not enough gameplay for games
not as easy to read as literature

vis novels are cyoa-picturebooks.
however, Danganrnopa and Ace Attorney series have some gameplay in them so they're both at once.

it's a shame really
I would love have things like DDLC as a book or manga or anime instead

>vis novels are cyoa-picturebooks.
Isn't that a game? Isn't the only thing that defines a game player agency, or being able to make a decision with an outcome in the game?

They're games.
Doesn't matter what autists think

>Offers some sort of challenge
>Has a fail state
If both apply, its a game.

some define videogames as media that, amongst other things, has gameplay, aka interaction with the game's systems, so it all boils down to what you define as "game". i personally think is true too.

Does that mean things like Steins;Gate aren't games because it doesn't have dead ends?

Not even this.
They just need to be interactive

Some of them are games like Dangitronpaul and Ace Attorney but shit like Steins:Gate arent vidya

Visual Novels aren't games. I don't care about the official definition.
Imagine someone saying he's an avid videogame fan and all he does is read visual novels.
Sorry sweetie but the only appeal is the story though I understand why a choice would make you feel like you have an impact.

That's also the reason why I hesitate to call hybrids like Danganronpa or Ace Attorney games since no one plays them for the gameplay.
Solving cases is fun but that's not part of the gameplay. I love them both but I heavily warn people who try to get into them

Anything is a "game" just like anything is a "sport" or "art" when the abstract definition is applied.

>Muh opinion means they aren't games
They're games because they fit all the requirements. Personal opinion means nothing.

People who play VN's have low IQ, they don't want to read a plain book without images and sound to guide them

>yfw VN brainlets can't even understand their own "games"

>they fit all the requirements
but not all of them do?!?!

Neither, they are basically subbed animes.

>Personal opinion means nothing.
It's almost as if we have the threads regularly to see what the personal definition for everyone else is.
Otherwise someone would just need to post the official definition and we're done.

Name any VN that doesn't fit this definition

Doki Doki, the only requirements it fits is picture books

It could literally never existed and fundamentally not work as a game. ddlc justifies itself to be a video game

People who ask
>is x a game
Are fucking stupid, real question is
>why is x a game

But of course nobody cares about that so this hobby will keep going down the shitter. Doesn't help that video game people have the lowest possible standard for what is praiseworthy writing so well never get anything truly good which wouldn't be so bad if we had good game play but here we are

picture books for adults

>Interaction
Nope it's a game

>trusting wikipedia, the free misinformationpedia
on the other hand, basically anything can be called a videogame under that definition. even watching digital paint dry.
DDLC involves interaction with the user interface, and also uses some interactivity bits that are impossible to recreate within any other medium, be it books or animes. it's a game, as much as it pains me to admit it.

>People don't ask dumb question on Sup Forums

>Interaction
Yeah so Choose Your Own Adventure books?

i want kirigiri to jerk me off with her baconhands!

>>People who ask
>>is x a game
>Are fucking stupid, real question is
>>why is x a game
fuck off methodist pleb
particularism master race

>Muh wikipedia is wrong because my old college professor said so meme
That's the basic definition for the word Video Game retard.

I'm still salty pic-related didn't happen.

>Choose Your Own Adventure books
Yes they are if they have the video part idiot

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE TRUE MEANING OF WORDS
ROT IN SEMANTIC HELL, HEATHEN

>reading my post as ">Muh wikipedia is wrong because my old college professor said so"
read the other, non-ironic half of my reply to you.

>Dude words are subjective lmao
Why are you even arguing then?

i need to get around to watching the dr3 anime but i've heard such bad things about it that i dont know if i should

>GREENTEXT PARAPHASING RIDICULE INSTEAD OF ARGUMENT
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE TRUE MEANING OF WORDS

>Why are you even arguing then?
I'M UPSET WITH YOU

I'm watching it just so I'm up to date and for lore purposes. I know most of this shit won't come up in V3 but I still don't want to miss references.

The anime is basically just a continuation of Ultra Despair Girls though (explaining what they did after Monaca failed to start the Towa Group vs Future-Foundation war.

>It doesn't fit my personal description of a game so it isn't
That's literally your only argument

so what did the rest of them take from Junko's body?

im at the last part of v3 and so far they haven't made any kind of reference to DR3, they make reference to the first 2 but most of them are small

>all that shit you pulled out of your ass
please look back at , where i clearly stated that, quote
>it all boils down to how YOU personally define "game"
so yes, to me, not all visual novels are games. your case may be different, but i'm not here to tell you that you're wrong. still, you're a pleb for getting all defensive when your opinion is challenged, and so i laugh in your general direction.

That's not surprising, the devs said they made the anime specifically to round off all the old plot threads so they could start fresh with games going onward.

I just finished DR1 and just got the first case for DR2. Is Ultra Despair Girls worth playing before V3 or can I just watch the cutscenes? Playing a shooter from these guys sounds awful but i'm willing to give it a shot.

Not all of them took parts, I don't think. Fuyuhiko took her eye and had it added in place of one of his own, one of them ripped out her womb (hoping to birth a second Junko) and Komaeda took her arm and crudely attached it to himself (can only move a couple fingers and not much else).

The rest are left unstated.

i hate it how ignorant retards call VNs games just because they're sold on steam
and all the trash english VNs coming out have retarded mini-games in them because they think they're supposed to be 'games'
it's like people are too stupid to accept there can be computer entertainment media that isnt a video game

...

Visual novels are visual novels.

Maybe I'm biased since I just finished getting the Platinum in UDG but I think it's worth playing. There are only one or two scenes where the dialogue just goes on way too long, but it moves at a pretty decent pace otherwise and the gameplay is "good enough" to merit a playthrough. Lasts about 25 hours across 5 chapters. Heavy references to DR1 and 2, sets up much of the framework for the anime,.

tl;dr yes it's worth playing and yes it ties heavily into the anime preceding V3. V3 itself doesn't linger much on any of the extended lore however.

is a gray area imo. you bet your ass you won't get accepted on . but the story has such a focus that gameplay has barely any focus. Some games like Dangaronpa and AA kinda fix that but that's just about it. nonetheless it should be accepted on Sup Forums

Also, fuck you /vn/, bunch of shiteater weeaboos
