I've played both and PS2 with CRT was marginally better.

PS2 has annoying loading times all the damn time

Not much at all. As an oldass SH fan, I do still consider the PS2 originals to be the "proper" way of experiencing these games.

That being said, if you do appreciate visual clarity (and ease of access for most), the PC ports are superb. Especially with the modern fixes. Here's the SH PC Guide + links again :

Follow that SH2 widescreen page's instructions to the teeth, and you should be alright.

>general Protips
-Play these games in the release order!
-Never play below Normal difficulty.
-Replaying them all is recommended.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting,
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors.
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help.

Are you just one person or is there like a whole cult of you? How are you always posting this in every single SH thread without fail?

CRT is the way to go with these games. The PC port's good if you fix it up, but the ps2 is somewhat better in ways other than display resolution.

Not nearly as bad as playing it on PS3.

Reminder to go into options and to turn the noise/grain filter OFF

Play on a modern TV with component cables instead of composite.

The noise filter looks fine on PS2 and CRT
Bad advice. The video will still be interlaced, 4:3 ratio, and you won't have scanlines to hide a bunch of ugliness. Plus blacks and contrast are generally better on CRTs.

You got it backwards.

Looks fantastic to me.

Just as long as its not the hd version its fine. Ps2/crt if you really want to feel nostalgic. Pc if you like to tinker around graphical settings without fucking up too much of the intended atmospheric feel

If I got a dime for every time someone asks that these days... I'd had a dollar.

>Reminder to go into options and to turn the noise/grain filter OFF
No.

>Pc if you like to tinker around graphical settings
There's not that many graphical settings, and if you just install the latest fixes as instructed, you're ready to go with best possible visuals out of the box.

cant see shit captain, looks horrible

Always the best user

it looks way better in motion, obviously.

Isn't the PS2 version the only version with the legit and best shadow system?

Arguable.
The trump-card of PS2 (and Xbox) version defenders for the past few years has been its "soft" projection shadows, which can make the scenes look a tad more realistic at times, while PC version has "sharp" shadows, a la Doom3 and FEAR.
It's unclear how much of this "softness" in PS2 version is due to the game's low 480i resolution and potentially low-res shadows being upscaled and thus blurred up.

PC version however has a few lighting based aces up its sleeve as well, namely the use of Per-Pixel lighting over the blocky Per-Vertex the PS2 version uses. This results those actually smooth flashlight beams, and does not highlight the tesselated walls at all.

I remember seeing a video at some point about it. It was something exclusive to the PS2's hardware that made the shadows possible and why it never made it to other ports on more powerful systems. If I remember it correctly

that looks smoooooth

Yes, I've seen the same video I believe. PS2, while very underwhelming specs-wise, had some pretty fast elements and unique design choices, that let the devs easily blur practically any element on the HW side, before the scene being rendered on the screen. The other consoles and even typical PC GPUs still struggled with this during the very early 00s. The downside of this was that devs loved to use various blur effects everywhere in tons of PS2 games, for no apparent reason.

That being said, the shadow FORMAT and method is identical in both PS2 and PC versions. Their output is just slightly different, and which "version" you prefer will greatly depend on the person playing the game.

the PC ports are smooth as butter now.

Do you ever sleep?
thanks though

>Do you ever sleep?
Sleep is for faggots.

>ps2 with a CRT TV
Arguably the BEST way to play the original SH games, unless you're an extreme graphics fag. Still, the PC versions are good to have.

original hardware is always a good way to play the original games.

I would say playing SH2 on a CRT would be a better experience overall. However, if you want to truly appreciate the attention to detail to the backgrounds, do play it on a PC too.

im doing this now actually. ive a large flat screen with red, white, & yellow hooked up and i don't like it (from my ps2 obviously). i don't have a crt anywhere so this is my only option. im pretty certain it would look "prettier" with crt, but im no expert on this subject.

Also Silent Hill music & sound effects are GOAT.

This part was too much for me, had to quit

I plugged in my old PS2 to my 40" HD LED TV using its own SCART last fall and played some SH2 and 3 like that for a while. I was personally quite amazed how damn good the games looked like that.

PS2 still has some superior elements that the PC port got wrong but they are very, very minor. The increased resolution and especially the load times make the PC the best way to play in my opinion, and I'm a huge Silent Hill purist that owns the games physically. SH2, 3, and 4 just look god damn beautiful at high res.

except in this case
or any other case really

why is the torrent link from the copypasta so damn slow lads

>buying the same damn game 3 times

autism

>except in this case
I don't quite agree.

in my time, it was called "being a collector".
plus one of the copies is my wife's

Either poor seeders, or problem with your connections. I'm sharing as we speak.

>-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help.

How do you mean? just with monsters? or any other reasons?

Monsters have a harder time seeing when the light is off

Yeah speed improved a bit. Thanks dude

ps2 version is best. pc port is shit, emulation has a few bugs

Is it possible to play any of the PC ports at a 21:9 aspect ratio?

>pc port is shit
It isn't the fucking HD collection, yes there are some problems but they are ultimately autistic nitpicks that nobody that isn't already extremely familiar with every detail of the game will never notice except maybe the fog, which is now fixed and isn't even a big deal. The minor issues are more than made up for by playing without obnoxious load times and at high resolutions. I say this as someone who owns the games on PS2.

Would look incredibly horrible due to how narrow and tiny most environments in the game are.

>finished SH1 for the first time

I got stuck on two places, first in hospital when I didn't notice that a button for the 4th floor appeared and another puzzle that I can't recall right now.

All in all good game but framerate on real hardware is horrendous. Single digit a lot of the damn time.

you can literally remain undetected if you move slowly (or run like hell) with flashlight off. Flicking it around also can confuse some foes.

Attaboy.
Which ending did you get? Anything else you'd like to share about the ride?

Yes, all of them, AFAIK.

...

Good +. I had to load a save and waste a lot of time on getting the vial from the motorcycle after I realized that I most likely can't go back when shit shifted to otherworld on that bridge. It took me a bit of time.

Also what was the point of finding a key/opening the safe with the drugs? You don't pick them up, does that even do anything for the endings or further dialogues?

I played on normal because Sup Forums said to avoid hard. It's fun and I enjoyed it thoroughly however like I said framerate is incredibly bad on real hardware. I don't imagine NTSC release is much better because this is around 10 fps for the most time. And I am someone who has played ps1 games regularly for the past decade and aren't exactly stranger to the system and the norms of the games.

Ended up missing 12 items judging by the result screen, all in all not too bad. Had to save about 60 times due to experiencing a memcard corruption so had to double save just in case. Thank fuck SH1 doesn't show up the amount of times you open the map like that other SH game because I opened that motherfucker every 30 seconds or so.

Think I'm gonna replay them on PC then. I'll probably still check how they look on my CRT though

...

>Good+
Pretty impressive. I take you followed some guide? I don't think anyone could achieve that on their first run, all blind.

>Also what was the point of finding a key/opening the safe with the drugs?
indirect story telling about the town's history.
if you read enough newspaper clips, police reports, etc, Harry will literally say different things to himself after Kauffman leaves, realizing his connections with the town's drug trafficking biz.

>I don't imagine NTSC release is much better because this is around 10 fps for the most time
Hard to say, but that 1/5th faster overall performance is noticeable, once you get used to NTSC.

Both are great options. It really boils down to your personal preferences.

No, I just rushed towards the lighthouse and halfway over the bridge things shifted and I figured there is a lot I haven't discovered so I reloaded once I figured I won't be able to go back. I did miss some other stuff, I remember reading in a thread recently that you could actually access the school bus but I haven't found the bus at all. I also missed the gas canister.

Game gives you a nifty pseudo-over the shoulder camera after you finish it so I might give it a chance again at some point in that mode.

Why is Silent Hill the perfect series to show to girls who don't play games?

I'm most surprised about the fact that You figured out to use the Bottle to get the liquid + then USE it at the right location. That's what required for the "+" endings, regular "Good" just demands fooling around in the South Park for that side quest -like event.

>Game gives you a nifty pseudo-over the shoulder camera after you finish it so I might give it a chance again at some point in that mode.
color me surprised. I seldom see other people even know of that "first person view". Even many vets seem to have missed it.
That being said, it's not exactly a "mode", per se, but a tad handier replacement for your Search View.

-Story driven
-With good, mature stories at that
-With loads of symbolism
-Fairly slow paced
-Not filled with endless gore or titties

I played a lot of point and click adventures in my time dude.

Though I did read about the OTS camera after I finished the because I wanted to see what is new in the new game mode. That would require fucking around to figure on your own to be honest.
What I also didn't know is that while you are holding R1 to raise the gun, apparently L1 serves as actual aiming button, as in holding it will focus the accuracy. I only realized this on the game result screen because there are different stats for each.

I also have no idea what the fuck ampoules do exactly as I only came upon couple of them and looking it up resulted in conflicting opinions. I played sh2, 3 and 4 before and I also had no idea what they did since medkits always replenished the health fully.

>I wanted to see what is new in the new game mode.
Depending on your performance (and sometimes how many-th NG+ you're on), you can unlock all sorts of crazy and cool stuff.

>I also have no idea what the fuck ampoules do exactly as I only came upon couple of them and looking it up resulted in conflicting opinions.
They're the series' "Full heal" items, that also provide short lasting damage reduction bonus.

>I played sh2, 3 and 4 before
such a shame.
