Because there are two types of games, story games and gameplay games. Story games are mostly made for men who like war, so women are underrepresented in most AAA story games. The other type, gameplay games, are mostly made by Nintendo. Because gameplay games don't do anything to drive women away like the manly story games, it looks like women are over represented, when in reality the distribution is equal rather than being almost exclusively male.
