RadeonSI - better than AMD's OpenGL

AMD released documentation and firmware. Some guys got together and decided to use it write better drivers in their spare time.
They actually just dropped their Vulkan code base on the community a few days ago in the hopes that they'd fix that up too.

Already getting results too. RadV just got 10% faster again.

The open drivers are so good AMD actually tells you not to use theirs. They didn't even bother to include the numbers for their internally developed drivers because they look so bad by comparison.

why the fuck would anyone buy amd? they've made literal trash for like 5 years now. making a competitive card is one thing but making a rebrand housefire which used more power than a titan x like the r9 390 is just tragic. tests conducted this year still show there's still no difference between the 970 and 390 with max being like 4 fps between them. a year ago all you'd see on Sup Forums is that the 390 would be like 100 fps ahead because of "fine wine".

That's what's going on with D3D9 and earlier games right now.

Nine is good, but requires you to have AMD hardware. There's some guys right now using Nine to build a D3D9 driver on top of Vulkan so it will be hardware agnostic.

AMD drivers are so good that it took AMD half of the year to ask Blizzard to help
them figure out why Overwatch was crashing.

true, I hear Linux actually plays older Windows games better than Windows can nowadays because M$ is using a more rudimentary wine to run them as they deprecate out directx components that older games used. All the games you listed have OpenGL support, so support for them long term is safe. They're not stuck on legacy versions of Windows with a outdated proprietary API.
Valve is actually upgrading CS:GO to support Vulkan.

Not D3D9 to D3D11, that wouldn't be good. You're going from one high-level non-standard API to another which never produces great performance.
Vulkan however is super low level, lower even than some current driver middleware. So you can build native full-speed high level drivers on it.

The AMD driver still has an advantage over RadV in the latest benchmarks, but that lead has eroded by a huge amount in recent months. On the older Polaris architecture in particular RadV is now often as fast, though not yet faster like Nine (D3D9) or RadeonSI (OpenGL) are.

That doesn't seem like an issue, the games only use the OpenGL backend once you upgrade to Linux where the RadeonSI driver is possibly the best OpenGL driver around.

AMD's new competitive processors are relatively new.

My latest machine wound up with an Intel chip because Ryzen hadn't launched yet when my motherboard got fried. This system will probably get handed down to a friend in 2018 so I can do an all-AMD build.
Or maybe I'll hang onto this system and just build a cheap Raven Ridge machine as the hand-me-down box.
