Shin Megami Tensei Thread

This is the most fun I've had in ages

truly the dark souls of the persona games

Play mainline Persona faggot

Is it really though?

The answer is yes.

I'm enjoying it, even if I feel stupid about how I'm bruteforcing the game
I have a stock full of level 80s and 90s and I haven't even beaten the game

>smtfags
play mainline

glad you're enjoying it, it introduced me into the franchise in general, it's just been an endless spiral of various SMT games from there.

...

oh fuck i forgot a remake for this is coming out cant wait to try it

It's not like the game is ever challenging in any way.

>Persona
>Mainline

Fags.

you and me both my dude

As much as I harbour a burning hatred for the 3DS they did a pretty good job with this, especially the combat pace. I hold grave fears for V however, since it will probably look like a B grade PS3 game.

>like a B grade PS3 game.
So like persona 5.

>playing games where you need a guide to get the real ending

>Real ending
You never played smt games did you?

IV: A follows neutral, so that's the real ending

At least they masked that with an art style. Hard to do with mainline.

Its not, they merely expanded upon the neutral route but thats it, the game has multiple universes so every ending can be canon to the player.

>player gets law/chaos ending
>starts IV: A
>has no idea what's going on
hmmmmm

How is the art preserved? Like, is a Switch port possible without redrawing all the sprites? I could totally go for a HD bundle of this as Apocalypse if it means I can comprehend what some of the sprites are supposed to be

>he didnt get neutral on his own

Dont make me repeat myself again senpai.

>they merely expanded upon the neutral route
because it's the true route

>smt
>canon endings
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Try strange journey at some point user, definitely one of the more unique games in MegaTen

>ending that the game's direct sequel follows is somehow not the canon ending

I'm waiting for the 3ds remake

Waiting for the remake is worth it, none the endings don't suck for once and the new bosses are cool.

You mean the placeholder sprites for characters in a distance or unimportant NPCs? What's so hard to look at? Doubt there'll ever be ports, but maybe the 3DS games will eventually be part of the VC library like the DS'

>atlus loves sticking dubs and removing subs into their games and ruining them
>sj remake is the one game where a dub would make sense
>they keep it subbed

At least the cast is good.

I suspected that would happen. Makes sense, being a remake it's in an awkward position. Looking foward to it tho, wonder what all the demons sound like in nipponese

Enjoy it while it lasts, the difficulty only goes downhill after Naraku.

Eh, depends

I never managed to beat him, I'm shit at it desu

iirc he wasnt an optional boss. I did it but I dont even know how I pulled it off

I had to lower the difficulty to be honest

>Minotaur
>Becomes an OP smirkster if you happen to get OY as partner

>King Frost
>Smirks your ass regardless of anything

JUST

I dont mind. But i was wondering why, was Kaneko too busy to rework on the game or something?

I got the shittiest ending but I can't be assed to play the entire game again.

Sup Forums will whine and bitch about anything

>2013
>never heard of SMT before, not even persona
>thought it would just be some midieval setting rpg
>it's hard as balls
>somehow beat both Minotaur and Medusa blind
>suddenly walk across a gun, I'm surprised and start to become a lot more suspicious
>reach land of the unclean ones
>it's fucking post-apocalyptic tokyo
>mind = blown
>with soundtrack reminicent of the 80s

I'm sure smt oldfags could've seen this coming but this was amazing for a newcomer like me back in the day.
I love SMTIV even if it's a broken mess gameplay-wise.

...

Kaneko is done with SMT it seems, he drew art for the series for over 20 years. Now he kinda just watches over SMT while still working at Atlus acting as a sort of advisor, he does still do art for other stuff though. What I'm pissed about is Doi bot doing it, they only had him do Alex and the new demons.
The art for a "remake" is worse then the original, yeah I'm issed about it.

The art got a bit more anime-ish, i don't really mind that.
BUT DAMN THEY SURE FUCKED GORE UP SOMETHING FIERCE.

as someone who had to do it recently, the answer was null mind, big healthbars, salvation and doping.

If you have lots of resistances vs the shit he does, he starts using Megidolaon and other things to bypass them.

Let him get a few press turns and smirks and hammer him.

Go play SMT1 and then play SMT2.

It's not worse it just changed the style. Don't be such a baby.

i'm the exact same story my friend, found the game on the e-store while looking for something to play on my commutes, was grabbed by the everything and got my mind blown when i reached Tokyo, it introduced me into everything SMT related.

Doi didn't do the crew portraits retard.

Different style but there's a lot more and everyone gets a sprite this time. The remake is literally an improvement in all ways.

That's exactly what user said

How is strange journey? The only SMT I've played was 4. Thinking about downloading the strange journey remake on the 3ds.

I don't really mind that they changed the art a bit.

>What I'm pissed about is Doi not doing it, they only had him do Alex and the new demons.
Did you even read my post retard?
Eh, it's nice but all the portraits looking ametuer as fuck is dissapointing.

>ametuer as fuck
They look fairly nice, super standard, but nice in general, especially Chen, who is a cutie now instead of some blurry body.

Why do you bother? It's obvious he doesn't care that it's not actually amateur in any way. He is just pissed it's not the same style and is throwing a blind fit.

You'll have to wait, the localized remake hasn't come out yet

SJ is a first person dungeon crawler unlike IV so there's that. Dungeons in this game are much more complex often with long passage ways, traps, and in some cases puzzles. Combat is quite different as the press turn system is replaced by a system called "demon co-op". In this system hitting a eny weakness will have everyone then attack the demon but ONLY if they are the same alignment as the attacker. For example, if a law demon hits a enemy weakness only law aligned demons (or your character if law aligned) will then do a second attack. The game has a different atmosphere too, more sci fi inspired in tone.

Personally my favorite SMT and video game ever made but maybe play Nocturne and/or IV:A before going into it for just a bit more SMT experience as it has some difficulty spikes.
It's not about it not being Kaneko, I would have liked if Doi did it since he can actually draw, the new art just looks ametuer as fuck. Seriously, had Doi done all of the new art I would have no gripes.

>You'll have to wait
Hacked 3ds' are not region locked and moon is not an issue. I was just curious what do you guys think about it, the remake specific.

Are there any other complaints other than the art changed? I wouldn't be able to identify bad shit since I only played one SMT.

the original is sitting in my NDS flashcart for a year now...
should I play it or wait for DEEP?

Play it, then play the remake when it comes out and shitpost about it with the rest of us.

It is arguablyba bit more casualized but I guess that isn't a huge deal as you could ignore that shit or even just go in not caring. Probably one of the biggest differences is you can now save anywhere which kind of breaks tension a bit. Honestly if moon isn't a problem go for it.
Up to you. I already own SJ but plan to get this version anyway for the new content. If anything you can play one route in the original and then another route in redux.

if you bring alice the fight becomes a pushover since he'll lose press turns from trying to status ailment spam and you can just remove what did get applied with salvation

Oh, so it's kinda like TMS' system but more complex? Looking forward to it, nice to see alignments have an actual role in the game other than route-selection

Some people are pretty mixed on it but personally I really like it. It makes alignment matter in gameplay and team crafting requires a bit more thought. You don't have to always have a super optimal team where everyone is the same alignment but having three members of the same one or two and two of differing alignmemts does help.

>play Nocturne
I would if that had a remake. I'm not really a huge fan of playing outdated games. This game is about to be 15 years old.

Only reason I'll try SJ is because of the remake. If the remake was ass then I'd probably just skip it. Good to know it's not.

>not playing video games because of how old they are
I genuinely think you don't belong here. Nocturne is better then probably anything to come out this year. Age is meaningless in most cases, games good 30 years ago are more then likely still good today.

SMTIV is basically a glorified mobile game.

>I'm not really a huge fan of playing outdated games.
>outdated
that's faggotery to begin with...
and on top of that, Nocturne is a fucking JRPG, a genre that barely evolved since the 90s

402266797
(You) don't deserve it.

Not if they give me eye cancer and just constantly remind me that I'm playing a game that is almost from the last century.

>SMTIV is basically a glorified mobile game.
what did he mean by this?

I'm sorry but I genuinely have to believe you're an underage user, no legal poster could be this ignorant about video games.
He meants he wanted (You)s, don't give him any.

@402266797
getting no (You)s from me

You're still giving him attention, you morons.

He may not be getting those sweet (you)s but he still knows he's gotten under your skin, and that's what he wants.

I'm 24. I doubt any western kid would know JP unless they are half breed or something.

I just don't like playing games that look like shit.

SMT IV was just okay.

That being said, having a Neutral Hero(ine) is sacrilege.

Not the redesigns, no

It's because weeaboo pieces of shit like whining about a game being in their native language rather than gookspeak they don't understand.

Atlus finally listens to them and now people with common sense can get fucked.

>It's not worse it just changed the style.

>knows moon
>instead of using it to play cool old Japanese games that are untranslated he instead only plays new shit
If you are that much of a graphicsfag I don't think you belong here. Maybe just go download clash of clans or LoL or whatever else is suitable for you.

Atlus USA are treating their last 3DS games like garbage due to the Switch's increasing popularity. and Atlus JP's focus on SMT5. PQ2 will suffer a similar fate, unless they announce a last minute Switch version.

The Catherine remaster isn't getting a dub either. I think they just don't want to be assed to pick again the same actors to redo the game + new parts, assuming all the actors would be back

>Neutral Hero(ine) is sacrilege.
does she even count in the end?
Did nothing, decided nothing, couldn't even figure out how to make neutral work without the MC dragging her along in his shadow.

It doesn't need to be top notch, it just needs to not be terrible.

It's acceptable when it's 2d so for that matter SJ would not be so bad. When it's old 3d though that's just unplayable. 3d from the 90s and 2000s was ass and you know it.

With the case of DSJ it's not even that, they fucked up and didn't plan ahead for the 25th anniversary. When it finally came to 2017 they had nothing to release for the 25th annoversary and had to quickly put together something. SJ was ideal since it was still new enough where changes wouldn't have to be major but old enough to be last gen.

Whatever baby, you're going to miss out on so many genuinely phenomenal game because of your own ignorance.

>That being said, having a Neutral Hero(ine) is sacrilege
Is this ignorance the power of nocturne only babies?

>red
I don't remember this

nocturne isn't even that bad graphics wise if you emulate, assuming you're not using a toaster

>The Catherine remaster isn't getting a dub either.
Wait, really?

That is her outfit post nukes. She dies when the nukes drops but is reincarnated.

Doesn't she die before you even make an alignment choice?

Anyway, I thought she stood by your side regardless of your alignment choices, but it's been over ten years since I've played SMT.

I looked up and apparently there are no details about it. I guess i was just remembering rumours

Just look at the trailer it shows the artstyle

>behold my demons

Debatable.

When you first meet her she is neutral and opposes both the Japanese government and American army. Just before the nukes drop she uses her powers to teleport you to a seoerate dimension and she ends up dying in the blast. Eventually, because she is actually Eve and you are Adam, she reincarnates. She has no prior memory except that she knew you, because of this she decides to follow you no matter what.

In a way she is neutral as that was what she came to be on her own her terms in her previous life but she will also follow you no matter what once reincarnated and without any memory.

>The Catherine remaster isn't getting a dub either
Time to kill myself then
