Anybody else feel like this game is being overlooked for GOTY consideration because it was on a handheld? It was definatly Nintendo's best of the year.

It was a good game, not amazing by any standart, so it didn't really have a shot at GOTY

No because game of the year was already a handheld game.

It was a true return to form for Metroid, that managed to undue all the ill that Other M had done and experiment with new gameplay elements. It was amazing.

Which one?

Being good in comparison to the worst game of the franchise it not enough to make it amazing. Like I said, it's a good game and I want it to be successful so we can get more 2d metroids, but it just wasn't as good as Super or even ZM

It was a step in the right direction to put Metroid back on the map, it wasn't by any means a masterpiece and is still overshadowed by the likes of Zero Mission and Super
Of course i want them to keep making new 2D Metroids, but if the next is just as good as Samus Returns then i'll be pretty disappointed

No, it's being overlooked for GotY due to its mediocrity.

It got best portable of the year in TGA, so shut the fuck up

It's being overlooked because it has to compete with Odyssey and BOTW. It's indisputably the 3DS GOTY though. Sorry, Ever Oasis. :(

>Being good in comparison to the worst game of the franchise it not enough to make it amazing.

That's not what I said. I said it was so good that it made uup for Other M.

It was berr thean ZM in my opinion, and offered far more challenge and atmosphere.

Cuphead and Automata are both mediocre, and everyone loves them.

>Cuphead and Automata are both beloved

Because Xbox and Playstation owners have nothing else to play. I'm seeing a lot of sperging on Angry Joe's GOTY video about not having Horizon or Automata on the list.

It was a mediocre Metroid game that was blown out of the water by a fan remake.

>It was berr thean ZM in my opinion, and offered far more challenge and atmosphere.
I liked the visuals a lot, the 3D effects in particular are probably one of the best i've seen in the system, what holds back the atmosphere to me is the music though, most of them are far too ambient and doesn't stand at all. I agree that it's challenging but at the cost of constantly having enemies attacking you and i really don't think Metroid is about killing indigens all the time, it's about the level design and how good it feels to traverse through the world. By the end of the day SR is still a remake of Metroid II, a game about killing a bunch of aliens to unlock a new path and keep going down that path, it's a bit too formulatic and linear to my taste, both it and AMR2 tried the best they could with the concept but to me it still holds the game down too much
The main reason i'm excited for a new 2D Metroid made by these guys is so that they can be free from the shackles of Metroid II and make a great map that feels good to explore without having to stop every few steps to kill a bunch of enemies and Metroids, hopefully compose some better musics too

AM2R had a lot of good ideas, but SR was the better game overall.

Ok? Samus Returns is still mediocre.

How is it mediocre?

>true return to form
Not really, it was held down by the design of the original

I'd say it expanded on the original well enough to make it more interesting.

How?

>ruined the original's horror atmosphere
>only one new boss
>shoehorned ridley battle at the end

>far too ambient

No such thing, especially in Metroid. One of the earliest areas you arrived in while playing Super had ambient music

>overlooked for GOTY consideration because it was on a handheld?
No

Is Federation Forces as bad dog shit trash as Sup Forums constantly tries to make it sound like?

I also hope the atmosphere returns in Metroid 5, since Zero Mission, the series hasn't been having the same level of atmosphere that the first four games had. It just felt like Nintendo wanted to make the original Metroid and Metroid II as colorful as possible.

And then not long after we get this youtube.com/watch?v=AsG3sw51yYI

>>ruined the original's horror atmosphere

No it didn't.

>only one new boss

And the other bosses were revamped to the point of offering a new challenge

>shoehorned ridley battle at the end

It linked Metroid to Super Metroid. It made sense.

No, It's a fine game on it's own, it was just not what people wanted at the time.

>ruined the original's atmosphere
ftfy

sure but I still wouldn't call it a return to form

I would. It was held back by the structure of the original, but that's the only problem.

it's a shame that the structure of the world is a major part of metroid then

I felt it was more exploration heavy than the original, and the elevators and warp pads really helped.

I liked how they expanded the environments because of the bigger screen, the original's environments felt too closed in. While the game had a similar problem with not capturing the original game's atmosphere, like Zero Mission there were some areas in the game that felt more atmospheric than the original games.

Spbp

It had some design issues in its own right, though. Handheld or no it's not GotY material, sadly.

>t had some design issues in its own right

Such as?

Seems some people think you're wrong.

They should have released it to a real system.

Did it sell enough for Metroid 5 to be a possibility?

>Did it sell enough for Metroid 5 to be a possibility?
I'm starting to think that people that ask this question are trolling /reddit/ faggots.

I honestly can't find any conclusive information on the sales figures.

>no 2D metroid for 13 years after ZM
>SR sells less than ZM

you tell me

>Nintendo confirmed firm sales
>Sakamoto interested in making a 2D Metroid game for the Switch
>Sakamoto already planned out Metroid 5 and hopes fans know where he plans to go with it
>one of the best selling games on the 3DS on Nintendo's website
I'll let you figure that out.

Zero Mission had nothing to do with why the series was on a 13-year break, blame Iwata for wanting to restructure Nintendo. They were planning a 2D Metroid for the DS but it never made it past the concept stages and Other M was originally going to be a 2D Metroid game.
