It's not even innovative in that. Cuphead's greatness comes purely from the context of its development and the ridiculous amount of effort it took to animate.

Not coming to assault Cuphead either, I think it deserves heaps of praise for being a hell of a fun game and a man's dream project come true, but it's not breaking new ground so much as it is someone's fun idea of pumping Contra and Mega Man bosses with steroids and giving it a 1930's cartoon flair.
