Are the Tropico games fun? I'm looking into buying 5

Are the Tropico games fun? I'm looking into buying 5.

I've heard 4 is better than 5,

i've spent ridiculous time in tropico 4

Only played 4, but it was a pretty fun, yes.

Except that my save file kept fucking glitching, forcing me start the game over entirely.

>fun
Get the fuck off my board

They are really cheap on steam right now with the sale. I skipped 1 and 2 and went straight to playing 3, I have no idea how 4 or 5 is.

Depends on what you want from a city builder.

Really all Tropico 5 amounts to is 'raw materials merchant simulator'. Early game is tobacco or sugar, midgame is rum and cigars, late game is oil export. There's some other stuff like political factions and rebels, but they're very simplistic. Religious faction gets angry if you don't have a church, intellectuals get mad if you don't have a school, communists want housing, capitalists want private business, etc etc. Rebels - no matter the faction that spawns them - are piss easy to defeat. There's little challenge outside of mission objectives and getting too far into the red.

If pretending to be a two-bit dictator REALLY appeals to you, sure Tropico can be fun. It's a hell of a lot better than EA's SimCity remake. I'd personally recommend waiting for Tropico 6, like I am, and looking it over very carefully. If it has big improvements to the game and isn't a full price DLC pack like Tropico 4 and 5 have been, then sure I'd say buy it when the price drops.

But if you want to be serious about themed city building, get Pharoah or Caesar or something. The combat in those ain't great, but at least it means something.

fucking random ass tropico thread on new years

where the fuck were you guys

get 4 and wait for 6 to come out and hope its not shit.

i implore you to pirate them because kalypso is shit and killing the series

if you absolutely have to buy 4 , it's just a slightly more crowded 3, 5 threw what little complexity the series had been building out the window

>kalypso is shit and killing the series

Unfortunate, but true. Every entry since 3 has been virtually the same.

4 is better than 5

LA RUMBA NO CANTO MAS

not really, 5 is cancerous

4 feels like a retread of 3 until its expansion

It's fun in a simplistic and grindy sort of way.

You will quickly figure out the formula of what to build and when and so every scenario plays out basically the same. Also it's way too easy to please all the factions-- you never really have to make any sacrifices.

Will 6 still have Penultimo?

What's wrong with 5? Haven't played it.

Yes. Nearly all the characters from 4 and 5 are back because Kalypso knows how to do nothing but resell the same game.

You can switch out industry for tourism for a somewhat different playthrough.

I think he is back, he was the one cutting ribbon on the new bridge video.

The idea of going from the Colonial Age to the Modern age SOUNDS cool, but unlike Age of Empires, nothing really changes in the process. ALl of your buildings stay the same, you just get new technologies. The end result is your city starts to seriously clash aesthetically, as can be seen in the OP post.

Tourism never makes any fucking money.

That screenshot is Tropico 4

>Tourism never makes any fucking money.

It can be a faster money maker than industry. Look up a guide on the mechanics.

Tropico 3 was a hit and then they went full jew charging you for small dlcs like The Sims

>Trop 3 has 1 DLC
>Trop 4 has 11
>Trop 5 has 12

Buy Tropico 3 and pirate the other 2.

It's sickening how deliberately cookie cutter every DLC is. There's always one mission, one map, one new building, and one new costume.

>worthless dynasty system
>road building is somehow even clunkier and blockier
>combat remains terrible and tanks are just giant soldiers, this is in trhe game that emphasized combat improvements
>radio is terrible and lacks any vibe
>teamsters simplified
>wages are universal across buildings
>era system is a useless series of hoops for ultimately the same effect across time, also jumps from 1700's to WW2

all I remember from when I played it. I guess if you never played the series before it's not that bad but it sucks to see kalypso somehow never address the problems while simultaneously making them worse

it's not a problem with the idea of the games, and by all means managing a banana republic in the cold war should not be as easy and formulaic as kalypso manages

My argument still stands. In fact, being unable to tell one game from another just supports it.

>radio is terrible and lacks any vibe

This always confused me. Did they lose the rights to the music or something?

i love tourism. its so much fun to build an extravagant island tourist destination paradise on one side of the island while on other side you can make it a commie block cesspool of workers making cheap trash good to to exports and rule it all with an iron fist that lines your pockets with money.

>tfw no tropico spinoff set in central america during the precolumbian era to basically be a mesoamerican version of the shit mentions

it hurts

>the Impression series died when isometric 2D was replaced by 3D

Please don't remind me.

nah just buy 4 (it's literally 3 and has that the equivalent of goty iirc)

yeah as one user says it, the concept of ages should have made it cool but rather than actually improve existing buildings or change aesthetics, you only just unlock shit and make existing buildings look the same (unlike 4 where you had an option to upgrade existing buildings)

additional shit include mandatory housing to workplace requirement - so your farmers MUST live on lower houses because of the income requirement (regardless if they make good enough money, if the housing says "for middle class" you can't have your farmers live in it, unless you pass that law that reduces the income requirement for one level). this is unlike in older tropico where you can make them live in condos as long as they earn money

its only advantage is changing the powers-to-be from cold war us/ussr to more modern ones, but that's just it

good builders will be dead by the end of 2018. anno 1800 will be the swan song of the genre. press f to pay respects.

>Trop 4 comes out
>It's exactly trop 3 with some small changes
>shit ton of DLC that should have been in the base game to justify paying full price

And then they did it again with Tropico 5, and made the game even more casual to rub salt in the wound.

But there will always be delusional people that hope Trop 6 will be better.

F.

>Tropico 6 is just Tropico 5 but with bridges and bus systems, things that even a jew company like Paradox would have as DLC

Cities Skylines 2 is coming

As he said. Good builders will be dead.

yeah honestly I wouldn't recommend 4 unless it comes with Modern TImes

>I'm looking into buying 5

why? you only need one copy bro

Modern times is weird. Why do electric windmills become outdated and replaced with solar panels in the 1970's?
Why do garbage dumps become obsolete and replaced with water treatment in the 60's?

For a 3rd world Caribbean island it's like 40 years ahead of Australia development wise.

>doubting el presidente's science

Yes and get 4 instead

>tfw no asian tropico dongland
>tfw no east europe tropico slavlandia
>tfw no middle eastern iraqistania

they had such good potential on a political satire city builder

>>wages are universal across buildings
this was what broke me honestly. I hated being forced to pay ever farmer and factory worker the same, even though the workers in one were way more valuable than another

Why are there no buses but somehow metros?

tropico 4 is the best of the series

Because buses would require the roads to actually be functional in heavy traffic.
