I want to play a Final Fantasy game

>I want to play a Final Fantasy game.
>Well, sir, we have certified classics like VI, VII, and Tactics, and of course dark horse favorite ssuch as IX, VIII, IV, and III...
>I also want to feel an unearned sense of pretentious hipster superiority to other people while I play it.
>Ah, say no more.

V is the best Final Fantasy fuck you OP

What is Dragon Quest equivalent of FFIV in terms of overall quality?

>shitting on V because of some supposed hipster strawman

You're clearly retarded OP. II is the preferred hipster option. No need to shit on V. Also

>IV
>dark horse

Goddamn if you want to talk about the games you don't need to open with shitposting

5 is just a fun adventure with a cool job system it just always get overlooked.

Why do people shit on II so hard? Its not my favorite but its definitely not bad.

Because nobody played II

>having fun is now classified as being pretentious
video games are over

Because of the weird leveling system and the stupid level design, like empty rooms that have high encounter rates that you spawn in the middle of if you enter them.

jeffludwig.com/ff5a/download.php

This makes FFV a thousand times more fun, even if it does make it even easier to curbstomp everything in your path.

How do actually play old final fantasies properly? Run from every random encounter? Beat all of them?

Krile is a shit character that's only there to replace Galuf, who was a good character

People don't like the levelling system? That's easily my favorite part about it

How the hell

The levelling system is objectively shit.

If you liked it, go try out the SaGa games to see it done right.

The leveling system's the most infamous part. People, at best, recommend the remakes because they give a bit more leniency (though still keeps the mechanic) it seems.

>pretentious hipster superiority
That's so 2010 OP, you should have shopped a trollface on Boco while you're at it.

Don't try to run from encounters but don't really grind either, just take your time exploring the places and talking to the NPCs

>rpgsite.net/feature/6530-here-s-the-final-fantasy-series-ranked-as-voted-by-thousands-of-you
>even hardcore FFfags think FFV is garbage
Really makes you think.

hardcore fan of anything is first person whose opinion is to be ignored

HUH

Saga's level system is pretty weird too. They also punish you for grinding

It's not like anybody except for the hardcore gives a fuck about old games.

The system itself is great, but II is overly crude and unrefined in that aspect.

FUCK

How so? I've never played.

>XV that high
>all the older ones at the bottom

I think ww can safely conclude most FFfags in this day and age are youngfags that haven't really been exposed to anything older than VII

I have yet to play V, but I want to because I liked all the artwork I'd seen related to it, and it seems like the most generic jrpg out of all the FFgames

Is dual wield-spellblade-barrage possible in freelancer or only mimic?

Battle Rank. If you spend too much time grinding, the enemies will begin to outclass you, since they get stronger no matter what kind of battles you get into. Its not like FF where you can find a spot where enemies give a lot of EXP/AP/JP and grind until you're ready to move on.

Why do people hate the FF2 leveling again? I know it's pretty simplistic and grind-intensive, but it's no licensing system, and it's definitely no junctioning system.

Then how do you explain VI being that high and XIII that low?

I like the idea of punishing grinding, but that seems a tad too harsh. Am I right in assuming that?

IV belongs to be in the same category as VII. For the generation before, it had a similar reputation

Its not harsh if you play smart. And the only time it seems unfair is in Romancing SaGa 2, where Battle Rank increases even if you run from battles.

Well, the more you grind, the more powerful enemies get. They become a nightmare to deal with. You don't get new abilities by leveling up, you need to use your weapon a certain number of times against powetful until you get lucky and "spark". It's literally rng. You getting better abilities depends on your luck

>XI and V that low

Anything other than VII is hipster, saying VII ruined the series and that VI was the best is hipster supreme.

I figure it's not a problem for most people; I can just imagine being a more casual player or a little kid or something and getting miffed over something like that. That second part sounds dumb as hell, though.

FF8 is legitimately SHIT. As some one who completed it 100% a month ago GOT EVERY SINGLE FUCKING CARD DID EVERY SINGLE SIDE QUEST I can say without a fucking doubt it is the definition of lost potential

Its so easy to become overpowered or underpowered there is no middle ground. Also fuck the magic system draw would have been fine if they atleast didn't punish you for using magic.

V is only highly overrated on Sup Forums. Its class system is the only improvement from its predecessor

'breaking' a JRPG is the correct way to play it user. Its just easier to setup in FF8

It's just a nice fun game and the scene where Galuf sacrificed himself and kept tanking hits past 0 hp made me shed a manly tear. Plus, the music is good. Tenderness In The Air is comfy as hell, Ahead On Our Way is an amazing game theme, and of course there's Battle on Big Bridge.

IX it is!

it is one of my favorites, and had a lot of excellent high points. It just lacked something special to me. Cecil facing down his reflection or Terra no longer fearing herself. Bartz never really had a moment like that

VI is a game everyone says is good, even if they haven't played it. They hear it's just like 7 only older, and think "wow, it must be one of the best FFs ever.". VIII is a game everyone says is bad, because again, they hear things about it and instantly think "it must be bad". The list is mostly meme answers. 6 and 7 are the best, 1 through 3 are the worst, 8 is terrible. Every thread is the same, and these idiots sre just parroting every discussion. Sort of like how no one here has a mind of their own and automatically think Tacticsis better than V.

I love Dragon Quest. I want to experience Final Fantasy but should I go from I-XV or just play fan favourites? Don't worry about me being put off by bad entries because I'll go all the way to XV but if it isn't worth its time then what should I play first? Preferably something I-VI first so I can emulate it on my 3DS.

I feel like V was just meant to be a break from the epic-styled stories of IV and VI. Basically, the comic relief of the SNES era.

youtube.com/watch?v=2RSQm8--6rQ

Wow, who gets every card before they decide whether or not FF8 is trash? That's time you could've spent playing a video game that's actually good. I just did the minimum grinding to get the ultimate weapon on disc one and a little Doomtrain on the side., and even that took longer than playing Dirge of Cerberus front-to-back, cutscenes included (which is still a better game than FF8, mind you).

People forget that character driven melodrama wasn't always a staple of the series. Somewhat unfortunately, VI. VII, and VIII cemented that idea.

Worst* fixed that for you

I think this really worked in the games favour. Story never outstayed its welcome either, whereas every FF from 4 onwards except 5 has me mashing the continue-text button on a few occasions.

If I had to choose between character-driven melodrama and boring, generic fantasy fodder like I, II, III, and V (and IV to a lesser extent), I would choose the former. I still enjoyed playing V, though. Dat job system.

VIII ranked 6th out of 15, so most people clearly didn't think it was trash. The so-called classics like IV and V plus XII all ranked lower.

I'm currently playing the SNES version of V. I'm near the end of the second world but the game feels like a chore now because of the high encounter rates, big group of enemies any fight and I can't see any sense of progression on my party, they level so slow and every time they do it's like a tiny increment in stats I just end up spamming Titan every fight and be done with it.
What am I doing wrong?

People just really love grinding so they abuse an oversight.

That might be true if this was the early 1990s.

But sadly the phone ports (and the dipshits who gloat about on Tumblr) ruined this game for many.

Why would you shit on FF5? What's the problem with it? Not too complex story for you? So you hate Gilgamesh and Exdeath? I mean what's not to like about pic related?
The class system is pretty good, too. There is also a sense of adventure. It certainly show that it's an FF game.

>using summons for fodder
>using summons at all

What are your jobs? You'll get a much worse experience if your roster is shit.

This, the people who didn't understand how the gameplay mechanics bitched about the leveling system (but somehow it's ok in Elder Scrolls games).

Is the GBA version of FF5 the best?

I mean I don't have a problem with character-driven/story heavy jrpgs. It just irks me when people act like Final Fantasy has ALWAYS been that way, or that its required for the games to be good and that any lightheartedness should be shunned. Even VII and VIII had their fair share of goofy moments that added levity between the melodrama.

Objectively, yes.

>Fuck you, I'm a twig.

Yeah nah kill yourself, nigga. V is fun as fuck.

>IV
>dark horse

If anything it's the most overrated of the "classic" FFs.

Are there any jobs you feel like they missed in FFV? It seemed like a pretty comprehensive list. I could've gone for another stab at vikings after FF3 fucked it up so hard.

Bartz - Samurai
Lenna - Time Mage !White Magic
Galuf - Summoner !Geomancy
Faris - Dragoon

Please tell me how can I make this more enjoyable, I really wanna finish this game.

Speaking of goofy shit, am I the only one who laughed hard at the Cup Noodle quest in XV? It literally has you battle a giant lobster for the sake of adding prawns to a pot noodle.

>Punished for grinding

Holy shit, you have got to be kidding me. Try playing The Last Remnant, you will think differently about this game.

You have to be extremely retarded to grind yourself into a corner in Saga games, even then they give you the option to do NG+ at anytime (newer ports do anyway).

All monks all the time, motherfucker.

What do you mean, it is a huge dark horse, it with every single remake and after story content. They would never do such things if FFIV was actually popular.

Full disclosure, when I started the final fantasy series. I binge bought anything and everything connected to FF. Then started trucking from the beginning. I got to 7 and then dropped it. Still haven't picked it back up after all these years. I did however break the chain to play FFXV. Huge mistake.

Faris is cute

The Romancing SaGa 2 remaster is the only SaGa game that I've seen New Game +.

VI is the most overrated

Its a toss up between the two, really.

Yes, I just played through the Steam version last year and it made my eyes fucking bleed (we giants now). Whoever redid the sprites needs to put their teeth on a fucking curb.

>tfw currently working my way through III

As far as old school RPGs go, it's great, but a lot of the jobs are fucking useless. Also, fuck Petits and all of their variants.

>We were kung fu fighting!

V was good but Tactics was objectively better.

>It literally has you battle a giant lobster for the sake of adding prawns to a pot noodle.

you got a lobster boss? I had to fight a behemoth

III's system is wonky, but it works a lot better if you settle on fixed classes for each character. Think of it more as an extension of I, rather than a prototype of V.

Depends on your choice. I'm a seafood fag so I chose prawns. Did not regret my decision.

That's assuming the user is playing the remake, which changed around the job system.

I just red maged everyone in my party (2 offense casters, healer/dual sword and buff/dual sword) on FFIII and basically it broke the game about half way through.

Well worth it since the PC version is fucking garbage.

You have not encountered true sadness until you've played the viking. The only Final Fantasy with vikings, and they dropped the ball harder than space dropped that meteor on those dinosaurs. Woefully exclusive equipment pool that dries up before you even make it to the final dungeon and a provoke technique that misses. How does a taunt fucking miss? Drawing aggro to a single character is already a risky venture, and it doesn't even work reliably? For FUCK'S sake.

The GBA version with the patched colours and music is the best

NES version. I've just unlocked the fire crystal jobs. Currently working with a Knight, a Black Mage, a Monk and a Red Mage.

>Depends on your choice. I'm a seafood fag so I chose prawns. Did not regret my decision.

I didn't even get a choice. I saw the event and went to a tipster and then the game said "FIGHT BOSS HERE"

on the other side of the map

Wait, are we talking about the same thing here? Gladio gets a hankering for some extra special Cup Noodles then you have to choose a preferred ingredient. Once that was done, I had to challenge a boss.

Ah. The remakes changed the job system entirely. In that version each job has its own job level that defines its stats, effectiveness of abilities and whatnot. It also determines the length of the "Job Adjustment" phase (the higher the difference, the longer you wait) hence the building characters around specific jobs being recommended.
On the flipside, while it nerfed some of the better NES jobs, it buffed the more useless ones and gave them special abilities.

maybe I had a choice, I honestly forget.

The whole opening of the quest felt like a fucking advertisement

That's part of why I found it so funny. The whole thing was goofy as fuck.

What's the point of a class change system if you aren't able to synergize or make cool builds? At that point it's just fucking lazy.

Is that because it was? This is the current face of Final Fantasy, folks: Cup Noodles, mobile shovelware, and hipster covers of Stand By Me.

From 6 and on it's actually possible to beat with only killing the bosses and every generic enemies are just for loots
From 5 and lower you need to grind

It was the NES/Famicom era. They were still experimenting with the ideas (see Final Fantasy II)

>mobile shovelware

speaking of that, how is Record Keeper?

I got overwhelmed by the gacha shit in Exivus and Mobius kinda drug on after chapter 2

All I'm saying is Final Fantasy 1 legit did classes better than 3.

You just hit the nail on the head, my friend. As someone who played FFV first, III was a crushing disappointment. I figured it would be a little more unpolished since it came first, but good lord is that system unfun. I mean, c'mon. Really? Adjustment periods? Dead end jobs? Weird sequel jobs where it doesn't make sense how the stats carry over at all? Luneth was all over the place the whole game, but every time I got a new round of jobs, there was always at least one fighter class waiting for Ingus, so he completely outstripped every other character in pretty much all fields before the game was even halfway done.
