3 is fine. It's too easy and the time limit is so lenient it might as well not exist, but it's got more than enough fun inclusions like co-op and combo vehicles.

4 was when they started stripping way too many things out and the series pretty much lost everything it had going for it. Though, to be fair, the remaining people at Capcom Vancouver did try to fix as much of it as they could with free DLC and patches after HipsterBeard left.

3 is already pretty bad because of awful stat points. You start the game with no strength so the katana, previously a pretty high tier weapon, takes like 7 hits to kill a single zombie. And I personally hate how the series shifted further and further from using every object in the environment as a weapon to crafting the most fantastical bullshit. It's especially bad in 3 because you can craft on the go and it means nothing is worth touching unless it's a goofy combination weapons.

3 also got the whole thing where you can basically "buy" weapons you found/made at safehouses, including combo ones, so after you found/crafted something you don't even need to remember where you got the good shit/ingredients to good shit.

And blueprints ALWAYS have the shit you need to craft it right next to them so there is 0 reason to "learn the map" compared to 1/2 where you usually made a mental note of where a good weapon/ingredient was.

I’ve heard that the story/characters were terrible. Is it at least playable? Is the combat fun or at least functional?

I replayed OTR recently and spent most of the time fuckin around in sandbox mode. If I just want to kill zombies with combo weapons and try on dumb outfits, would you recommend 4? I’m on the fence wether to pick it up and not expect much or just completely miss it

Not really. The combo weapons manage to be both excessive and boring at the same time and the outfits don't have much new pieces to wear. There isn't anything you'll miss by skipping it.

It's funny because they focused solely on the 'killing zombies' part for DR4 at the expense of everything else in the game and yet even that part of the game is pretty boring. The gore and details on the zombies are worse than previous games (some even worse than DR1 for fuck's sake) and nothing in the game is satisfying at all to fight or kill. They turned it into zombie musou where you just spam the same items over and over again as you watch the zombie kill count go up. Imagine going for the Mega Buster achievement in DR1 but with worse looking zombies, gore, world and items.

Fuck. I was looking forward to 4 coming to PS4. Are there any other games similiar to deadrising 1/2?
