Purely on aesthetic/design choices, since I haven't played 2, but don't really like the RNG Blade stuff out the gates. It is almost XC1 = XCX because I like both the 90s anime and notPSO looks. In some ways I respect mixing it up each game but then I wish XC2 was called XC Next or XCS or something other than 2.
Then I could use the age old "WELL AT LEAST ITS NOT A MAINLINE GAME" argument to make myself feel better.

I’ve only played the -Blade series, but I hope to change that soonish. For me it’s XC1 > XC2 > XCX. It almost hurts me a bit to put XC1 in front of XC2 because I like the combat better in 2, but XC1 just has great music, atmosphere, and voice acting.
