Is using the word "pretentious" a legit criticism and argument?

Is using the word "pretentious" a legit criticism and argument?

Not unless you clarify what it is that's pretentious.

Yes if it's a western game.

It’s the most legit, once you bust that one out theres no more argument

sometimes

if you can explain what makes it pretentious

depends what is deemed "pretentious". What makes something great written and deep vs pretentious

Not an argument.

This

it's legit if the criticism is used properly, i.e. if it's describing something that attempts to feign depth or complexity while actually accomplishing neither. but just calling something pretentious without explaining what exactly it is is a cop out and not an argument.

I mean when people here call a game like for example Bloodborne, Talos Principle or other indie games similar. What makes those games pretentious?

ask the people who say that, not me

idk

I guess bloodborne kinda leaves a bit to the imagination like its trying to say "not everything can be explained through words" but this may come off as pretentious to people who dont try to delve in to the lore a bit. Same goes for the new Blade Runner

pretentious is a word, its not critique or an argument.

I can understand why people think Bloodborne is pretentious but it isn't pretentious in any way.

Bloodborne really isn't pretentious, though. It's an examination of human beings blaming something higher than themselves conceptually on supernatural events. The whole thing is a metaphor for superstition and the idea of cosmic horror

It's even partially based on an Early Modern English text called Journal of the Plague Year. Give it a read some time and you'll see what I mean

What's wrong with being pretentious?

I don't get why people act pretentious especially with youngsters nowadays they all seem to want to be "cool and different" while thinking they're higher intellectuals than other people. When it comes to video games they just want their autism 2000 and act like they're some special snowflake

OP see here's a good example of being pretentious

>What's wrong with being an insincere brainlet?

You just made it sound ridiculously fucking pretentious

pretentious=/=as genuinely deep
SH2 is genuinely deep
Something like batman v superman dawn of justice is pretentious

is Dark Souls pretentious?

Never. To call something pretentious is to declare yourself the ultimate authority on a text and its medium, to know without a doubt what the text is attempting but failing to be. You don't know the creator's mind and it wouldn't matter if you did. Pick a different word, pretentious is a shortcut for people who lack the awareness to know why they dislike something or are too ashamed of other superficial gripes to voice them.

>tfw someone calls a game "boring"
>I literally have no counter-argument

Batman v Superman isn't pretentious it's just shit

>tell someone this story has genuine themes that it discusses
>even link it to an early english story to show that the setting and themes mesh well with one another considering bloodborne obviously draws influence from the city of London

Are you a brainlet? To be pretentious is to claim you have actual themes without really exploring them. Basically set dressing just for show. Bloodborne explores it's themes pretty thoroughly and with a lot of excellent tact

Just because something has heady themes doesn't mean it's pretentious. You can literally look up what the word means and see for yourself dummy

Nah it's legit deep story on despair and misery and being that one light to make things better but ultimately being the world to an end.
This. Hard to argue that cause people find different things fun. I guess you can say "you got shit taste" but that just comes off as mad

Bloodborne is only pretentious if you're a monogoloid lorefag that doesn't recognize that it's primarily intended to be a fun hack and slash set in iconic horror settings from the 19th and early 20th century, the story and themes are tertiary.

...

No it totally is.
Batman v Superman tries to talk about "what would happen if someone like superman was real" but because it also tries to be a comicbook movie it doesn't really have the balls to truly answer that question in a believable way or even iterate on it
it has themes of transhumanism, justice, law and order, and so on but doesn't explore them at all and uses them to try to make it seem deep without actually exploring them at all.

>I like it

>What's wrong with being fake

There isn't a single thing wrong with being pretentious. The term is used by brainlets who don't understand the thing they are talking about.

how do you know without a doubt that I don't know without a doubt what the text is attempting to be? that's pretty pretentious of you.

t. pretentious fag

Dark Souls is just obscure by design. There is no coherent writing, so you have to piece bits of lore together for the game's world to start making some sense, and even when you do it's just a myriad on small seemingly interconnected stories with no clear message. Everything is intentionally left up to interpretation, and people who enjoy doing that may end up seeing a lot more than there really is.

Generally, there are a lot more pretentious fanbases than there are pretentious games.

Spec Ops: The Line is a pretentious game if you want an example of one. The biggest trick up its sleeve is one heavy handed message, and if you see through it before falling for it, you are left with fucking nothing.

Yes.
