Why are there so many old ports/remasters/collections in recent years?

Why are there so many old ports/remasters/collections in recent years?

Money

Old games were genuinely better.

Because you could release this game on a fucking gameboy and I'd buy it.

I fucking LOVE Re4

Because they don't have to pay for new concept art or assets that already exist.

Playstation.

Because
1. Cheaper than creating a new game from start
2. Those are well-liked games so it's a sure bet
3. Those games are so loved that people will always jump at the chance of playing them again.

Money, laziness, corruption, no creativity, over saturation, boring ideas, etc

The same reason that games like Skyrim keep getting re-released over and over.
Mindless drones and newfags just eat that shit up in droves and they know they can make a ton of money because of the name alone.
Why invest money and resources on making a redesigned sequel or original IP when you can just re-release the same thing that's made you millions of $$$ several times over? It's the perfect business model.

new SP games are risky to make due to piracy so they just rerelease old shit and center their new games on mtx and multiplayer

PS5 comes out and it isn't backwards compatible with PS4. How mad will you be?

fundraising and new audiences, i imagine.

its so bizzare looking at shit like this. its like rereleasing atari games on PS2

companies have done the cost/return analysis on making a new game that people will hate vs. re-releasing an old game that people already love and decided new things aren't worth it

why cant they just make remakes?

I don't get why people are so against modern ports. Is movies being released on VHS, DVD, Blu Ray, and 4K bad too?

It's kinda sad when I get more excited to HD releases like Okami or RE4 than new games.

Because the only other version of RE4 I own is on the PS2 and I'd like to play it without it looking like complete ass on my HD tv

They do.
And they're gonna keep doing it till the end of time.
It's so bizarre seeing this shit still being re-re-rereleased like clockwork I still remember playing them on PS1.

yeah. but not all games seemed exactly the same back then. plus, re4 was the shit.
haven't gotten into okami yet, even though i said i was going too!! ahhhhh!! gaming slump

It's so unnecessary I think. I'm not against it because maybe someone didn't play that one game a long time ago, just don't flood the market with them.

will you buy the first megaman game on ps4 at full price?
thats what i think faggot.

Because you can pass off gen 6 game off as modern by shoving enough post fx into it, but not a gen 5 or earlier game.

jesus do these retards never heard of emulators?
console gaming attracts the dumbest of people

Holy fuck, a physical PS4 copy. What? Why? This is something that should be exclusively on PSN.

I don't think a PS2/PS3 era game being rereleased is equivalent to an NES rerelease but okay.

it only costs $30 for the entire series

Because some people like collecting things phycially. I don't watch all my movies on Netflix or Amazon prime.

I can just keep my PS4? It's cheap anyways

Easy money.

How about remasters that are better than their original console counterparts.

>actually good frame rate

Many times better than the PS3 port.

Vanilla RE4 can run on IOS and android no problem friendo. Youre just being milked and giving game devs a reason to not make new games.

Because current gen (which are all basically PCs besides Nintendo) is enough of a leap from the last gens for them to finally get the solid performance on most older games that they should have had in the first place.
Not to mention that now that all the platforms (except Nintendo) are very similar, ports between them are easy especially if the game had a PC version on initial release.
Gonna echo what else has been said in this thread about laziness and low risk but honestly these ports/remasters are also nice for the purposes of archiving games.

for some reason this pisses people off because they're the same kind of people who sold all their games and the console to buy the next gen.
dumbasses

I do admit, it's annoying to have 5+ consoles plugged in because you still play them all regularly.

Even DLC is getting re-released physical discs.

It makes sense with Re4 since it's the greatest game ever made. Re4 switch port when?

Archiving games digitally.*
Didn't mean to reply to you, sorry.

>no rockman X4 +++
>it only includes all the pixelshit games that even the gba can run and fit in a single cartridge
>$30
the fuck lol

I can live with it being brokem into 2 $15 releases but the lack of games in the second collection really pissed me off.
All they needed to do was include the 2 arcade games and I would have been satisfied.

This thread makes me wanna buy an hdd and backup all the rom and emulators I can find before game dev faggots took them down

These

it's not just that, it's shit like the xbone backwards compatibility offering higher resolution and fps making the games better on the better hardware and they don't have to spend money on a new version

Same reason Kikeywood is almost nothing but remakes: People with money have no ideas left.

>include the 2 arcade games
honestly this plus powered up would have sold me

Is it really a bad thing that all these ports exist? What of I never played Resident Evil 4 on PS2 and want to play it on PS4?

why cant these games included for free when you buy consoles? like when you buy a switch the entire library of SNES and GBC are already there for you to enjoy just in case you cant afford new games

Lower the ratio to 4:3 and it won't look like ass. I use my PS2 on my HDTV all the time.

PS2 is like $12 used, literally cost nothing to flashcart and DVD writers exist.

Don't be stupid user
If people is stupid enough to buy the same game 5 times like with Skyrim, why companies should give anything for free?
And don't you dare complain about jews because then the shills will call you a dirty communist.

because they don't own the copyrights to all those games
because then you'd never buy a modern game since you're so satisfied with your gigantic library of built-ins

because capitalism works, people will spend money over and over for the same thing no matter how old. Why give it away for free?

Get the GC version. It's better than the PS2 version in every way. Just lacks that extra PS2 content.

GC version has better controls than the PS4/Xbox One versions too.

It's easier than dipping into the creative well to see what's swilling around

1) High profit
2) Creative drought
3) Nostalgia sells
4) Test the market for a sequel

that's still more expensive than just dropping the shit onto a console with no extra assets to create
also a lot of ground up remakes suffer from not having any competent art direction so the game ends up looking worse despite having higher quality assets

>because they don't own the copyrights to all those games
ok how about just nintendo games then like the old mario games?

Remastered in HD !

Because it's like the film industry; films are barely a century year old and ALREADY we're doing shitloads of remakes because we can't come up with anything else. We hit this same plateau with video games. There WILL be a point in the next ten years when rereleases get so bad that over 50% of games will be rereleases, because we'll have wasted all of our creative juices on dumb bullshit

that's only a problem with american hollywood films

Most of this port flooding is from Capcom. Tell me why did they separate Deadrising 1 and 2 into their own games instead of combining the two into one? Jews I tell you.

There's plenty of creativity to go around, it's just not profitable anymore.
Games have gotten more expensive because EVERYONE wants them to look visually amazing at the expense of EVERYTHING else.
No publisher wants to take risks because everything must sell, this is why you don't see obscure mid-budget gems anymore.

Wish I had a picture with a spray saying japanese worshipper be gone

If Valve made a console will it comes free with half life games or bare bones like the counterpart of their competitors?

Because backwards compatibility is gone for the most part

Anons here say the industry won't crash, but it will eventually crash at this rate.

Capcom comes from Japan not israel tho

It's nice to play old games.

there's more films than american hollywood films, even in america the indie scene is currently going through a big revitalization

They're Japanese EA.

Are the controls on the ps4 version better? I didn't like the pc one

Knowing Gabe he'll probably partition HL1, HL deathmatch, Portal and CS 1.6 in the HDD with split screen function.
He will shill and remind everyone of this a lot ofc to sell his product so it has a chance to compete with Sony and nintendo but hey, at least you'll never say Steambox has no games.

>re-released
First Light was never on PS3, you fucking moron.

They started printing First Light on discs sometime after it came out on the PSN store. Not sure why though.

>early 2000s
>people say a crash is coming
>DLC comes along and AAA is more profitable than ever
>late 2000s
>people say a crash is coming
>microtransactions come along and AAA is more profitable than ever
>early 2010s
>people say a crash is coming
>lootboxes come along and AAA is more profitable than ever

I never bothered with the PS3 so as far as I'm concerned, they can port all the exclusives to PS4.
Because it probably sold enough to justify it.
Works for me, just means that I can rent it after I beat Second Son.
Infamous HD Collection PS4 release when?

You know that AAA companies are one step from collapse, most companies that make their games and don't sell immediately go broke.
The cancerous ones like ubishit and Ea solely survive because they abuse out of the common denominator that is too stupid to care about how they spend their money.

What ports do you want to see on current generation? I want a Prince of Persia collection with the 2008 game.

It won't happen, but Graffiti Kingdom.
For something more likely, all 3 Pikmins on Switch.

And then an independent companies big and small make something like The Witcher 3, or Senua's sacrifice, or Cuphead.

You won't see a collapse. You'll just see companies shifting their priorities back and forth. If the micro transaction and loot box bubble bursts they'll just shift their priorities someplace else.

So you want companies to keep being as shitty as they are, good shill.
>NO THERE SHOULDN'T BE A COLLAPSE! WE SHOULD BE STUCK WITH THE SAME CANCEROUS FAGGOTS FOREVER

This

Its the fact that new games are awful. All of them. A look at any series shows that it was better on the Gamecube/360 than the current PS4/XB1 sequels.

Because the Cell was a stupid idea.

Generation got off to a bad start. 2013 was the launch of the Xbone and PS4 and 2014 was genuinely one of the worst years for video games. It wasn't until 2015 that shit started coming out.

I finished RE4 for the first time ever on PS4 so I agree with you

People will pay for the convenience of playing them on a new system, having to dust off your PS2, find all your old games and go through the trouble of hooking it up to a modern TV is too much effort for most people when they can simply buy it again for PS4/PC/Whatever.

There was .hack but the GU trilogy came out 2 months ago, so Vesperia

>all those old assets that got discarded or lost or literally burned to ashes
We could have had so many good remasters if the industry wasn't so naive back then. Especially those games that used prerendered environments.

because the PS4 can't play ps1, ps2, or ps3 games. can't wait for the remaster shit fuckers of this generation do it all over again when Sony brings out the PS5 without backwards compatibility, it's not like Sony double down on remasters while Microsoft went further than 360 games to bring original Xbox compatibility

Sony answers this with medievil ps1 remaster and ps3 vr remasters. glad to see gamers sucking remaster dicks, wouldn't want Bethesda to put out a new elder scrolls when they have Skyrim remaster, Skyrim remaster switch, and Skyrim VR oh you better believe that last one ain't free either. 90% of this generation remaster fetish can be attributed to Sony and PS4.

I know Sony and Microsoft did a ton, but like half of all of these remasters and collections are just from Capcom.
There's RE 0 and Remake
RE 4-6
DR1, 2, and OTR
Megaman collection 1 and 2
Megaman X collection
MVC3
DMC4 and DMC
Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter Collection

I know I missed a few but there's 16 remasters right there and all from Capcom.

Says the PS4 remaster tool cuck that remasters justify themselves with better framerate. Now let's take a look at bloodborne 30fps, dark souls 3 30fps, Witcher 3 30fps, uncharted 4 30fps, and horizon 30fps. so this is the power of 30fps being ok on ps4, but not on last gen. Tool, frame pacing in Bloodborne is horrible.

RE4 Wii if you can call it a remaster

Not with that shitty """controller""", get the wii version for the definitive RE4 experience, for some reason they fucked up the shadows and lighting in some places and forgot to touch up separate way's cutscenes for the ps4/ps3/360/xbone/pc ultimate HD ports, wii is a straight up port of GC RE4 with the additional content.

1. Consoles can actually do true HD now
2. Current gen development is expensive and ports keep the revenue in, as well as keep interest in properties alive between major releases.
3. Some games just really needed it, like Dead Rising, Dragon's Dogma and Voodoo Vince.
Ports are also often outsourced to separate companies so the argument that they take resources away from new projects is false.

>Using the baby tier wii controller
May as well use invincibility and cheats while you are at it.

Not sure if you had a PS3 last gen that you played multiplats on, but lets take DR2 for example.
It ran 1024x576, at an unlocked 30fps but closer to 25fps at all times, and had bad load times. The PS4 remaster nearly quadruples resolution to 1080p, doubles framerate to a locked 60fps, has load times about three times faster and includes DLC though arguably it's not a lot in DR2's case. All of that, and it routinely goes on sale for $8 which is the same price you can buy a used copy of it on PS3 at gamestop.
That's why these remasters are doing so well, and why more keep coming. Hell, I never bought the DLC for RE5 or RE6 and buying the PS4 remasters on sale was worth it for the DLC I never played alone.

>better controls are worse

>Controls that are so fucking good that they remove half of the challenge because the game wasn't made for them

You still have to learn how to crowd control. I can blast through RE4 just as easily with a normal controller than I can with the Wii controls.

>Consoles don't have BC (Xbox got a handful recently but it's still medicore)

>Consoles are now x86, so porting games from PC is easy & most of these "remasters" are PC ports, RE4 on PS4 is literally just the PC version with the shitty new texture pack, at least on PC you could turn it off, fuck you Capcom

>If you are not a FIFA/COD faggot, then there just isn't that many great games on PS4/Xbone, so older titles are very enticing (pic related, PS2's second Holiday alone probably trumps 4 years of PS4)
