Yakuza

So I've bought a copy of Yakuza 3 and it just gives me infinite 'Now Loading' during that Tamiya meeting when you ask him questions. I'm really upset so let's have a Yakuza thread.

bump

Bought the reprints. Does it really go downhill after Yakuza two? Any master infochart on the series for reference?

I think I might've just given up on Y3 if it froze on me, the part you were on was just one massive exposition dump too if I remember right.

>Does it really go downhill after Yakuza two?
You're not going to get an absolute consensus on it

Personally I thought 3 was really bad but with a few highs in there
4 starts out really great, then gets dumb around halfway through the third character's chapter but I still found it enjoyable throughout
5 is long as fuck even by this series' standards and the character chapters were not of equal quality to each other at all
0's just as dramatic and dumb as 5 but condensed and has a lot of the fat trimmed which benefits it a lot

That's just my opinion anyway.

But I really wanted to finish the game

Gameplaywise, it only gets better. The story has some dumb plot points, but people overexaggerate, all the games are good.

You have my condolences in any case user, how much did you pay for 3? I hear it's fairly pricey nowadays

15 bucks

Atleast you didn't pay tons for it then, I've seen people talk about paying way more for the game than that.

True

hokuto ga gotoku is related right?
now how does this madman do it

Wonder if we'll get Kiryu's VA singing Ai Wo Torimodose in the obligatory karaoke minigame

we've actually seen what they seem to be doing with the karaoke minigame now. Essentially it's timed button presses while kenshiro runs around a room healing patients

>they're reusing mr. shakedown again
sad

Looks pretty weird to be honest, but it works I guess.

I finished yakuza 0 but just have the plat left to do and kiwami setting on my shelf. Should I finish the plat then start kiwami or start kiwami now? I have 50% more of the completion list and legend playthrough

It depends, do you lose interest easily? Platting it is a chore and takes time, I'd say go for Kiwami first in case. If you are a turboautist and will do both regardless then suit yourself.

QTE combat lol

It gets better gameplay and mechanics wise, but worse in terms of story.
0 is where story picks back up, but after that it just keeps getting worse (6 and Kiwami 2)

Collections anyone? Post 'em.

I'll do both eventually. How easy is kiwami compared to 0? I read 0 is 120 hours and kiwami is 80.

Is your disc scratched?
I suggest cleaning it up, cleaning your PS3, deleting the Data Install (not your save, just the data install) and redoing that and trying again.

>tfw they completely dropped the fully voiced dialogue for kiwami 2 when 6 had it
fucking shit

How to get into Hokuto no Ken:

Anime for first time, there is a bit of filler but only at the start and half of it is actually much needed character development that manga didn't have at the beginning since it was written as a one-shot due to not expecting success.
It also rotates some early events chronology to make better sense than in the manga.
And most importantly while artwork obviously isn't anywhere near as good as manga, the voice acting, music and direction are absolutely top of the line 10/10 material.
Watch anime, you won't regret it, here's highest quality you can get for the series:
Hokuto no Ken 1: nyaa.si/?f=0&c=0_0&q=fist north star x264 ac3
Hokuto no Ken 2: nyaa.pantsu.cat/view/923302
Manga: nyaa.si/view/879993

The anime adapts all of the manga up to chapter 210 (beginning of Volume 24), after you're done with that you can either read manga from the start but mind you that the scans are mostly terrible and very rough translation, especially in the middle, or you can read the manga from Volume 24 to the end which is the portion that the anime didn't adapt.

You should also read the interquel set between events of HnK1 and HnK2 that Hara made for 30th anniversary of the series, naturally it's canon.
hokutodestiny.com/file/47-hokuto-no-ken-last-piece-part-1-english-translation.html
hokutodestiny.com/file/49-hokuto-no-ken-last-piece-part-2-english-translation.html

After that you can read the (non-canon) spinoffs (also included in the manga torrent) and watch the anime adaptation of the only one of the manga spinoffs that wasn't translated, you can get it here:
nyaa.si/view/904978

After that you can watch the movies, the original 1986 movie which is basically a huge advertisement for the anime, as well as the late 00s 25th anniversary movie pentalogy that serves as abridged versions of the bigger arcs of the series with new OC material thrown in, you can get them here:
nyaa.si/view/884962

>he didn't 100% all yakuza games and its spin-offs
lol what a gay

Are there any not-dead torrents for Ten no Haoh, hnk user?

Also I'm happy to say that the HnK2 torrent is being seeded again since it was down for a while, you can safely grab it if you couldn't before.

>Anime for first time
anime is ugly as fuck, only good thing about it is the music, and voices.

The anime is trash, people only like it because it's a classic, but the manga is 100% better. I really hope that someday we get a full remake that does the story correctly with the proper colors and designs, and no ridiculous filler.

>anime is ugly as fuck
Only in early episodes, quality picks up after Shin and even more so later on. Also the pasta straight up tells you the artwork isn't as good as manga but makes up for it with literally everything else.

one day

The one on Nyaa is seeded, only 1 seed but it works, I checked earlier today.

>ridiculous filler
>~12 episodes out of 152
>ridiculous filler
Please kill yourself, especially when you're so autismal that you can't appreciate all the things anime did right and focus only on how the artwork is worse. Not to mention modern anime would look thousand times worse because budgets nowadays are 1/10 of what they used to be in the 80s and talent is nonexistant.

>Is your disc scratched?
I think no?
>deleting the Data Install
Already tried it
Thx anyway

If the disc isn't damaged then honestly it sounds like it may be problem with your PS3.

The filler is ingrained in the story itself, I don't remember the details, but they changed stuff and retconned among the real story, though not as bad as Saint Seiya.

I can appreciate what they did right, but it's just not worth it. It's also classic Toei's slow as snails pacing. It's good in context, but from a modern perspective it's just bad, and that's what newcomers have to know, especially since the manga holds up a lot more.

Your view of modern anime is biased, there's still many good studios and a lot of talent. If they did a remake it'd have a decent budget, that's kind of the point.

PS3 is such a crappy system desu. Fuck this 'disc only' meme, sega is retarded

They didn't retcon literally anything other than making Devil Rebirth and God Land happen before Shin rather than after Shin and that's actual objective improvement to both story and pacing.

>actual objective improvement to both story and pacing.
Look, you clearly have your own opinion and that's alright, but you can't just state that like it's a universal truth. This discussion is going nowhere and I really don't want to go into specifics because my memories of the adaptation and its differences are muddy and apparently I'm mixing some changes with Saint Seiya, but my main point is that if you want to recommend something in a more believable way, leave it to the one you are recommending to. When you say start with the anime, instead of letting them choose, you are imposing your opinion as facts, and that shit is just wrong.

It's the same as when people say you should start on 1 or you should start on 0 as the only option. People can do whatever, and stating one makes the other seem like the wrong option, when it's really an alternative.

It's disc only because Yakuza 3 was disowned after the cut content controversy in the west.
The controversy was well placed which I don't deny, but it's vastly overblown and basically nothing important got cut, only few minigames (which are in other games), hostess clubs (which are copypasted in other games just like the minigames) and like 5 multi-part sidequests.
One with the suicide guy with abuse gold digger waifu (which is in every other game as well), one where you bring porn mags to a kid and then there's the hostess ones (the ones that show up in sidequest list but are actually just status for hostess completion).

tl;dr nothing important even got cut and controversy was overblown

3 and 4's stories take a lot of left field turns unlike 1 + 2's fairly straightforward stories. I haven't finished 5 yet but my fucking god it's boring. Everything is so drawn out and nothing in the story is surprising because of how many times it repeats itself. It feels so long as well.

It is factually objective truth because it makes no sense in the manga.

Manga:
Kenshiro kills Shin, gets depressed, mopes around, but then is doing Cool Guy Terminator one liners in next chapters (God Land and Devil Rebirth) and there's no design of his depression anywhere, but then he walks into Mamiya's village and remembers he was supposed to be depressed.

In the anime, because they moved those arcs to happen before Shin, this both gives Shin more presence and makes him seem like a stronger adversary (which he canonically is), but also makes depressed Kenshiro after Shin going into depressed Kenshiro in Mamiya's village make perfect sense.

>actually defending people not starting Yakuza at 1 or at the very least 0
Kill yourself, we're done here

Digital games fail a lot more often than disc games. Disc only was the norm back then, is everything before the 7th generation suddenly crap?

So because they released the content in other games it's suddenly a good thing? It's overblown, but it was still a shitty thing to do. Also, is 3 on the JPN PSN?

Aight thanks guys fuck this game seriously. What's your favorite Yakuza game?

It's sad that you are so close minded. Objectiveness is a weird concept. Also, you completely missed my point on 0 vs 1, I never said it was a good idea to start elsewhere, I said both are viable, but saying "you should start with 1" makes it seem like starting with 0 is a bad choice and viceversa, when it's much easier to just say "start with 0 or 1" and then it's clear that both are viable. Putting your bias in a recommendation is retarded when people have different opinions on what's better, but based on the earlier part of your post you don't really care what others think.

>Also, is 3 on the JPN PSN?
Pretty sure all of them are.

>So because they released the content in other games it's suddenly a good thing?
I'm just saying it's not content worth crying over, most people even straight up hate the Hostess Club, Shogi and Mahjong minigames.

>actually defending people not starting Yakuza at 1 or at the very least 0
Not that guy but I'm pretty sure most people in these threads started at 3 or 4. Of course it'd be best to start at the very beginning, same as most other franchises, but unless I'm remembering things wrong people didn't care much (partly because most games have the recaps after all) until pretty recently, why is that?

No, 3 is not digital on jap PSN or any other region, it doesn't matter.
If category says it's disc only, they literary mean it.

SEGA is just stupid then.

Kenzan, Ishin, 1, 3 are my favorites.

>it's not content worth crying over
Says you, one of the first things I do in any Yakuza game I play is go for Mahjong. It's still not a huge thing, but it's bad and defending it doesn't make sense. It's not like they removed it for time or something, it was a shitty way of localization not to alienate westerners, which is a shitty practice that gives us shit like Kazzy.

I didn't say everyone don't give a shit I said most people and you can't deny this as even looking at these threads i often see fags complaining they cannot into shogi or mahjong

A shame Yakuza 5 is digital only.

is there any counter moves like the tiger drop in kenzan, or am i out of luck?

Well that sucks because you're getting close to when Yakuza 3 goes from kinda boring to batshit insanity.

hand to hand is objective trash in kenzan, don't use it unless you have no other alternative

Oh and fuck PS3 by the way the only game it has is demon's souls

>using barehanded combat in Kenzan
You're doing it wrong

By that logic you'd remove side quests and most side content based on trophy percentages. Most people don't give a shit about most mini games, it's still awful to remove them especially since it isn't that they didn't want to develop it, it was a thing of translation, removing content that was in the original game. Even if people don't like that part, it's offensive for the translators to choose what they translate or not.

Again youre not reading what I said, i said its good that the controversy was there, i also said the controversy is overblown to the point of telling people the game is unplayable and Treehouse-tier butchered when it isn't because unlike Treehouse and 8-4 the translation isn't raped.

i know barehanded combat sucks in kenzan.
i want to know if there's a counter move similar to the tiger drop for the sword styles.

Honestly I'm fine with the filler the Shin arc had if only because he gets a lot more presence in the plot rather than appearing for two pages and then getting killed off in the manga. The only thing I straight up disliked about the anime was how they handled Rei's death by turning it into a clipshow but even that episode still had some great scenes. Hell even the censored violence doesn't bother me since they do it in a very stylized way.

Rei's cuckshed adventures were pretty good tho

Guys, calm me down, am I missing out on much by not finishing the game? I've finished all the other numbered Yakuza games

You're missing out on the best part of Yakuza 3, the hate for the game is overblown by the controversy over story irrelevant minigame sidequests and thus caused the stigma that makes a lot of people think Y3 isn't worth playing when it very much so is.
Y4 is better in every way however.

The latter half of Yakuza is wacky and dumb and is worth experiencing to be honest, speaking as someone who isn't that fond of the game overall I'd still say it's worth going through as a fan of the series.

Like I said the episode had some great scenes I just wish half of it wasn't a clipshow even if it made sense in context. But I guess it's not a real issue these days since you can skip all the clipshow parts unless you really wanna hear him reminisce.

I thought people hated 3 because of the weird setting and how it slowed down things from 1 and 2.

not much to be honest. There's one plot point in the last couple cutscenes that cames back in 4 which you should already know about hamazaki stabbing kiryu but apart from that most of 3 is pretty standalone, and you've already done all the orphanage stuff.
but that's all story wise. You'd be missing one of the best bosses in the series and some fantastic music for the final long battle

I refuse to believe enough time has passed for someone to 100% 5 without cheating yet.

The setting is the best part about Y3 though, Okinawa appears only once in the entire franchise and that's in Y3 and there's no other city like it. It really gives you that Japanese Hawaii feeling.
It's the orphanage parts that are slow, not the game as a whole.

Can anyone who emulated post what version of PCSX2 they were using and settings? I tried all the recommended settings by multiple anons but I am still having visual bugs.
Even tried different region ISO.

Thanks, yeah, I know about Hamazaki. He is so nice in 4 tho. Like a completely different person.

Yes. 3's plot gets so fucking retarded in the later half it's hilarious and worth going on the wild ride it takes you.

It's great, but going from 1 and 2 it's very jarring, and it doesn't help. It makes sense that people would dislike it coming from 2, and that general perception stuck.

I think the entirety of 3 should've just been in Okinawa with Kiryu dealing with the local yakuza and Okinawa real estate or whatever the fuck. Okinawa itself needed more shit to do in it though.

BEATIFURR EYES

Again, things blown out of proportion.
3 has the same length of the story and structure as all the other Yakuza games, same for gameplay.
You have the long intro for every game before you can fully explore each corner of the city, you have some filler in between important story bits and final boss fight.
Also 3 and 5 have the best setting, so don't know what the fuck are you talking about here.

You can't get rid of visual bugs when emulating unless you use native resolution.
You can get rid of all the bugs except misaligned bloom however and minimize the misaligned bloom by playing in 720p rather than 1080p or higher, because the bloom gets more misaligned the higher your resolution is.

Wtf, I just downloaded the latest version of PCSX2, Yakuza USA iso and it just ran perfectly

Kamurocho just has to be in the games. It's as much a protagonist as Kiryu is.

It's jarring because it's an epilogue/x years later type of deal, like Godfather 3.
You're supposed to go into it with different mindset than the first two games.

>Okinawa itself needed more shit to do in it though.
There was but a ton of it got cut out in the English localization.

It doesn't matter because even the developers couldn't bring back all the lighting and effects for the PS3 HD port, either play it on PS2 game if you care that much about the original visuals or just play whatever emulator setting looks best for you.

>things blown out of proportion.
Pretty much sums up this fanbase lately. 6 and Kiwami 2 are utter shit, if you start with 0 you are objectively wrong, 4 and 5 are slow and boring, 2 is the only good game, etc.

Even more retarded than 5? When you thought that shit couldn't get any more retarded, Aizawa turned out to be the endboss

I'm not saying my problems with it, I haven't been able to play it yet because I won't shell out 50 bucks for it, it's just my reasoning of why it had a different reception, and I've seen enough to think it's fairly accurate.

But the "jarring" aspect applies to literally all the games after 2 other than 0 so it's not fair to say Y4 gets a free pass while 3 doesn't because "it's jarring coming from 2". It's straight up hypocrisy.

I forgot to mention Yakuza 2. I'm sorry. About playing in 720, do you mean have my window screen set to 720 or only double the internal resolution?

The issue is that there is fucking annoying lines, or the bloom is too much, or no shadows.

>that moveset

You've got to be fucking kidding me..

I haven't finished 5 yet but 3 gets fucking absurd. There's a guy who gets shot in the gut and while recovering from his injury he straight up stops a rampaging bull with his bare hands and throws it.

i did 100% in JP version

Same but with HD collection and jap spiniffs

Didn't have any problems with Yakuza 2 as well, didn't even bother with all these settings

Truth to be told 6 and Kiwami 2 are bad games compared to previous ones, even Kenzan which was first full 3D next gen Yakuza game wasn't that fucked with balance issues, weak gameplay with lack of moves, horrible performance and shit ton of bugs.
Plus the lack of content in those 2 new games is also why people tend to dislike it.
Don't get me wrong, having a new engine with pretty shining graphics and popular porn stars is cool but it doesn't translate to the product as a whole to be something great.

Don't lie to me.

Wow, that's nice. Sorry for the spoilers then, user. I didn't mean to.

That settings picture IS Yakuza 2, the very start of it where you go look for Daigo.
And by 720p I mean using the custom resolution setting in GSDX and setting it to 1366x768/
And make sure to use the OpenGL renderer with the settings as in that picture, as well as latest dev build:
buildbot.orphis.net/pcsx2/

You can also use this older version of GSDX plugin that I had the most luck using with Yakuza 2 where the cutscenes were less blurry with it than on latest dev build:
mega.nz/#!1wVw0TSA!0CqrL2qDDxeCXA5-B4I8H9B01qbtBpfjw1JZ4p2ayDE

4 is also weird, but it's still in the same setting and it has a fresh start. It starts with more similar grounds, so it makes sense. Besides, some opinions aren't necessarily based on sound logic, you can be bothered more by some parts than others, and that doesn't make you a hypocrite, 4 and 3 are different in a completely different way. I don't really get why you are talking like I was the one to think this.
