Reach had a mission focused on protecting shuttles full of people. Every time the Covenant invaded the UNSC would do this to evacuate civilians to Earth but the Covenant being sacks of shit targeted these shuttles full of innocent people who probably never held a gun in their life.

The Halo universe shouldn't have reached the point it was at as of Halo 4 for another 20-30 years in universe at least.

This is made even more a shame since the actual novels themselves have all been consistently great ever since the kilo 5 triology ended, but the overall state of the universe and that context they exist in has already gone way past the point of suspension of disbelief thanks to them rushing through shit in the big picture even if any indivual novel is still good
