Was the hate towards new Dante really justified? Yeah, in the beginning he acts like an entitled little shit a bit (Dante in DMC3 was pretty snotty at times too, though in a sillier way), but given his upbringing, it's not surprising really. His rediscovery of his parents' fates and his interaction with Phineas shows character development, and by the end of it, he wants to keep Kat safe, finds Vergil's actions shocking, and he chooses to protect the freedom of humanity against his brother's desire to rule.

So go make that character in your own game instead of bastardising one that people already liked.
>Dante in DMC3 was pretty snotty at times too
He was also the worst incarnation of the character, Donte doesn't count. 1 & 4 were the best.
Capcom gave it to NT though. They were completely free to write their own versions of the characters. NT did nothing wrong.
Was the hate towards new Dante really justified?
Yes, that's why this shit reboot is canned and forgotten.
>Was the hate towards new Dante really justified?
fuck you
Lol, don't pretend they weren't both at fault here.
Yes; his game was shit.
>4
Oh you mean the middle age crisis Dante who acts like himself from 3 while being an adult in 1? Also wearing those lame ass cowboy pants.
Not him but yes, the fun and likable Dante.
>3 is worst for being fun young dude
>somehow it's acceptable in 4.
He's definitely not my favorite, but he's the second best and more tolerable than 3. 3 Dante just ruined the character entirely. 1 is the best overall, along with Anime Dante. Fags won't like those because they're not CUHRAYZEEE enough for them.
Yes, it's like they took all the worst qualities of the emo scene and amped them up, at no point does he become a tolerable character.
>Sup Forums is so retarded they see a 30 year old demi-god cracking jokes as someone who is going through a mid-life crisis
Jesus christ
This game was awesome but holy shit I just realized how jarring those two models look. It looks like a real pro made the Dante model and maybe even had his face scanned in while kat looks like a shitty pozer/daz model made by a college student.
except for making a game that's not DMC, nor has any relation to the franchise save in name only. if it went with any other name, and the combat system was NT claiming to give a shout out to the DMC series, people wouldn't be as critical to judge it.
except Dante being a cocky, smacktalking, over the top dork is what made him likable among fans. his design was never to be taken seriously. the series itself was born from a scrapped RE4 idea, so he's basically a bastardized Leon Kennedy. a more serious take on Dante as with DMC2 & DmC never worked. DMC1 Dante was still cocky, despite the gloomy demeanor
The fact that he's a "nephilim" and has zero humanity COMPLETELY misses the point of Dante's character. Calling him "Donte" is 100% appropriate because he has zero resemblance to the actual Dante.
Capcom is at fault to be sure but NT could have easily made a game that was more faithful to the series' themes and characterization. Instead they openly mocked DMC and replaced it with bigger dicks and sniper abortions.
Again, not him.
I like 3's Dante for that exact reason, the only thing I have a gripe with is his visual design.
The difference is Dante in 3 has matured into who we see in 1 and 4, DmC Donte does not grow as a character.
Oh come on, DmC deviated from the series significantly but no relation to it save in name is just retardedly hyperbolic. They take a ton of cues from all 4 games and reuse things, just in their own way.
Giving Dante a white shard of hair after first using devil trigger was a nice touch too. Surprised they never did something like that in previous games. Or am I just forgetting?
It's better in espanol
It's more like they rip off plot elements from all 4 games because they're hacks. But in terms of the actual themes and characterization they bear no meaningful resemblance.
Rename like five-ten characters and suddenly DmC is its own game not immediately compared to a series better in every objective way.
Doesn't fix the shithouse combat though.
Original DMC Dante is best Dante, but he's still a shitlord.
His hair already was white in the original series, when he gained DT for the first time in 3 Rebellion fully awakened which was symbolic for his potential being unlocked, the whole event was done far, far better than in DmC and carried weight all the way up to the end.
...
>sfx violin strikes
¿Como dices?
No, they used elements from previous titles because it was still a Devil May Cry they were making, and they couldn't stray too far off course, but they wanted it to be their own thing too. Things have new meanings now.
yes
¡JÓDASE USTED SEÑOR!
SEÑOR
SOMBRERO
SALSERO
Yeah. They took a character that people liked and repurposed him into a total cunt. I would have liked to sit in during those design meetings and just question all their decisions
>Okay and here we're gong to have him talking to a succubus, the conversation will go along the lines of "I'M YOUR PROM DATE YOU UGLY SCK OF SHIT" "FUCK YOU" "NO FUCK YOU" "FUCK YOU BLEEGGHHH"
Why did they write him to be such an unlikable character? Why didn't they write out witty dialogue?
>WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?
>Oh darling, you don't remember? Prom night 1988? The night we made love? You were so beautiful then. The years have been so kind to you.
but he literally does you illiterate tard. why do you get so upset over this.
Tú debes de ser el ingrediente secreto.
¡QUE TE JODAN!
>Was the hate towards new Dante really justified?
Yes. He started out as rebellious angsty ow-the-edge teenager #542 with absolutely NOTHING interesting about him at all, and is such a bland stereotype of every single edgy smoker teenager who flips off the teacher in class that gets the shit beaten out of him daily by everyone from the football team to the chess club that he's a worthless character. Partway through he suddenly discovers lame one liners like "Fuck you!" and starts asking questions because it's obvious he has no fucking clue what's going on around him even though everyone has been carefully explaining everything to him from the very first 5 minutes. It ends with him THEN turning stereotype good guy for very little reason outside squirrel semen and pussy. Each transition is both jarring and nonsensical.
Of course, the entire story is not only nonsensical and so full of holes you could drive a demon realm through it, but it goes back on itself MULTIPLE TIMES. This has been discussed to death, as well as the graphical and actual gameplay issues (from AI to game structure to fighting and all points between & beyond).
tl;dr

At no point does Donte ever have a critical character moment like Dante did whenever he encountered Vergil, Vergil in 3 was Dantes foil and the two grew off each other. Donte goes along with the motions and never questions why they're doing anything, the DE half assed an attempt at him arguing with Vorgil over the sniper abortion but that's about as far as it goes.
4 and a half minutes in and no actual points made, stupid "sins" added just because the guy doesn't like something, and by the way the first DMC didn't have a formal lock on feature either (definitive edition fixes this too). Should I keep watching? Obviously not.
Some things you say have truth to them, but at the same time, you're saying about as much as the guy in the video, which is nothing solid at all. And you're hyperbolizing. That right there tells me you don't have much of an argument
>first DMC didn't have a formal lock on feature either
Kek
>and by the way the first DMC didn't have a formal lock on feature
DmCfags everyone.
¡Escucha!
He locked on to the nearest enemy and you couldn't easily switch.
BIGGER
I love Kat!
Yes and? There's still a lock on mechanic.
>no actual points made, stupid "sins" added just because the guy doesn't like something
Welcome to CinemaShits.
¡Kat me salvó la vida! Acceptó ser torturada para que tu existencia quedara oculta. Nos guió por la torre hasta la guarida de Mundus.
Yes. Literally the only answer. Just like FFXIII, all the hate they get is 100% justified.
That's not a formal lock on, certainly not what any normal person would consider a formal lock on at least. And iirc vanilla DmC has the auto version just like it.
All I remember about the advertisement and shit about DmC is that Kat used squirrel spunk to perform magic and you could get SSS rating by pressing A with the gloves three times. And you had infinite axe magic or something.
He would've been fine if his name wasn't Dante and the game wasn't called Devil may Cry
*WUB*
That's still a lock on fag
>not a formal lock on,
It locks you on to an enemy directing your attacks and the camera at them when you hold the button down
>vanilla DmC has the auto version just like it
DMC1 does not have any sort of auto lock on. You can't even fire a weapon without holding the lock on button which fucking locks on
DmC attempts to point your attacks towards an enemy and makes it so Dante shoots at enemies weak to guns, there's no way to direct the camera at an enemy or guarantee that he'll direct stinger/drive/the shitty ass axe ground wave at a specific enemy
No tienes ni idea del coas que causarán los humanos. Si no quieres 'aceptar la responsabilidad de protegerlos, mantente al margen.
K, so I forget exactly how the first game worked. I just remember thinking that the feature and the camera got easier to use over time in the series.
The rest of what I said about that shit video is true.
Meh, I’m with you, OP. DmC was a good game and I didn’t mind NT’s take on the character. They still retained the “cuhrayzee” of DMC but it’s decidedly not Japanese “cuhrayzee” and maybe that’s why the diehards couldn’t enjoy it? It’s not like the game retcons all the previous games, it’s just its own weird, gaiden-esque thing. imo the DMC series before it was given to NT had exactly 1 and a half actually good games and the rest were kind of shit. DmC actually manages to be fun to play, I mean fuck even the hackneyed platforming was better than anything similar attempted in the previous games. Tameem is a fat douche, no doubt, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy his game. It’s a bummer all the ree’ing DMC fanboys killed any chance of Capcom letting NT make a follow-up as the end of their game set up some interesting shit.
Eeehhhhh.....
Yes and no.
Yes because he was that awful but no because there have been worse characters around who didn't get anywhere near the same hate. I really can't stand the guy but at the same time I can see that the hate was a bit over the top but truth be told I love to hate on this motherfucker.
the combat is extremely reminiscent of dmc4 with a heavy emphasis on air combos, grappling hook and cinematic special attacks
they retain jump cancelling, gun juggling, pause combos, parrying via melee attacks, enemies having a weakness to certain weapons
but 1, 3 and 4 have depth surrounding these mechanics so that they're multi-faceted and you're always pushed to improve your playstyle by digging deeper
DmC makes everything painfully straightforward so that the first thing you discover is basically always the best. like how you can air combo an enemy forever by knocking him around with basic attacks and then using the grappling hook, or how prop shredder has a fuck huge hit box and ten jillion active frames so it's always what you use to parry, or using the fucking blue weapon on the blue enemies
bump
You know what my favorite part of Devil May Cry has always been? Social and political allegories.
DMC1 is my favorite in the series, but I can't help but think how much better it would be if I could Bill O' Reilly and the banks that rule the world. Other than that, it's the best in the series.
I recently rewatched the original trailer for this and was just extremely let down by the missed potential.

One of the top comments really reflects how I feel about it as well.
>There is such a disconnect between this trailer and what Ninja Theory gave us. The characters are completely different. This Dante is more quiet, unstable, but has somewhat of a charming sense of rebellion to him. The other Dante just seemed mean spirited (other being the one in the reboot). You can even hear it in the music as this music has a large sense of punk rock to it, while the other was more focused around dubstep. I don't mind dubstep, but I would have preferred to see how they would have taken this. I would not have minded seeing this character in another game, or even as Dante's son or something.
If they kept this strong, silent, punk rock rebel type in the final game and revolved it around different elements, like fuck I dunno, making him a demon-made clone of Dante who rebels and fights back against his captors (that WHATISYOURNAME part would have actually made sense!) and maybe even eventually meets the real Dante, it could have been a much better game. I just literally thought that up and it sounds 10x better than the story we got. They could have went for that dark, edgy overtone the 1st 2 games had while doing their own spin on the DMC Lore.
Fuck man, why is NT retardo.
Capcom told NT they had to rework his design, so they probably took that as changing the vibe of the game too. It may have also threw their development planning off key a bit. I'm not sure what to think about that version but I'd be interested to see how it would have turned out.
I will literally never forgive them for this no matter how hilarious it was
the brokeback mountain one made me laugh my sides into the stratosphere while also making me madder than howard beale
>They could have went for that dark, edgy overtone the 1st 2 games had
Nigga what.
Mate, you can't disregard that DMC 1 & 2 both had a dark tone compared to DMC 3 & 4.
2 sure. 1 had a dark gothic atmosphere going for it, but doesn't take itself seriously and was all balanced out by the early-RE levels of cheesy as fuck dialogue. The word edgy certainly isn't what comes to mind.
