Who was in the right here?
Who was in the right here?
Dreamcast, so I guess Xbox 260 as well
Sony as always.
There is a reason Sony has won every gen since the PS1.
...
xbox because i use an xbox controller
It was Nintendo's idea and their design so I guess it belongs to them.
Nobody. We should have never stopped using 6 face button controller schemes. Last good controller was the Saturn 3D Pad.
Why can't there be a regulatory institute for video games that determines the standard controller layout? Switching between consoles is painful
>Not the duke
gamecube for button placement and sony for the pictures because im autistic and get my letters confused.
Do you know where you are?
GameCube was way ahead of its time
>Big A button, typically you most used button right in the center for max comfort
>X/Y buttons forming a semicircle around the A button for easy to go to secondary actions
>Smaller B button for less frequent but equally important actions, usually a very potent game function
10/10 best button layout of all time, you're a fag if you disagree
As someone that loves both the Saturn and the Xbox, I think the Saturn's just feels so much more natural on my hands. That Enterprise-shape feels so natural, you just have to hold one to understand.
The Black/White buttons on Xbox games weren't use wisely. Game developers regarded them pretty much as Start/Return/Select buttons, not as face buttons.
xbox. green accept, red decline.
>Why can't there be a regulatory institute for video games that determines the standard controller layout?
You do realise that everyone just copies Nintendo right? Nintendo were the company who decided HOW we will interact with games and every single console for the past 25 years has taken their joypad design directly from Nintendo's SFC/SNES pad.
>Different shaped face buttons
This actually makes a lot of sense. Why isnt it a thing anymore?
This user gets it.
SNES > PS > GC > Xbox
what is the xbox360 and ps3
The Super Nintendo is forever king
Because all the buttons are supposed to be equal
All of those are wrong it should be:
Y
B X
A
Any controller has this layout?
Gamecube controller's idea was good, but I can't stand that controller, that idea needs to be re-done with a better pad.
No need to fight.
...
Out of my way symbollets
Sony because if they wanted to use the basic letters they would have confused people coming from Nintendo controllers or they would have had to copy them, instead they chose shapes and avoided both. You could make an argument for Nintendo because they were first but I don't like Nintendo.
The Nintendo and Sony Japan setup is correct
Microsoft and Sony America is wrong
GameCube is wrong
as dumb as it looked, gamecube controller was really great.
This. I just want a modernized GCN controller for PC use as well as Joycons/Pro Controller for the Switch.
...
Gamecube. as others have said the button placement is great.
agreed with that sony wins here because they're not even in the fight when it comes to lettering buttons, also agreed with that we never should have stopped using 6 button layouts
other than b i really love how close the buttons on the gamecube controller are its so easy to have them all under your thumb, i think if b was closer to x it would have been perfect
PS4 and Xbox one.
Great use of the Joycons.
>Player 1 cannot attack
>Player 2 cannot move
nigga dey all chinese
even xbox does not have the microsoft logo
>Xbox
>not Dreamcast
Fuck off with your rounded-ass buttons
The problem is that both changed something not to look like they blatantly stole it.
Now when you switch from one system to another you always mechanically press the wrong button when some confirmation pops up. This is extremelly infuriating.
says fucking who? A controller should be maximum comfort and the GC layout allows you to feel which button is which without even looking
Dumb liberal.
>1 analog and 4 buttons each
>cannot attack
>cannot move
not saying those are good buttons for it, but they would work
> x is confirm
> o is abort
I just want a single player focused pair of joycons with a real d pad, bigger buttons, bigger sticks, actual triggers and most importantly a diagonal placement for thumb sticks similar to Pro controller set up.
gamecube is my favourite too, but it's not going to come back because it looks like silly candy. Before I got a GC, I thought it was retarded and I hated it (i was like 10) and I didn't realize how nice it actually was until after GC was dead
>press o to confirm because japanese game
>localized anyways to use x to confirm
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
honestly, if you would spend moneyfor that just buy the pro controller. If they did launch a version of the switch that came with singleplayer only joycons it would confuse the fuck out of people
I already own the pro controller but handheld is comfier.
I don't mind because i don't own any 2d platformers on the switch, but it will bug me when I eventually get one. i do enjoy handheld
Sony
Geometry is universal, and their PSX controller is the superior non joystick controller ever made.
>game lets you switch which button is which in options
we truly live in modern times
The horizontal 6 button system is logical and there's a hierarchy to the buttons in terms of their reach.
Hence why Megadrive games quickly found the sweet spot of A= Special B=Attack C=Jump, while SNES games never settled on an ideal layout.
Buttons top 3:
PS3 (that pressure sensitivity tho)
GameCube
Xbox one/elite
Dpad top 3
Vita
Ps4
Xbox one elite
trigger top 3
Xbox 360
Xbox one elite
Xbox one
Sticks top 3
Xbox 360
Xbox one elite
Ps4
Wrong. Circle (1), Cross (2), Square (3), Triangle (4)
>PS3 winning anything or haveing anything for that matter
'No'
Except you want your two primary buttons to be in sequence so that your thumb rests on both at the same time, one with the tip and the other at the joint. That way you can hit both without moving your thumb
On the gamecube these two buttons were usually A and B, where in order to do that you had the rest the tip of your thumb between the two which isn't nearly as intuitive IMO. Like try playing the Mega Man games with the gamecube controller and you'll notice how much better it is to use the SNES's B/Y setup over the gamecube's A/B setup
it's wayyyyy easier to tell someone to press A, then "look for triangle and press that"
This. They keep trying to add new functionality with motion control or touch screen bullshit when having six face buttons is just sitting there.
The duke was honestly a really good controller, scorned by tiny manlets with microhands everywhere who didn't like being reminded that they are gollum-esque freaks of nature.
This is genuinely the best controller I've used in years
>it's wayyyyy easier to tell someone to press A
How? For someone that never used a controller before the game will say "Press A" and the fucker will have to look at the controller to know where the A button is, it's the same shit, the thing is, a triangle is a triangle anywhere, in a country where they don't use our alphabet A is just a random symbol.
>it's wayyyyy easier to tell someone to press Triangle, then "look for A and press that"
Wow, what a non-argument. Whats if your Chinese?
>"Ching chong ding dong wats a a botom?"
>Worst d-pad know to man
>Pointlessly gimped second stick
>Pointlessly gimped second shoulder button (z), without an equivalent left hand side
>Personal preference but I hate hate hate analog shoulder buttons
>While the idea behind the button shapes and sizes are novel, the diamond layout is objectively superior
I don't understand all of the love for the gamecube controller. Aside from being genuinely super comfortable to grip and gold, it's genuinely not very good
Best is the xbox, color-coded layout with normal left-to-right lettering. Snes' only flaw is being backwards. Good look pressing b+x or b+y on the GCN for Soul Calibur. Shapes are shit tier I hate the colors.
The fact that all of the buttons are differently shaped and sized makes it stupid simple to learn the button layout for first time users. Really cool idea.
>Having to use shapes for button labels because you have an illiterate low-IQ playerbase
Well we know which one was wrong at least.
Would be a great controller if not for those buttons and their placement.
A should always be the button your thumb rests on
Be honest Americans
sony, gamecube is good alternative but games need to be designed around the controller. snes is abomination and Xbox buttons feels weird.
I never owned a GameCube, I'm not a Smashfag, and I have zero nostalgia for the GameCube, but I have to agree that its button mapping is GOAT. Traditional SNES-derived diamond layout is totally fine and modern controllers are good, but when you look at the goddamned physiology of your hands, the GameCube face button layout makes the most sense, and you nailed exactly why.
I really want to find a portal to an alternate universe where the faggots at Sony decided to swap X/O functionality for Western audiences. Imagine how great things would be if that never happened, and then if Microsoft went on to follow suit and recreate the SNES layout on their controllers. We'd live in a wonderful world where even if nobody wanted to innovate and do crazy GameCube-tier shit, at least a.) all controllers would have the same general layout, b.) the "confirm" button would be universally in its rightful place ("on the right"), and c.) there'd be a lot less headache for everyone when porting games from Japan.
Why did they have to fuck it up?
>hurdurr Ameritards can't figure out "desaturated blue X means 'no' and desaturated red O means 'yes'"
Literally most retarded decision in the history of video games.
I like GC's because I'm a fucking idiot who can't remember which button is which on my 360 controllers
Doesn't help that I emulate a lot so I have to remember what buttons are mapped to what
I think gamecube's shoulder buttons where the most satisfying buttons i've ever pressed, i loved mashing them.
NIGGA THEY ALL CHINESE
do they still sell these? I bet that would make a good pc emulation controller.
The Saturn 3D controller shoulders are exactly the same. Most people will never hold one, but if you have the chance, try it out.
the dualshock was not a direct ripoff and instead a big improvement over the snes pad.
>playing Dreamcast games after experiencing the few Saturn games that use the 3D Pad
How could Sega fuck up this badly? The 3D Pad had the superior stick, DPad, buttons and was much more ergonomic. I still love the DC's library but god damn the controller is shit.
they're all fucking wrong
here's the only layout that makes sense
fuck the white and black buttons
those were the ones that got stuck the most
>diagonal d-pad
Okay, I giggled.
Single syllable button names will always be superior
So much love the Saturn controllers ITT. Excellent taste, brothers.
It was amazing how it worked for games that supported it. Compare playing Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2, when the second game worked with the analog stick. Or with Panzer Dragoon that supported both the diagonal and analog at once.
My last sentence I meant Panzer Dragoon Saga. Why by the way is single most underrated game I have ever played.
>ABC
babby controller for big babby
>All of them based off of the Super Nintendo pad
>Even Nintendo when back to the Super Nintendo layout
Nintendo is always right, you know this.
DS4 is my favorite controller yet (for ergonomics and the trackpad for use on PC), but pictoral buttons are pretty bad.
Sort of makes sense when you think about the original intent for the button scheme
Circle: primary action, 1-sided shape (and implies "confirm")
Cross: secondary action. 2 "sides" (implies "cancel")
Triangle: teriary, 3 sides
Square: quaternary, 4 sides
problem is, the cancel/confirm convention changed (but at least Circle is red), and the button names are awkward to say aloud; triangle & circle are more than one syllable so you can't say them as quickly. And everyone says X instead of Cross which makes it ambiguous for people used to xbox controllers, both in speech and with in-game prompts.
criminally underrated post
considering how you grip the controller, it makes sense actually
>PS3 winning anything
PS4 is nice for multplats but that's about it. It has what, two good exclusives in the past 4 and a half years?
Do you want a controller with numbers? Or perhaps greek letters are more to your tastes?
All Xbox controllers are descended from Dreamcast controller, which was based on the Saturn 3D, which was based on the Saturn standard, which was based on the 6 button Mega Drive.
Every controller we have today descends from either the SNES or Mega Drive controllers. The 16 bit console wars are still alive in that sense.
Xeriously Xnderrated
Too bad there's like one game a year that lets you do that.
Last I remember was A Tomato letting you rebind all the controls completely thank fuck, default controls sucked
where I'm from, we call circle ball since it has 2 syllables over circle's 3 in my native tongue
It's long overdue we got some more buttons on controllers. Contextual controls suck.
...
...
...
part of me wants this to be real
Vai dormir porra
Imagine a controller
Xbox One shaped with playstation Vita clicky buttons and godly D-Pad.
...
