This was the peak of FPS games

>not a single cutscene in the entire game
>constant, uninterrupted gameplay

"No."

its tied with perfect dark as the best Sp FPS for different reasons

>not a single cutscene in the entire game
>constant, uninterrupted gameplay
>minimum dialogue
>story told through real time gameplay
>extremely immersive
>no unskippable animations for picking up items, opening doors, pressing buttons etc.

How did they fuck up Half-Life 2? It could have been perfect.

run to the iced over lake and start spawning monsters to fight eachother

>not a single cutscene in the entire game

But Douk did have cutscenes.

youtube.com/watch?v=DQWUXtsIKO4

Replay it with SMOD.

You know I actually got around to finally playing through Unreal the entire way after all these years recently because it was like 2 dollars during the steam sale. The entire time I was thinking "why the fuck does everyone sperg out about half life while this gets ignored". Unreal is on par if not better than half life.

is that... quake?

>How did they fuck up Half-Life 2? It could have been perfect.
it practically was.

the best part where the mods it spawned

Half life 2 is a shit reddit meme spouting pile of shit

youtube.com/watch?v=mpCv12q6fFI

I was just meaming

It's Unreal.

No.

(You) need to go back.

It got thrown under the rug by Half-Life, and Half-Life's innumerable mods. Unreal is an incredible video game lost to time by the masses.
Replay it with SMOD etc.

Unreal, the beginning of a massive 2 decade pedigree of 10/10 shooters, right up until Unreal "gears of war assets" Tournament 3

not really
>slow as fuck
>bad platforming
>unsatisfying gunplay
>boring fights and AI doesn't even pretend it isn't pants on head retarded

They did not. It's "cool" to bitch about HL2 because there was time (almost ten years ago) when it was a Reddit's favorite game - mind you, this was time where Reddit was still small enough to be considered a somewhat unified community - and since this also was the time of greatest Sup Forums-to-reddit animosity, everybody around here bitched at HL2 to prove how much not-Reddit they are. This was further fueled by console kids who hated HL2 with a passion for being brought up in comparisons with their at the time incredibly popular console shooters.

Today, people still parrot shit from that era, even though most of them were probably not even born at the time, because it became part of the Sup Forums culture.

why the fuck do I not remember this part ...

>Unreal "gears of war assets" Tournament 3
Mostly because the engine was pretty ass.
2004 was pretty great

>slow as fuck
you need to be on Speed to find THAT "slow".
>bad platforming
It has way LESS platforming than HL1.
>unsatisfying gunplay
Gravity gun is one of the most innovative and satisfying weapons of all time. Shotgun just werks. Magnum pierces. Explosives have oomph. MP7 is a nice, loud rattatata spewer.
>boring fights and AI doesn't even pretend it isn't pants on head retarded
the fights are fine, and while the AI isn't quite as emotive as in HL1, it gets the job done.

>tfw the blatant input reading by skaarj on higher difficulties

Otherwise a near perfect game, some of the Nali villages are top tier comfy, especially skyhaven

Jesus christ, I'm 4 minutes in this and it just so iritaiting.
>DURRR HE GAVE ME A CROWBAR WHAT A STINK PIECE OF SHIT, ALL IT TRIES TO PANDER TO FANS.
>DURRR WHO IS KLAINER, IS THAT THIS NPC, OR THAT NPC FOR FIRST GAME
>DURRRRRRR LOOK HOW SMART I'M

I bet its (you)r video and you just hope for more views

Well be careful you'll hurt someone

I played Half Life again, fuck it's a good game, except Surface Tension, that was a bit shit & is probably responsible for COD & all it's clones, a generation of devs grew up on that level & wanted a whole game like it

literally no argument

>ACfag is OP
Oh, this should be good

>mediocre guns and gun variety, especially the default pistol and AR are such boring trash and you spend a lot of time with them
>mediocre enemies and enemy variety
>unskippable pseudo-cutscenes, too much focus on max b-tier story in general
>vehicle and/or puzzle sections that aged like milk left out in the desert sun
nah
It's a mediocre fps, especially by todays standards, while other games have held up much better

Or maybe some of us didn't play it as our first FPS and can regard it with an objective eye not blinded by nostalgiagoggles
It's not a bad game by any means, it's just mediocre and very annoying to see it touted as this perfect fps everyone has to have played when its flaws are glaringly obvious and when the predecessor is better in many regards

The engine wasn't the problem, the problem was it looked like it should have been somewhere in the Gears series, it was called unreal tournament yet had nothing to do with the Liandri tournament itself, it would have made much more sense to call it unreal 3, the main character looks like fucking Dom almost exactly, same color pallet of sparsely used muddy colors and 5000 shades of gray, got rid of assault, massively overpowered vehicles, watered down movement mechanics
Shit I could go on and on, I grew up playing UT games, UT3 was a massive disappointment on every level

And why the absolute fuck is it called UT3? It's the 4th game in the series.

How come 90% of all youtube gamers have that squeaky "gamer voice"? Seriously, do they do that on purpose? At least he's not trying to sound fake enthusiastic by trying to imitate some newscasters like some other youtube gamers do.

I agree with his commentary though, Half-Life 2 sucks. Well, maybe it doesn't *suck* suck, but it's boring as shit and shits all over what made Half-Life 1 so good. I recently replayed all the Half-Life games for the heck of it and it was all good, until Half-Life 2. Those constant fucking interruptions where I had to just stand around and listen to people talk talk talk talk got really boring really fast. Ravenholm was still fucking awesome. Too bad that's only a fraction of the game and rest is just boring shit.

No, it was the beginning of the end. Linearity and scripted sequences. HL could do it relatively well, most of the HL-like after couldn't.

The peak of FPS games was the Build Engine games.

Sorry friend

>Or maybe some of us didn't play it as our first FPS and can regard it with an objective eye not blinded by nostalgiagoggles
I was 15 when HL2 was released, and I actually got to play it for the first time many years after it was released. I'm pretty sure I did play Painkiller before I first picked HL2, in fact.

And no. You do not even know what the word "Medieocre" means. It's everything but that. It has a number of issues and flaws, like just about every game does, but it is also a masterpiece in design in many, MANY ways, moving the formula of the genre forwards almost as much as the first one did.

btw. Prime example of the "gamer voice"
youtube.com/watch?v=6XsS2uYcCz8

you're practically complaining about the same shit that was present in original HL, and not even realizing it. That's some tight goggles you got there.

I'd rather have cutscenes than being locked in a room until people are done talking/shit is done happening.

At least you can do fancy stuff with camerawork in cutscenes to make it look more interesting.

>moving the formula of the genre forwards almost as much as the first one did.
This is irrelevant when regarding the game at face value
Other fps games have pushed the standards forward and are still really fun to play nowadays
HL2 has some pretty good parts, but much of it is boring, challengeless slog

>Those constant fucking interruptions where I had to just stand around and listen to people talk talk talk talk got really boring really fast
This is an exaggeration and you know it. d1_trainstation_06 starts with Barney giving you the crowbar. The rest of that map, and then d1_canals_01 is fleeing from metropolice, concluding with a citizen and his vortigaunt friend directing you to the underground railroad. World building. Then it's two maps of even more action with a short break with the citizen who is hiding that introduces you to manhacks. World building. Whole game is like this except at Black Mesa East which pretty much stops the whole game and whatnot.

You can also make cutscenes skippable

But that's not immersive!

I like the first half of Half Life 1 a lot
I like the second half of Half Life 2 a lot

>webm
At this point, why not just play FEAR?

that's not Unreal Tournament 2004 you fucking casulfag

>>not a single cutscene in the entire game
there's one when freeman gets captured

Fucking boring ass game, slow as fuck, you walk 5-10 minutes in a straight line until you can find any enemy even though there is no dialogue or story.

S-sauce on this webm?

>SMOD
Is that still going? last time i looked at it a couple of years ago it was hopelessly broken.

It was a shame because it was probably the most fun I've ever had in an FPS.

Because FEAR is shit. Hype it up all you want, but the truth is FEAR had terrible gunplay hidden behind overblown particle impact effects, and braindead AI that just chattered a lot while running in circles and getting caught in environment interaction loops.

I complained about everything hl1 had that hl2 didn't
>tight goggles
wrong. played both games for the first time one after another in 2014. 1 blew me away with its level design, tight controls, satisfying guns.
hl2 had none of that
except episode 2 - it was the tits

>Because FEAR is shit.
Should have stated that from the start user-kun, no need to waste our time with pretend arguing when you were secretly a drooling retard all along

Sounds a lot like HL2 desu

The customization of difficulty. SMOD is already much harder than vanilla HL2, but it adds new enemies, new enemy placements, and new in-game events. You can turn up how much of an aimbotting piece of shit the Combine are, you can give them shields, you can make them throw grenades every 5 seconds, you can have random Combine spawn with 4-8 times as much health as the average Combine soldier, you can randomize what weapons they spawn with, AND customize the weapon randomization yourself so that they only spawn with bullshit weapons. The first metrocop you encounter can have a fucking minigun. I love turning everything almost to the highest difficulty and seeing if I can get through the game. You can really fuck yourself over with these settings, and it's such a blast to try and do it anyway. It's far and away from what FEAR is.
SMOD Redux V8 Bossnoob's edit.
You last looked maybe 5 years ago. SMOD is fixed and Redux released its final version recently. It's incredible. I just like V8 because it uses the beta Combine models.

>level design,
corridors with boxes > varied eastern European coastline with alien areas? "OK"
>tight controls,
literally the same controls
>satisfying guns.
yeah, that SMG, pistol and bee-gun were so "satisfying" to use. Not.

oh look the HL2 children flocked to shit up the thread

>l-love my shitty babbies first FPS or y-you're reddit!!!

game is thrash, you are are trash.

Bona fide shitpost

Agree with this. It's the small things like how in hl1 movement speed increases and decreases smoothly, whereas in hl2 you press W and you instantly move at constant speed and pressing shift kicks the HEV's vtec in and you're running at like 20mph instantaneously.

Nah mate that wasn't me.

Came here to post this.

best fps game is a really shitty fps?

Unreal's actual gunplay and movement mechanics were fairly garbage.

anybody remember clive barker's undying

even the quake engine Star Wars games are better fps.

Dodging in four directions was really intuitive. Dancing around with skaarj who would dodge your attacks, close the gap with melee, back off and shoot you was great. Mix and matching alt fires and primary fires against enemies was great. What are you talking about?

"Welcome to the Black Mesa, 10 minutes of your life wasted system"

I love Half Life, but honestly, this was one of the only major flaws after the first playthrough.

Unreal is one of my all time favorite games. That opening is masterful, and every time I leave that crashed ship, I know it's going to be an adventure.

>that framerate drop every time the shotgun hits anything
lmao

>corridors with boxes > varied eastern European coastline with alien areas? "OK"
just because something 'looks nice' doesn't mean it's deisgned well.
>literally the same controls
except the character responds differently. in hl1 it's quick, tight, precise. hl2 is floaty as hell.
>yeah, that SMG, pistol and bee-gun were so "satisfying" to use. Not.
both smg and pistol handle better in 1 than in 2. the smg AND the shotgun in 2 are a joke

You heard it here first and it definitely isn't just contrarians trying to sound knowledgeable by shitting on widely held beliefs.

They're basically the flat earthers of the vidya world.

halo is better.

map c1a0

the crysis series really blew me away, specifically crysis 1 and warhead. crysis 1 and warhead was almost the perfect game and the groundwork was there for a perfect multiplayer but the concept was just wrong. enemies were actually smart, and its the only time i ever saw semi smart computer enemies ever. amazing visuals and level design. still the best single player fps experience i ever played.

>just because something 'looks nice' doesn't mean it's deisgned well.
Yet you've not stated how HL2's maps would NOT be well designed.

>hl2 is floaty as hell.
Negative. Are you using raw input?

>the smg AND the shotgun in 2 are a joke
literally the same or better than in HL1, with more feedback on enemies.

Imagine playing Crysis in November of 2007 with a GeForce 7600 at 5-15fps the entire game. After that, nothing phases you.

I will never understand people who rate a game lower because other games that came after it were shitty.

Someone please fucking explain to me how that kind of logic works.

>All that blood on every touch with the wall
Is Freeman a jam donut or something?

fuck off Todd

What sound does it make, Sup Forums?

they would rather hold responsible the people who just made a game instead of the people who copied it
it's bizarre

WHOOOM WHOOOM WHOOOM WHOOOM

The hev panel sounds way cooler

What do you think the scientists in Blue Shift meant by
>Shouldn't you be guarding some donuts and coffee right about now?

>not a single cutscene in the entire game

technically true, but hl fanboys need to get it through their dumbass heads that forcing the player to sit still in the corner for 2-3 minutes at several points isn't any better than watching cutscenes. its worse. you cant skip them

>not a single cutscene
>true
BODY? WHAT BODY?

You awkwardly dodge when you double tab keys. Even the most hardcore veterans of Unreal 1 acknowledge it was never a smooth and intuitive movement.

As for the weapons the default pistol has a slow movement speed which only makes its alternative charge up even worse. Against high mobility opponents it's fairly useless and even the brutes seem to laugh at you when you use it, not even flinching from the damage. The automag also feels quite weak, making a putt putt putt noise, doing low amounts of damage, having a reload time and just not connecting with its alternate fire. Stinger has a completely unnecessary cooldown after its alternate fire when it should be more consistent. Biorifle travels too short a distance. ASMD's combination attack gives a very poor indication of where it's actually hitting (this is fixed in UT), minigun primary fire should be far more accurate for its slow rate. Eightball loads FAR TOO FUCKING SLOWLY. When you're playing Unreal Tournament 2004 you can easily tell they regret making the load that slow. Flak cannon feels good I'm not going to comment on it. Razorjack's alternate fire requires such immense precision to hit anything that you would basically be better off buying a lottery ticket. Sniper rifle is good to use but ridiculously powerful for its fire rate and accuracy. Also it lacks a scope. The expansion pack introduced some better weapons.

>>not a single cutscene in the entire game
yeah, instead you had to deal with 'in game' scripted cinematic moments that you were unable to skip. shit was fucking cancer. skipable cutscenes would have been much better than the bullshit in that game.

DE DE DUUUUUUUUMMM VRRRRRRRRRRRUUUUUMMVRRRRRRUUUUUM

>he didn't play Half life in 1998 in software mode 320x240 60 fps
>he doesn't take in the amazing atmosphere of that glorious intro ride again and again and again with pleasure
Fuck off faggot.

he reminds me of that angry squirrel from Newgrounds

the hl 1 engine was so fucking amazing. spent so much time in tfc and science and industry and custom maps in my late teens i practically lived there. tfw its gone and wont be the same

>contrarians
>t. same faggot who said that FEAR is shit

I unironically think that Perfect Dark for the N64 is 50x better than Half Lie and anyone who disagrees with me is a Redditor.

As a low movement based shooter it's pretty good but Half-Life has verticality and a feverish pace.

>tfw this entire thread is now just shitposting and a guy posting the brutal doom version of hl2

>>mediocre guns and gun variety

This was one of the worst things by far, after OP4 had two dozen weapons , the pathetic arsenal of hl2 was a huge letdown , even the gravity guns antics didnt make up for it.

>scientist
>defeat the entire swat by himself
>never create or build anything

Can we all agree at least that the story is motherfucking retarded? They should have made him a soldier.

>You awkwardly dodge when you double tab keys.
What's awkward about it?
>Even the most hardcore veterans of Unreal 1 acknowledge it was never a smooth and intuitive movement.
That's quite surprising. Double tap. Bang, dodged a skaarj projectile.
>As for the weapons the default pistol has a slow movement speed which only makes its alternative charge up even worse
You pick up the automag right after you leave the Vortex Rikers.
>Against high mobility opponents it's fairly useless
Lead your shots.
>and even the brutes seem to laugh at you when you use it, not even flinching from the damage
Which is just a great detail and not a negative against the game at all. Really hope you're kidding on this one.
>The automag also feels quite weak, making a putt putt putt noise, doing low amounts of damage
Yes, the second weapon in the game is not the BFG 9000. Are you foreal right now?
>having a reload time
To balance out the higher rate of fire than the energy pistol.
>and just not connecting with its alternate fire
Accurate not as fast fire as opposted to inacurrate, rapid fire.
>Stinger has a completely unnecessary cooldown after its alternate fire
If the cool down wasn't there then you wouldn't use the primary fire. Balance.
>when it should be more consistent
Should it? Why? Says who?
>Biorifle travels too short a distance
Is it? How? When facing what enemies?
>ASMD's combination attack gives a very poor indication of where it's actually hitting
Experiment.
>minigun primary fire should be far more accurate for its slow rate
This is probably the first thing you said I agree with.
>Eightball loads FAR TOO FUCKING SLOWLY
Balance.

>When you're playing Unreal Tournament 2004 you can easily tell they regret making the load that slow
...UT2004's rocket launcher has only three rockets.
>Flak cannon
Yep.
>Razorjack's alternate fire requires such immense precision to hit anything that you would basically be better off buying a lottery ticket
Yeah I can dig that.
>Sniper rifle is good to use but ridiculously powerful for its fire rate and accuracy.
There is scarce ammo for that thing. Balance.
>Also it lacks a scope.
Right click to zoom.
>The expansion pack
Still haven't finished it.

Valve was pandering to Reddit soyboy STEM majors who wanted to be able to project themselves on able badass scientist meme man.

>brutal doom version of hl2
It's more the F.E.A.R version of HL2. You should play it.

>>no unskippable animations for picking up items, opening doors, pressing buttons etc.
>peak of anything
