No they're fucking not. They all gameplay and failure states. You cannot progress if you cannot overcome the challenge. They're still video games. Calling them VNs is like calling Monkey Island a VN.

Contrast Katawa Shoujo, Steins;Gate, Saya no Uta, etc. which actually are VNs where the entire experience is talking portraits and there's no gameplay outside of the occasional decision for different routes.

The pack of dungeons and I mean memorable dungeons in recent Tales games is hurting them for me. I miss the 6 hour cluster fuck that was the elf forest from Symphonia and the shitty lightning dungeon from that game as well. It made the Sorcerer Ring interesting. Now in Bersaria it's just walking through with puzzles involving activating a switch next to the door. I know I said the dungeons above were shit and clusterfucks but they have a real sense of accomplishment to finally get to the end of. I'll be starting Zesteria after I finish Bersaria and I know the dungeons are even worse.

FFT is a perfect game.

It's actually my favorite game ever but I hate how many people bandwagon it when they obviously have no frame of reference in srpgs and refuse to discuss the flaws. I can't get a decent discussion about it anywhere because the rest of the fanbase is a bunch of casuals who only play it as a gamer chic thing.

VN's have bad ends too. Eroge do too. Some of the Taimanin games have ends where you have to fail to get the good end. Same with Euphoria and Maggot Baits, the latter being impossible to get the end of the game without failing.

When big media companies start saying it’s going to revolutionise gaming and shit like that, some expectations are fostered. That game got tons of coverage in gaming media. None of it negative. Every time it was hyped up to be the greatest game ever made.

Yes they are open world, moddable, can be "roleplayed" using different stats items or character looks, yes you can interact with most of the items and have things such as crafting, good music, good environments, etc but they have a lot of things to work on their games like maybe the writing, quests, choices, player agency, combat, maybe make a new moddable game engine which could end most of the bugs and glitches. There needs a lot of improving here, fo4 is literally almost unfixable to have fun on despite the good gunplay and crafting. Please TODDDDDDDDDDDDD
