prolly similar reasons that Quantum Break flopped
it didn't appeal to the normie crowd
I actually really enjoyed both so I can only speculate

From what I recall it sold around 3 or 4 million. That's probably all you should expect from a horror game. It's a pretty niche genre.

Why was Alan so woke tho

>Uncharted : Spooky Edition
The combat was repetitive as fuck with the flashlight mechanic.
Wish it was still on steam though, I missed my shot at it.

Linear as fuck with a predictable story but I have quite fond memories of it. Shame about no chance of a real sequel

It actually doesn't call itself horror at all, it's officially a "psychological thriller". Which to be fair is more accurate since it really is not a horror game.

really what the fuck about this game. While I really enjoyed the campaign and was enganged with the story, by the end I just kek'd of how much I wasn't understanding. "It's not a lake, it's an ocean."
Maybe I should play it again and give the notes more attention

I bet you it originally said "A Psychological Action Horror" and the marketing department told them to take out the word horror. I wonder if it even originally said action. It probably just said "A Psychological Horror".

I'm just reminded of the "A Film Noir Love Story" tagline being removed from the cover of Max Payne 2 for the console versions.

The combat was solid. It just should have had more enemy variety. Beating the same rural retard a 100 times over got old real fast.

I liked the songs

Because it sucked and that ending was fucking terrible.

name a better Stephen King style horror game

Yeah, I wish more big developers would account for that and make horror games that fit the budget and style of their niche.

i thought it got platinum hits tho

child sex party: sewer edition

>game

It was alright but got repetitive fast. Microsoft raped it by demanding it go from a PC-focused physics-based disaster game to an xbox shooter.

>Get led by the hand from place to place and railroaded into following the story instead of the game being designed in a way that organically leads to you the story instead of all but putting you on fucking rails.

Utter trash. Dropped it a few hours in. I don't know how the fuck you call a game a 'psychological thriller' if you don't even give the player the illusion of agency.

AND NOW TO SEE YOUR LOVE SET FREEEE

it's a very niche kinda title, in a horror genre that was slowly dying because the penumbra team hadn't struck gold yet and revitalized the genre. It's game structure is also incredibly jarring (but would frankly do a lot better nowadays since people are so used to games being chopped up and sold to them bit by bit, like hitman).

It's just a weird thing. The issues surrounding it's release with legal battles and other shit hurt it a lot, and the game getting pulled from stores a year or two back most definitely didn't help matters.

kinda surprised none of his stuff has been adapted.

the only horror story he's written is Salem's Lot. most adaptations would be action survival with scary moments. IT would be an RPG. Dark Tower would either be an RDR clone or a JRPG.

Delayed for so long everyone forgot about it

you get two pillllls in the morning and THEN YOUR NICE AND CALM ALL DAY LONG

It was originally planned to be open world, more in vein of Deadly Premonition

Pic related.

THERE ARE 65 MILLION COWS AND PIGS IN THE WORLD!

good for one playthrough, lots of Twin peaks and Stephen King references. like other people have referenced, it gets repetitive, I believe this could have the best lighting from last gen, but my memory could serve me wrong. Originally, the game was supposed to be open world, but I am glad it became linear.
6.5/10

...

Why did it get pulled from steam?

>more in vein of Deadly Premonition

Not quite. It was basically going to be the same game, just in an open world. It's not like there was going to be all this interaction with town folk and a huge amount of side content or anything. They realized being open world didn't really add anything to their game except a whole heap of back and forth boring travel and so they changed it to a linear design.

most probably licensing problems with the songs that play after each episode

it was pulled form everywhere not just steam.

yep, this was exactly it. remedy didn't want to pay up the ass to re up the music rights (i guess american nightmare was cheaper because they re-upped the music license on that) so they had a huge final 90% off sale to give everyone a last opportunity to buy it.

That's exactly what it was. According to Remedy they had only licensed the music for seven years. Re-licensing is apparently too much of a pain in the ass and they couldn't be bothered doing another build of the game without the licensed music.

Combat was the best part but the structure was stupid (arena;walk with dialogue scripts;arena;walk with dialogue scripts; ar)
And i didnt care about the story past 6 hours.
Also fuck his wife.

It came out the same week as red dead redemption

Was a mess from very early in development. Initially a mystery game where you explore town by day and solve crimes and shoot fuckers by night, furthering the idea that Alan may be totally fucking bonkers. Was going to have sidequests at one point but that got scrapped quick. Driving was going to be more integral, the plot was supposed to be a lot more intense and there was going to be a lot more stuff involving the art of others. Still a cool game with some really nice scenery and legitimately cool combat for the first while.

because it was fucking boring

released on the same month as red dead if i remember right.

this

i like sam lakes games but Quantum Break memes aside didnt play well and Alan Wake played even worse

I just want Max Payne 4 for fuck sake i dont care about anal wake or Quantum Cuck

Here's what i'd do for Max Payne 4

>Max Is even older
>he's in physical pain all the time
>aka metal gear solid syndrome
>set it in new york winter again
>go full sin city tier crazy shit

This would be fine if it wasn't for the games troubled development. I remember seeing about it being developed for many years longer than most games. They also changed it around a bunch from the original vision.

>yfw Max Payne 1 was scarier and felt way darker than Alan Wake was

>spent money on licenced songs
Thats what killed it.

i enjoyed this and quantum break but it still bewilders me why microsoft tried the tv show as a game format again after alan wake fizzled. alan wake was also further proof that developers shouldn't bother using real music. not only do you have to waste money is getting rights then you have to waste more money or renewing those rights again and again. stop doing this and use that money for gameplay.

YOU WILL NEED THE WITCH'S CABIN KEY
FIND THE LADY OF THE LIGHT
GONE MAD WITH THE NIGHT
THAT'S HOW YOU RESHAPE DESTINY

despite its flaws this game had some really nice moments

Remember how Alan Wake was supposed to be open world? I wonder if it was a good or a bad thing that it wasn't.

Queation: i really liked AW years ago and i want something similar, any suggestion? Is deadly premonition any good?

Because it was originally Xbox360 exclusive and loyal Sonybros boycotted it because of that.

Possibly a bad thing. It seems like they had a good open world formula. Fight your way from one light source to another, trying to avoid enemies when you can and pick up supplies along the way. So long as they kept the world very small and focused it might've worked really well.

Definitely a good thing.
That being said it could have done without most of the long driving sections

Got beat by the better game, duh.

It was boring as shit

And it kills my soul that it didn't end up happening. If you look at the map and compare it to areas you actually move through in-game, which are often quite huge treks mind you, it all matches and you can see the various locations in the distance. The open-world map data is all still there, you just can't get to it because of invisible walls.

Maybe they would have added meaningful content if they had went with the original design. Maybe they would have made the perfect game of all time, cured cancer and brought back Pepsi Blue. We'll never know.

I fucking knoooow! I think we had the exact same experience. I even got a used copy that didn't have the code for the DLC redeemed, beat the whole thing in a few days with full achievements, and I didn't have a single idea what the fuck was going on. I've seen people posting that quote like it's supposed to be some insane revelation, like something in the league of ''Would you kindly'', and it's literally like you said! ''Wut''

Still mad that I bought this for 360 then I find out that I have pay more once the game is done to see the real ending or some shit

I never bought it so I don't know what the hell happened
Alan falls in the lake and his skeleton faced wife survived?

youtube.com/watch?v=jDQ3jAdELf4

>alan wake was hard to understand
sasuga, Sup Forums

...

The gist of it is,

>Darkness steals Alan's wife.
>Darkness empowers Alan's writing and mind controls him, allowing the Darkness to extend it's reach across the countryside rather than be stuck in Cauldron Lake.
>Alan tries to stop it and learns about Diving Suit Man.
>Same thing happened to Diving Suit Man.
>He tried the deus ex machina of "And then I pulled my wife from the depths and everything was okay".
>But that's a writing cop-out, so his wife came out fucked up.
>Alan realizes he needs to make sacrifices for it to work.
>Swaps places with his wife instead of just pulling her out.

so was that the music that did this game in?

No, that was original stuff written by Poets of the Fall which have been long time fans of Remedy.

It was other stuff that mostly showed up during the chapter 'credits'.

youtube.com/watch?v=qXYYPAnT2S0
youtube.com/watch?v=jD7nOstZ5ew

The "It's not a lake, it's an ocean" line is up for debate. It could be the Darkness expanding it's influence by rewriting the size of the 'lake' into something more globally accessible, or it could be something less literal written by Alan.

underrated post

The gameplay was interesting at first, but it got really tedious and repetitive after a while.

It made a strong case for never buying Energizer batteries ever again.

>tfw forgot to buy it on the last sale
>didn't even realize it would be gone forever

>friend bought it
>didn't tell me it would be gone forever
I'm still mad

no

Yeah, it's all due to the music rights licensing.

Yeah, that happened to me too.

I know why, but that's no help.

...

>buy it on humble bundle for a penny
>havent even played it yet

Does "licensing" apply to the products as well or is that something else? The Verizon thing I've kind of warmed up to in an ironic way but I can't think of any reason why things like SYNC and Energizer would be in the game

>Sonybros boycotting a game on a console they don't own
Wat

Also, Sonytards have totally eaten up ex-exclusives like Dead or Alive and Mass Effect so it wouldn't have made a difference anyway if AW ever made it to PS.
