The only reason bethesda allows modding is the modding is the main appeal behind Skyrim and Fallout 4.

People expect to play content years to come and willing to purchase extra content in a game they already put 1k+ hours into.

But, of course a console manufactor will prevent mods in their first party games, they are in a proprietary hardware and letting the end user have access to mod the game might open some way to jailbraking the console

The specific process is called genericization, and it occurs when your brand name becomes synonymous with the type or product or service it is. For example "frisbee" and "yo-yo" were originally specific brand names, but the terms became so widepsread that they as words ceased to just be a specific type of flying disc or string toy, but used as the name of those types of toys.

So, Nintendo was actually at risk for genericization back decades ago when people called any video game "a nintendo"; but obviously a pokemon fangame or whatever has zero risk of causing that, since there's no a a fangame would cause "pokemon" to be use das a generic term for any monster collecting game.

In short, it's a bullshit excuse.
