Just make sure to read all the tutorials, don't skip any or speed read even if you played the other Xenoblade games.
Also don't feel like you need to do every sidequest you come across. When you finish a sidequest or discover new locations, you'll get bonus EXP that doesn't get applied immediately, it's used for leveling up at inns. If you find yourself getting destroyed by a boss just go back to an inn and level up or do some sidequests.
