Why hasn't any RPG been able to surpass Chrono Trigger?
Has the genre really stagnated that much?

Final Fantasy 7
SMT: Nocturne
>The game that started the downfall
fuck off
CT is the most overrated JRPG of all time.
>zero customization
>shallow combat, spam attack and heal once in a while. Overabundance of double/triple techs that in the end are all the same
>99% of the enemy encounters are scripted
>pathetically easy
7/10 at best.
thats because it was literally too good
git gud
>Muh customization
>literally every game has to have customization to be good!
There are a shit ton of games better than Chrono Trigger but what you're asking for is a game that make you feel like that game did in the moment you played it and that is not possible. It's like when you smoke weed the first few times the high is really strong and long but years down the road the high of weed won't even last for 20 minutes or be as intense no matter what you do... And that's when you go for crack or some shit.
I'll always love CT, but I still have a soft spot for the Lunar games.
Holy trinity of the most overrated rpg of all time:
Chrono trigger
The witcher 3
?
Chrono Trigger was Imagination: The Game. I'm not sure any JRPG can top what CT did
No nostalgia here, played it for the first time a couple months ago
Still blows my mind how so few JRPG's allow you to move around while reading a text box
this, why even have gear or the ability to change your party members
Cross was shit though
this. chrono trigger wasnt trying to be anything else but a good video game. Most games want to be movies, or taken seriously. Chrono trigger ends with saving everything in the past making the future right. Chrono Cross shits all over the simplicity and goodness by bringing up timelines and shit no one cared about.
Plenty of games have surpassed Chrono Trigger.
FF Tactics
There's no need to bring out a nuke to swat a fly.
Romancing SaGa 2 alone completely shits over CT.
Not that one
>who needs role-playing in a role-playing game
>implying
Unlimited surpassed JRPGs so much that only a handful of those are beginning to incorporate mechanics that game created more than a decade ago.
how contrarian can one man be
Do you know what contrarian means?
Dragons Dogma had potential and a dream dev team but Capcom rushed it out the door and it's a shadow of what it could have been
Holy shit, are you seriously saying that slots the game is a great RPG?
>m...nuh reels
I am.
You don't even know how reels work so your "opinion" is already invalidated.
chrono is not that good of an rpg. Like at all.
Please don't post these games in threads like this. This thread is for shitposting.
Yea man what were they thinking using some sort of chance based system in a role playing game.
Overrated doesn't mean bad however.
