Here's the deal: Earthbound as a series was never good. The game was an unknown very niche thing for the longest time. Even pre late 2000's it was this thing you could feel special for playing/liking/owning. You would bring it up to people and they'd usually give the answer of what is that? That allowed you to feel good for telling them about this rare gem.
However, This wasn't meant to last. Spergs on a certain forum simply let a good thing lie and be a 'cult' hit they had to push it out into the open.
The sequel has a sorta same ideal. Aside from suffering from the series's problems with its fanbase. It was in development trouble for a long time. This meant that when it came out it was going to be liked no matter how inferior or bad it was. Earthbound lost its quality years ago around the time a certain webcomic came out which also carried (even plagarizing) some of the game's elements and art. However, Mother 3 was inferior to even a mediocre game for the time. It wasn't a good game. People however tricked themselves into believing it was a good game due to them being able to PLAY it "Hey a new MOTHER game yay!" Despite all of its over bearing flaws.
Around the years Mother 3 came out and EB was just in the stages of losing its hipster quality, A webcomic came out that sorta fed off of EBs unknowness and straight out ripping elements and even sprites from the game. The webcomic even had a meme where people would want to TELL you about it. This is obviously a deep rooted element of the game and most of a certain part of its fanbase are avid readers of the webcomic.
That fanbase's forums/site nowadays are headed by SJWs, Furries and Bronies. It is Tumblr with an Earthbound skin.
That was the rise and fall of this mediocre to start with series.

Nobody would say that. The game talks up simple life in a small community as opposed to abandoning that life for life in a big city. This is commentary on Japan more than anything else because every small city and town in Japan has suffered since the end of WWII with many losing more than half their population in the drive towards urbanization. People are abandoning nature and living in actual communities in favor of money and careers in big cities.
At the same time though, the game is about how Porky is a man out of place as he comes back to the world in a different era and tries to force the way of life on this new age and how he really shouldn't, how he missed the point of everything good about the old society he lived in. Porky didn't bring things like friendship and community and family in the way it existed in Mother 2, he brought only the bad things that are emblematic of his greedy personality. This always came off to me as commentary about post war Japanese society. There's always been reactionaries who want to return to Japan's imperial past. I think Itoi is trying to point out that all they want to bring back are the negative aspects of pre-war society; in Porky's case this is greed and abandonment of nature and in the imperial reactionary case its autocracy and militarization without actually bring good things like smaller communities where people actually know each other and live closer to nature. Their society had to redesign itself after a great societal calamity and the old way can't just simply come back much like in the game.
This doesn't even address how the system of life in the game made sense since their society was essentially down to like 20 people, making a currency system and modern life pretty much pointless. The game never addresses where Porky recruited his army from and I think this is left intentionally vague, New Pork City is hollow and fake all over; it looks grand and populated but is just a shell.
