/Generations/Jetters/the Super series/etc.
