granted this is all coming from the older games (sonic 3&K) but imo sonic is way past his prime and this game was good because it was made by fans. there are indie games coming out that I feel simply do sonic better.

For what it's worth, the level design is amazing, the music is off the chain, and the aesthetics pay none-stop tribute to that late 80's/early 90's colour palette. It's like traveling back in time, in the best way possible. Best Sonic game since the originals.
But you don't like them, so just leave it.

Find the shields. Adds an extra hit and also adds invulnerability against elemental attacks according to each shield. All shields block against small enemy bullets. Also, dropping your rings is a punishment for not being careful, but it's not punishing because you can just pick most of them right back up. Finding a blue ring box drops giant rings that give lots of rings back if you pick them up.

Jumping is the combat system in the game. No one complained about mario only having a jump attack. Pick up elemental shields. They add an extra ability while playing as sonic. Fire - charge dash, bubble - bounce/butt bomb, spark - double jump.

This game in particular never fails to telegraph a pitfall or a hazard without first introducing you to the "tells". It's the most fair game in the series when it comes to level design with the least pits and the least cheap deaths.

That said, it already sounds like you're super negative about it so you don't want to give it a fair shot, so i'd say pass on it, because you'll just end up hating it anyway- you've already predisposed yourself to having a bad time.

I don't know about Electric Jester but Freedom Planet is very far away from being designed around momentum. If you try to compare Freedom Planet to the original Sonic games then it is out right bad due to its physics so it is best to not even compare them to Sonic.

More based around zipping through the level since you don't take contact damage from enemies. I mostly just ran past the regular enemies during levels since I didn't see a need to bother interacting with them. The combat mostly comes in during the boss fights which are fleshed out. Freedom Planet has a charge meter like Sparkster in which you can do a fast boost attack which depletes your meter allowing you to zip around while you are depleting your meter.

If it appeals to you then sure. Personally I went in expecting a Sonic like experience and was fairly disappointed. It is a solid game.

You can dictate your pace in Freedom Planet because most of the fast elements are controlled by character abilities. While no where near as momentum heavy as Sonic, almost all three characters have movement tools that help. The levels are more long and linear than your standard Sonic fare but the game shines with boss battles and the combat in general. Don't play with story mode on unless you gain sustenance from cringe.
