>gaming laptop

Even if there were games you wanted to play, you would have still fucked up.

I've been considering dropping the shekels for a gaming gaming laptop, because I don't like carrying my desktop into work every night (which has an amd a10, okay for graphic design, but i occasionally want to appreciate some modern games).

If you won't use it can I have it? I wouldn't mind being able to play some post 2012 games

That's why I got the gs40. Had the 970 and was lightweight and small.

More like Gay laptop OP

Send it to me as a gift. I'll pay shipping charges.

>tfw gaming laptop
>tfw less than 10 pounds
>tfw only an inch thick
>tfw the fan does come on and you can't hear it unless the room is dead silent and even then it sounds like a soft white noise machine
I don't regret a thing.

Desktops are not a valid option for students.

post laptop user

why did you buy it then?

I did the same back at Uni.
Legit was painful how heavy my old laptop was, had to ludge that thing with books every day.

Get a cheap chromebook just so you can take notes or whatever.

>bought cheap hp elitebook for taking note
>thin, light, long battery life
>keyboard is shit
>bring my keyboard with blue switches and bottom out every keystroke
It's a nice laptop

>>bought 1400 dollar gayming laptop

unless you're unironically using said laptop as a cooking platform

got a decent gaming laptop at ebay for $450.only real issue is the HDMI port

...

Your parents payed a fortune for that thing you faggot. Now enjoy it.

They are but, only if you manipulate the administration to get a single room in the dorms. Ask an associate professor about that. They already know they're not getting tenure so they're probably tell you what you want to know.

Since the ram and gpu prices went up lately is isnt that bad. I've seen lots of laptops with an i5 or even an i7 + 1050 for 600$. You still have to be careful with the chassis design, but if you spend an hour looking at pages like notebookcheck and such you can choose a good one easily.

people in this thread that dont even know a thing about the current state of gaming laptops having an opinion on them LMAO

you autists don't understand that gaming laptops are fucking great now me and my sister have both been using them our entire lives.
when we want to upgrade we just sell our current one and use the money to help buy the new one current I have (pic related laptop) and its super light, makes no noise and I can run any game I want.

>didn't buy the GS63VR with SSD 1080p display, 16gb of RAM and a 1060
Fucking why?

Are you me?

I bought a gaming laptop but I can never unplug the thing lest I lose 25% power while IT’S ASLEEP.

Desktop PC > Console > Gaymen Lapturd

>playing games on a desktop

Lmfao check out this nerd

>i7 + 1050 for 600
yup theyre that cheap now, cant play with your desktop in bed

>600$

Where pls? I live in the middle of fucking nowhere ( Macedonia ) and im thinking about a lenovo i7 with gtx 1060 but the price here is 1200$.

Those aren't comparable categories. The desktop isn't portable, it has a full installation that is largely static. It is modular, the OS, software, and hardware are easily interchangeable.

The console is more portable but doesn't have a screen and has numerous accoutrements that are bulky and unwieldy. You have the power brick, controller, HDMI cable and the USB controller cable or batteries. You may just have to use legacy cords for display output as well, depending on the shithole you're staying at, meaning you may be SOL.

The laptop is semi-modular, allowing you to use a variety of software for your immediate needs. It comes paired with a display. The only actual peripheral necessary is its small power brick. Pair it with a controller or a mouse depending on your intentions and workload.

that thing weighs a fucking ton. Barely portable.

trade it in for one of these obviously

>i7 with gtx 1060
Acer helios 300 is $1k.

Why do all gaming laptops have to look like "gaming" laptops. Like are there any simple good looking gaming laptops. The only one I can think of is the XPS 15 that has a gtx 1050.

If you want to do some real nigga shit and money isn't a huge object, buy an ultrabook with a Thunderbolt 3 connector and use an external GPU rig
Laptop -> eGPU -> monitor(s)
I think you can still use an eGPU's output on the internal display but there is a performance loss

I got an ROG gayman laptop in 2013 for 1k and it's still chugging along, had to replace the battery and upgrade to an SSD but it's nice when you're away from the house and want to do a Lan party with friends or just going on long trips. Even though now I have a home setup with a 1080ti I think the laptop was a good investment.

Also God damn, the new ROG design is terrible, the earlier ones were all matte rubber with a nice look and now they're all red plastic gaymuuur crap

This isnt 2008. Video cards in laptops are good now.

Laptops are for normies.

>year of our lord 2018
>Sup Forums is so outdated they dont know laptop gpus are just 5% less performance than desktop equivalents making them viable

get with the times grandpa, nowadays especially with the retarded gpu prices due to crypto mining, it's worth owning one

Just be wary of AMD mobile gpus, they have a bad reputation of dying young.
They're the main reason why Dell/Alienware got such a bad reputation, 99% of their faults is a dead GPU.

I got an i5 + 1060 with a 120hz G-Sync screen for just under £900 in the black friday sales.

I haven't encountered a game that it struggles with on high/ultra yet, pretty much everything is at least 60fps. My desktop still beats it on performance/price but for a laptop I can't complain.

Might have beaten it price performance when you bought it, but if you check your you prices now, you might be surprised

Thanks :^)

Yeah you're right, the screen alone is worth quite a bit due to the g-sync technology. The monitors start at around £300

Didn't any of you guys hear of the GeForce MX150?

Cheap, thin and light 13 inch laptops can run all of the vidya now, gaming laptops are fucking ded

The performance drop was never the issue (although good luck finding a laptop with a top of the line card). The issue is and always will be overheating. The best gpu in the world means fuck all if it overheats near instantly.

I use this, got it cheap in the sales.
store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=2HQ93EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB

>GTX1060
>i5 (you can get the i7 model if you want more futureproofing but the i5 is honestly enough)
>backlit GAYMAN keyboard
>G-Sync screen
>easy to open it up to swap out the hard drive or ram, only a few screws

The only downside for me is the battery life, it's pretty shit but you'll have it plugged anyway if you're playing games.

I'm mostly talking about the retarded you prices that is making a gaming laptop very well worth the money

The 6gb 1060 is about half the money of a decent laptop, just the gpu

Any opinions on this chunky-ass ayylmaoware 15"?
Graphics cards for desktops have dried up where I am (and were horribly overpriced to start with anyway, whatever dregs are left are beyond ripoff).

Shoulda read all the reviews first. These fucking things typically won't last more than a year because of the GPU shitting out.

But they don't overheat though.

They run how yeah, but don't overheat enough to throttle.

I have a 4.9 pounds thin laptop (fx502) and temps are never an issue that it throttles performance

You never goes beyond 80c on games that push it, and cpu max so far is 87, it starts throttling at 100c

If you can relate it, it's go lower, and my laptop is thin, the bigger, heavier ones probably do an even better job

>buying a used thinkpad instead

Don't get alienware. They're overpriced even for gaming laptops.

>relate it
repaste *

Yeah, I'd always heard that.
What's the least shittiest option below them? I have always avoided brands like acer et al., mainly due to experiences others have shared. Since it's been like over a decade since I last looked at this shit I had hoped that things would be different now.

Acer?
Asus?
Lenovo?
MSI?

Basically, is there anything I can just outright avoid, much as Alienware can be ruled out for being a ripoff, can anything else be ruled out because it's just plain crap?

Well lad they all still have a pretty iffy quality control, so getting a bad lemon is possible on all brands

For built quality I'd recommend Lenovo, MSI and ASUS. Anecdotal so take it for what's worth, I have a 2013 MSI that was built like a damn tank, so works.

Watch for reviews on each model to see what's up.

Asus, Lenovo and MSI have made the best gaming tier laptops in the past decade. As in, the best price:performance.

I remember a few years ago, stuff like Lenovo y510p would go for literal 700 bucks almost during the launch, and pack an Intel i5 or i7 CPU, either GTX 750M , TWO GTX 750Ms, GTX 755M or GTX 760M GPU, and 8-16GB of RAM.

I personally just let go of my ~2010 era Asus G60VX by selling it for just hair under 200 bucks. It still served me well, though it's DX10 only GTX 260M started to show its age, namely by restricting my gaming choices with some latest titles.

Are there any laptops that come with 144hz?

Am I the only one that thinks gaming laptops look fucking hideous. Like do the companies making them still think people want their laptops look like fucking alien technology? Why isn't there a single simple thin gaming laptop? The closest I can think of being acceptable is Inspiration 15 7000.

razer blades are pretty thin, but they cost a fortune because of it.

Thanks for pointers, anons. A few datapoints/anecdotes better than nothing to get me headed in the right direction. I'll check out MSI and Asus. My current (non gaming) asus has somehow managed to last longer than every other laptop I've ever had, far beyond expectations. It turns off when it gets too hot or it suffers some kind of power kernal panic, but somehow the motherboard has lasted longer than the usual 3 or so years.

One thing Alienware had going for it where I am is that the keys aren't covered in supplementary moonrunes dammit.

I don't know about 144, but many high end laptops have 120hz screens nowadays

Yep, using this in public would be social suicide.

Unfortunately most gaming laptops look like a part that has been blown off a spaceship.

The Razer Blade is aesthetic as fuck, it looks like a black macbook but it also carries a really high price too.

>buying a gaming laptop for university

you massive fucking retard

Please recommend me a good laptop. I live in Euroland so my choices are limited. I've been looking at the xps 13 and 15. Something with a similar design would be nice.

But is a thin laptop like that really enough for games? It smells of integrated graphics.

I use mine in bed every night since I have a young son and have to keep an eye on him as he sleeps.

For the cooling issue I use a cooling fan that also provides support.

Only real downside is that my aim isn't as good when I'm lying down

>Not waiting 2 more years for components to be so efficient that they run at a Comfy 48C under load

If you don't mind compromising a bit, you can lower gpu and cpu usage by limiting the framerate. My laptop has a 1070, which runs all games at 100+ fps. By capping the framerate to 60, the gpu/cpu load and temps go down drastically.

This is what I do. My laptop can run Overwatch at a locked 120fps on ultra but I still cap it at 60 because 120 makes the fans go crazy but 60 keeps it quiet

I don't mind the idea of a laptop, but I just don't find the position of the screen comfortable for prolonged use. I like my display higher up and a bit further away, not glued down there to the keyboard.

All this comments about desktop being superior.
Meanwhile Deadmau5 is snipping the face of Twich while he streams from Red Lobster on his $3500 gaming laptop.

You realize gaming laptops aren't dogshit anymore right? NVIDIA mobile cards have barely any performance difference from their desktop counterpart, the 1050 especially has exactly the same performance.
Designs aren't awful muh gaymen shit anymore, they're more subtle now.
The only shitty thing is the CPUs aren't that good still, but they do the job.

There's still the issue of price and longevity. And the fact that you're paying for a 17''screen in the time when desktop users go for 27'' minimum.

>tfw went from console gamer to this laptop
I love it. I was told gaming laptops were shit but my omen is still going strong. I only regret not getting the i7+1060 one but I'm still surprised at how many games I can max out and get 60fps with the 1050.
Sure it's overpriced for what it is, but if you travel a lot it's a godsend.

>can get desktop grade graphics on laptops with any card now except the 1080ti
>intel still cant get their shit together and mobile chips are gimped compared to their desktop counterpart
shaking my head

with how ddr4 and gpu prices are, gaming laptops arent really that much more expensive anymore

>8gb ram

no thanks

>>intel still cant get their shit together and mobile chips are gimped compared to their desktop counterpart
Yeah, this pisses the fuck out of me. Especially with the whole Spectre and Meltdown meme now, it sucks. All gaming laptop needs are good CPUs.

i just got a laptop with one of those
really fluid, thin and nice

8GB is enough retard.
If you want to watch porn while you play GTA or something you can always upgrade it.

>GeForce MX150

It's fucking shit

I have the same computer, OP. I regret my purchase every day.

Shit's heavy, loud, has heating issues and can't even play the more heavy games. I also had to completely remove the battery because it was making the computer reset when the temps reached a certain `.

>notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-MX150-Benchmark-and-Specs-of-the-GT-1030-for-Laptops.223530.0.html

no ITS NOT

Just checked prices in my country and nah, I could put beastly hardware in a tower for the price of a mid gaming laptop. And I'd have plenty left for a quality display.

But if you're moving a lot, all the power to you.

My laptop's hooked up to my 4K TV lol

The heat and battery consumption is crazy tho, but that basically common problems of every gaming laptop.

gaming laptops are great
quit being nerds

My laptop gets super loud. Only downside. I gotta pop on some headphones.
