Kiwami is the bastardized version of 1. Sadly, the director decided to emulate most of 1 (it's a bad game) and so the overall quality is low.

Zero, it’s quite possibly the most all-around solid entry in the series.

Emulation user. You can emulate Y1 and Y2.
From there you can bite the bullet and get a PS3, or wait until the PS3 games get ported to Ps4

I started with Kiwami and everything seems fine.

Ignore those who tell you to emulate Y1, it has a terrible flanderized localization.
All other games and versions are fine tho.

Even though I loved Yakuza 1 when I first played it, I sadly have to agree with you.

Also OP, don't be afraid to pick up Kiwami, playing through the first yakuza game on ps2 made me realize that the controls arn't as refined and polished as the later series, and its kinda hard to go back to when you played through the later titles.

5 is the absolute worst to start with though. Literally any other one is better to start with. If you're going to play 5, you should at least have played 4.

It's kinda like Automata in the sense that you don't need to play the other titles in the series to enjoy it, but you miss out on some cool references and some scenes lose their impact if you haven't.

Fuck what the elitists say! Start with Ishin, quit halfway through then boot up Yakuza 3 and play that from start to finish in 1 sitting. Watch the Portable Ops cutscenes on Youtube and you'll be all caught up for Ichiban's game.
Little extra thing you could do is play the NBA 2k17 story mode to get more background information on the characters in Ichiban's game, it's not really neccessary though.

ive played both. kiwami is great. its just people trying to be oldfags. back when it was coming out they even edited screenshots to make it look like censorship was happening where it never did (like photoshopping characters out of screenshots of cutscenes and going "HUR SEE THEY RUINED DA GAME"

Kiwami is a spinoff that stars Koryu Kozumo and it takes place in Hong Kong. Play it after you've played all the others.

Op, just choose if you want to emulate 2 old games that have aged like milk, then get a PS3 along with the the next 3 installments or have a fresh game right out of the bat.

You don't have to play the first ones in order to understand 0 but it gives a couple of laughs here and there.

Kiwami 1 is literally Yak 1 with better gameplay and an (inferior) ost remix and some Memejimaing that you’ll hardly notice if you don’t rush the main quest. (they lock his appearances behind story progression)

They’re bitching about Kiwami 2 too but desu I doubt any of them have even played it.

Because you have to play 5 entire games to get to the one that's relatively new, and if you don't have a PS3 your options amount to:
1. Play Kiwami 1, wait for 2, and hope they release 3/4/5 in a bundle for PS4.
2. Emulate 1/2 and buy a PS3 to play 3/4/5.
3. Say fuck it and just play 0.

Did I say anything about not understand stories? I said references. Is like playing Sonic Mania without playing any of the classics, which you will miss the neat references to previous games and getting "oh shit" moments like "I remember THAT guy" or "this".
