We would like to hear you honest opinion about the game we are developing. Game is half to one year from release, so we are at breaking point in which play style can still be changed, but not for long.
As video game veterans, what things do you find appealing or off-putting from watching this short gameplay video?
Just please give real opinions, thank. (you can skip and watch just few frames, so you get a feel of the game).
I actually like the look, but there are tons of these survival indie games on Steam already.
I don't know - make it about space cowboy robots?
Christopher Johnson
Interesting, looks like no man's sky and rust had a baby. Change sounds, otherwise, not that bad.
Thomas Ross
nobody is going to watch half an hour make a 2 minute trailer that shows off the main gameplay aspects and I'll comment on it.
also before I even watch anything, these survival games are horribly overdone at this point and unless you stand out you won't make it
Henry Gutierrez
There's ssooo many of these kinds of games, it really needs to stand out. There has to be something that sets it appart. Subnautica is in water, Astroneers lets you terraform the planet, etc, what's you hook? What sets your game appart?
Samuel Williams
Nobody wants to hear your god damn sob story! Give me the elevator pitch or fuck off.
Blake Rogers
There are floating land, so main gameplay is almost in space, sound to gimmicky, but thanks
Connor Green
wow really hitting the high point of the survival crafting genre good work on the timing boys
i'm sure back when you originally had this idea it might have been relevant
Joshua Collins
>guys give me idea about game so i can tell you in a ho-hum fashion why we won't consider your idea
just say "thank you" or nothing at all, you absolute swine
Jeremiah Russell
>indie survival crafting game #358209
Serious question, what made you think this would be a good idea? Aside from graphics, (which aren't anything special) your game looks basically indistinguishable from hundreds of others that already exist. There is really nothing you can add to this formula to make it interesting unless you have an absolute bombshell of an idea, which... you don't. Sorry.
In my opinion you should scrap this entire project, salvage what assets you can and try to build a different type of game. Released like this, your game will simply be lost in the sea of other similar games on Steam and fail utterly.
Oliver Lewis
Will watch it later. It's too long.
Camden Green
Replayability, it allows player, to enjoy just to wander around
Jace Murphy
So why exactly would I play this over say, seven days or rust, or ark, or conan. At least 2 of those have floppy songs. What's this got?
See, if it had all the mechanics of a typical crafty game, but had a great storyline with a definitive goal and an actual ending, then it might be good. But as it stands, it is just yet another no man's sky or whatever, with no real goal or purpose and barely anything to set it apart from the oversaturated market of these types of games.
Leo Hall
it's trash. I hate it. kill yourselves.
Anthony Robinson
*dongs
Ryan Thomas
No man's sky had a whole "universe" for that bro, not a hook.
David Cruz
you're not worth anyone's time here if that's all you've got going for you >you can do nothing and then you can do it again wow astouning
Noah Evans
nigger im not the OP or a dev but it's in very early development. it has nothing in it. The helicopter part was pretty cool. did you even watch the first 10 seconds of the video?
John Adams
Loved youre answer. Will try to add a greated emphasis on the story. Thank you
Michael Perry
then don't make a half hour of nothing, why the FUCK is it suddenly so acceptable to show off a big steaming load of nothing and expect people to fill in the blanks? you just foster further disappointment as you fail to meet the pointless expectations set by your blank slate
Christian Gonzalez
Watched few minutes so far. It looks great, but I hope there should be variaty of weapons and enemies/animals. I'd like too see some stupid weapons used in the game, not just guns.
Adam Morales
And what's there to be seen?
Jonathan Jenkins
Man you're assuming hard up the fucking ass. The video was simply a demo. Expect nothing from it other than the bare bones idea ya cunt.
Alexander Cooper
you can wander in almost any game I'd much rather wander in a sculpted world than a generated one
games have to ways to become successful be different (in a good way) be well made
the easiest for indies is obviously being different, because being well made usually takes a bigger team than you have
this is neither different nor well made, and it'll likely flop
Grayson Cruz
Hey, certified video game veteran here. You should consider not making another early access survival clone.
Jaxon Gray
I am with him. Too many survival games. But one thing you could do is add a little story, a lot of variety in things to discover, a decent amount of set pieces that tell a mini story. I am guessing this is procedural but you'll need to differentiate yourself from the rest.
Adrian Gray
>"OP here, we will add those at a later date once we get funding :^)
Liam Lopez
everyone hates the part where you bang a tool at rocks/trees/dirt
put emphasis on what your game offers over rust/wurm/minecraft
Ian Stewart
OP here. Can everyone just chill:). It was a simple question, many of you had fair points. Others hope your pressure levels stabilized.
And btw. Told you to skip frames, long video was meant to be skipped and not be skipped and parts you find interesting.
Henry Brown
Could be fun, Are there placeable lights or something for in houses? If the games about crafting, how engaging is that crafting? what about gathering resources for the crafting? Thoose drops from the beginning didn't seem to have everything from their loot table included, unless its a rare drop might be good to include all the mob drops from a single mob(every deer is made of the same stuff right?)
I just kinda skimmed through your video, Ultimately at least for me price point on indies is really important.
If you ever get on steam send me a curator connect copy ;3
Lincoln Allen
honestly the only thing that stands out is the helicopter and the electricity wiring
Isaac Rivera
Another thing is release with multiplayer included. Games like this that include multiplayer increase the value significantly. Otherwise most people will just pir8 your game.
Jonathan Ward
You can place lights inside a house. We have an intricate electricity system that ranges from powering turrets, player character, simple AND/OR/NOR gates. We'll go by the principle of everything is gatherable(except floor dirt), otherwise there is an receipe system which guides you through crafting.
Every deer is made of the same stuff, but loot drop depends of the biome you are in.
Caleb Gomez
Thought that goes without saying. Yes game will be multiplayer. There is no other way to go these days...
Wyatt Lopez
I don't know OP, I wouldn't listen to Sup Forums
Sup Forums thought PUBG wouldn't be a success and I thought it was just another shitty DayZ clone
Your game could be a success, it could be a flop. I don't know.
Jaxon White
I only watched a little bit because 30 mins is too much time for me right now. I skipped around to try to see a variety of things.
Thoughts:
I think the genre is oversaturated. You can still turn a profit, but I'd be wary of this.
The NPCs are really lame. Why are they human? Why not make them into robots?
Lack of music. I assume this is because it's in development.
You have these cool islands, but all of the plants and animals are normal. It'd be nice to see some original animal and plant designs.
Give more of an incentive to build things. There are a lot of games with Minecraft building. Because of this simple creativity won't draw people in. You need to reward the player for building. Think about Fallout 4 settlements. It was far inferior to other building games, but people found it interesting because of the NPC settlers.
Tyler Morales
Thanks dude!
Nathaniel White
Regardless of MP, your game doesn't look like it brings anything interesting to the table and the controls look clunky and slow. Obviously this is early footage though, you just wouldn't get me to buy it unless it had something like a horror element to it or a large sense of discovery. Obviously that's me imposing my personal taste though.
I've played a lot of Rust, Terraria, Starbound, Minecraft, DayZ, Subnautica, etc.
Austin Sanchez
NPCs are still being developed and some have been added since this demo build. But I agree lack of variety is a bummer for the player. Music was turned down, so viewers could hear devs play. Thats a fair arguments with the Fallout 4 settlements, will try to improve that.
Appreciate it, you had constructive arguments and not a hinge of toxicity in you. Thanks!
Jack Fisher
Change the UI a bit. It's like I'm watching a TF2 mod
Joshua Russell
pubg is another shitty dayz clone Sup Forums just underestimated people would pay for such a small upgrade
Eli Evans
if the DayZ developers hadn't dropped the project 2 years ago PUBG probably wouldn't exist
Mason Bailey
The Forest seems to be dominating this cesspool genre
Ryder Wright
I see, we are trying to move it more in the survival Grow Home way. So its mesmerizing and enjoyable just to walk around and do simple things. But yea, I know, lots of models will be completely reworked, with implementation of water (which works in last tests) and few other visual candies. But as fan of same genre as you, I see where are you coming from.
Josiah Turner
PUBG is a popular Arma mod (just like Dayz) made into a "full" game. That is instead of having to mod another game, it has a standalone launcher that's easy to install and start playing. I am pretty sure that's why it has such a large playerbase.
Isaiah Evans
But you can't argue, PUBG is highly playable as much as you hate it. Just like worms or some other age old game
Ryan Bennett
I'd say subnautica is
Benjamin Lopez
PUBG is actually an Unreal 4 game though, it no longer uses the ARMA engine.
DayZ died because the developers killed the project, it was extremely popular even as a paid early access game. Remember when they acted like they'd eventually port it to consoles? Hilarious.
Nathan Ward
>early access >survival >open world >indie >low poly
I don't know how you could ever think this was a good idea or use of your time
Mason Ramirez
I actually don't hate it. It serves its purpose for me. I don't even try to win. I just watch Netflix, get drunk, and play it.
Oh, I guess one thing is don't release an early access version unless it's a free alpha/beta. As tempting as early access may be, it's a good way to diminish interest in your game over time. Also don't make it readily available to everyone until it's in open beta or in a released state. Hell, other than threads like these, don't announce it until it's closer to finish. You don't want to be Phil Fish'd.
It's based off of ARMA though and you can tell. That's why people compare it to DayZ still.
Justin Bailey
Why not? There is a lot to be achieved in those spaces.
John White
>Oh,and its a low poly FPS survival game... T R A S H
Isaiah Hill
Because these are all things that are mass produced and typically are indicative of poor quality/unfinished cash grabs. You're right that you can still do better than the rest though and I hope you do.
Bentley Taylor
Gee so original
Anthony Russell
dont' listen to this user. Go full cubeworld, hype up your game as best as humanly possible, make mad dosh and then scram
Jeremiah Lee
I like the concept and I could see myself playing it with friends, but what's there to do? Is there a storyline or a goal? Is the focus on exploration? What obstacles are there to your survival?
Adrian Cooper
Just remember that the bandwagon has fucking ledt thr building. Some of the others have already said it in some form or another, but I figure the more you hear it The more confident you can be that it should be. Your game isn't likely to play in a way that is so superior to other games of a similar style. Give it depth. I am sure you believe in the gameplay you've designed, so create a fantastic story that gives players a reason to discover that for themselves. Look at a game like Super Metroid or Demon's Souls for inspiration on how to create a wondrous story and atmosphere without tripping the gameplay up for that player. I don't know how much you could really do in just a few months, but if your writers are good, it'll hook people and people will talk about it. Good luck. Making anything creative from scratch is a bold and inspiring thing. You should be proud of it as long as you have created what you believe is a true experience. Whatever people say or however it performs.
Matthew Reed
Criticisms of products tend to be similar user when people are all criticizing the same product.
Parker Reed
If you gave the NPCs distinct personalities like in Stardew Valley or Terraria, even if all their dialogue is just text-based, it could make the game more interesting. From what I saw in the video, the game doesn't really do much to distinguish itself from other games in the genre.
Bentley White
There is only one way to release a game and that is a proper way, we aren't trying to exit scam with the game. It's our brain child, heck if we were money hungry we would drop the game and went full into crypto, but why leave something you love...
Jack Garcia
>Oh,and its a low poly FPS survival game...
Kevin White
There is a story behind it, but we aren't completely satisfied with it, so i won't spoil it yet. Obstacles will came in variety of ways. Different hooks in Points of Interest, natural dizasters which will create a hazardous environment, and unfriendly environment such as in winter biome and water biome...
Daniel Rodriguez
Don't give in to SJWs. Don't listen to shitty game "journalists". Give your game a story, something to work towards. NPCs with distinct personalities. Gameplay and good writing should be first. Everything else second. People play games for the fucking game. Look at stuff like Gone Home, not even a game but praised by the ""journalists"" because they don't even like video games - they just want something pretentious to pretend to like to reinforce how superior they are.
Don't be like that. Focus on gameplay and writing, without tripping up either. Unique NPCs. Solid story. Depth to the system and mechanics. And above all, make it something you are proud of and that you believe is good.
Jaxon Martinez
Be honest, in your own opinion, is it fun to play? And if you didn't know anything about it and saw it on Steam, would it convince you to buy it? Is it anything new or fresh?
Joseph Reed
Thanks dude, will listen to every word that you said!
Isaiah Cox
It's hard to say, cuz I'm mentally invested in the game, but as I said before, it won't be released until we as a team aren't truly fully satisfied with the product. There are still few weapons that are rare Ore powered, so that could increase fun levels
Samuel Russell
>OP here. Can everyone just chill:). It was a simple question, many of you had fair points.
Maybe not post your game on Sup Forums out of all places. Reddit would probably be a better place.
Besides, it looks like uninspired survival crafting garbage. Other than the low-poly look (which I like btw) it looks pretty much shit. Just fuck off already.
Luis Long
As fugli as Sup Forums is, it has some of the most knowledgeable people using it. So when you rise above all the shitcomments, you find some great advices, which are like rules written in stone.
Grayson Gray
>early access survival garbage #123124 only low poly Fuck right off with this shit
Andrew Mitchell
Thanks dude!
Leo Diaz
Your game will be refunded with a negative review.
Get fucked.
Angel Collins
Glad you at least have some faith in us. You know if you go on reddit all you'll get is brown-nosing and unanimous agreement with whatever you say regardless of quality, and anybody with actual criticism will be downvoted into oblivion or banned outright. That's why reddit is so bad and why we fucking hate it.
Matthew Gray
Looks generic, every other survival game have the same type of mechanic, yours just have floating islands. Just add something new, like city management, politics, factions, complex economics, NPCs having their own agenda, objectives and purposes, air combat, weird environments. Also giant monsters and dinosaurs, these are really important. Add some colors and textures too, that palette will start to look like shit after 10h of game.
Isaac Hernandez
Maybe, maybe not, we'll see:)
You won't trigger me dude, nice try
Jose Walker
>any negative comment is toxic bullying and ignored >any positive comment is constructive and appreciated Enjoy bankrupcy lads, you jumped on the bandwagon just as it's slowing down. I guess that's what you get for being a low effort, low talent, uncreative guy. If you have the ability to make a game you should have joined with any of billions of idea guys on Sup Forums and made something actually good
Levi Martinez
#1 visual style is abysmal. I don't want to play something that looks like this, and neither does almost anyone else. It looks low effort and youre going for an aesthetic that just isnt pleasing. Without textures people will be tired of looking at this instantly and will refund it inside their 2 hour period.
#2 I skipped through the video and saw mostly not gameplay. This is basically why most games suck right now
Focus on the player starting up the game and PLAYING. Not looking at text, not looking at inventory, not looting things. Change the game design so that the VIDEO GAME is based on PLAYING.
Jack Campbell
this guy said exactly what i was thinking Basically what you have shown, has no reason to exist. Why would I play this instead of The Forest or anything else like that?
Make a game based on gameplay or dont make a game at all. We don't need 500th of the same thing but with worse and cheap graphics
Austin Scott
I can't exactly watch the video right now, but judging by other replies it's just a survival game. To make it more engaging add some RPG elements, maybe an end goal, and ""quests"" to make npcs more livable, world worth researching and all thst. You can also make interactions and quests obscure, you know, dark souls style without any journals, logs and other stuff
Nathaniel Thomas
Yep, we were thinking about implementing an market bank place, where there is place for people to hang around WoW style, thanks for reassurance that we should definitely do that.
What exactly bothers you about colors? Too off colors or just not in the right combination?
Austin Taylor
Oversaturated market, abandon ship or radically change It looks about as promising as financial investment in 1929
Dylan Thompson
1.Interesting, we were thinking if we should add texture or not. I guess people have spoken.
2. This was a demo build so yea it won't start like that at all, this begining takes to long before you start doing anything. Its more like a showcase of art and parts of a gameplay, soo thanks, but I start looks boring
Brody Collins
From the replies in the thread its obvious they dont want to face reality
Nobody is going to be interested in this. It has no reason to exist.
Dude but tell me which genre isn't oversaturated? Game market cap is constantly growing, everything was thought of in one game or another.
Colton Gray
We are facing reality, and changing things majority hates, and adding things people want. But not everyone has the same taste, and some people will hate something regardless improvements, and vice versa...
Connor Watson
>Dude but tell me which genre isn't oversaturated?
Games which are "kimochi ii" - they naturally feel good to play. The controls feel good in your hands, the character is responsive and reacts instantly, causing changes in the world and other characters. Here is an example.
Look at your own gameplay. Tell me what looks fun about it. Where is the fun?
Collecting, crafting - can do in 100 other games that are bigger budget and better than your game Combat - lets be honest with ourselves, based on what you have shown, your combat isnt going to be anything to write home about
Have you lost the idea about what a video game is? That natural concept of controls feeling good in your hands? Did you grow up on things that didn't have that, such as pokemon?
I know this is terribly harsh but you asked for opinions and I am telling you to abandon development on this game today and change it to something else.
Gavin Diaz
good development is not based on doing what the majority wants, good development is based on following the vision of a strong leader who understands fun.
Isaiah Wood
Wow and I thought you were legit. Your beloved Cross code looks like a bad written Android game, so I totally disagree with you, but hey, diversity is fun, right.
Connor Bell
>abandon development on this game today and change it to something else. this, OP. especially since your hook is which even sounds boring
Luis Ortiz
Yeah the market as a whole is oversaturated- But in order to keep OP from diluting my point, I stuck to the genre of the game at hand
Adam Morgan
It sound deep and it is a bit true, but not fully. Majority acts like a PID controller that stabilizes the ship and gets it on course again...
Aaron Jenkins
Guys it was fun. Thanks for listening and all the suggestions.
Hope, we do this again in a few months.
Thank god we have Sup Forums in this day and age
Hudson Mitchell
Is your plan to sell this game for money?
Henry Edwards
I want to add something very important I think OP is missing out on since nobody has noticed it
OP does not seem like he hangs around on Sup Forums but just came to ask our opinion
OP, for the last 2+ years, people on Sup Forums have been lamenting the plethora of early access, open world survival games out there. It is a genre that is absolutely overflowing, there are too many games and not enough people to play the ones that exist. Subnautica 1.0 is supposed to come out this week and to me Subnautica is the most compelling game in this genre. Subnautica has been on sale on steam for 12.99
Can you compete with Subnautica for 12.99? When you play Subnautica, do you feel like your game has a chance to be as engaging? Subnautica's world is not randomly generated, it was hand built over thousands of iterations! Can you do that to make your game interesting?
We are tired of these games. The industry is tired of these games. They exist because they are easy to make-- you put the player down and tell them to make their own story. By comparison, I challenge you to make a single level for the original Quake game, that is good quality. You will quickly realize that it will take you months to do, to make one level. And that's why your game is open world survival, because it's easy to do
IT'S BORING. WE DON'T WANT ANY MORE.
Thank you for reading
Robert Campbell
NO NO DUDE STOP NO
Robert Gutierrez
This, fuck indie devs and their condescending, cunty personalities. This dumb motherfucker thought it was a good idea to make a low poly survival game in 2018, I don't think he will take any of our ideas (good or bad) because he probably has his head shoved too far up his own ass.
Carson Thompson
I think adding a sassy gay Hitler robot sidekick is a sure way to get those views and Youtuber coverage your game needs to ensure those Steam sales.
Leo Gutierrez
>to enjoy just to wander around so does fucking minecraft you trog
Austin Cook
looks alright but the gameplay is lack luster there are tons of games out there who does the same thing you do but with more content
the game looks like its doesn't bring anything new to the table
Luis Baker
>Dude but tell me which genre isn't oversaturated >lol dude tell me something billion dollar gaming industries can barely figure out how about you try being unique instead of making something that looks like it was made with free unity assets.
