I don't even care for Wolf, but he had a way more unique fighting style than any of the clones. It was even worse when they made Alph an Olimar skin, which only begs the question of why bother putting in so little effort just to make people angry? Wasting time on lazy skins when they cold have tried to bring back one more developed character will never not be a dumb design decision no matter how much time passes.

It wasn't worth giving up Dedede for the Melee clones, and it definitely isn't worth it now or ever.

I honestly think Diddy or Wario deserved to be in Melee far more than Dedede, but I know he was Sakurai's next choice

Dark pit as out the gate a seperate character and wasn't alt because Sakurai thought Dark pit shouldn't using the Sacred Treasure armor as his final smash, which is fucking stupid considering with how underdeveloped Kid Icarus lore his and Dark pit being evil reflection of Pit from a mirror world, you just give him an edgy looking version of that Armor for his models and no one would question this.

They were so low-effort because they were originally costumes. They were going to be in the game regardless.
Some even speculate that Alph was considered, but Rock Pikmin would have been redundant due to Purple Pikmin already being a thing.

My big issue is that he's a completely pointless addition from a gameplay perspective. The differences between him and Pit are so minimal they might as well not exist.

Brawl, for all its faults, handled clones the best. They had obvious inspiration from who they copied, but had enough nuance to their attacks to feel like their own characters. Dark Pit could have been a good addition if he was the Wolf to Pit's Fox. It's especially sad considering how much potential Kid Icarus Uprising has for movesets. Palutena is kind of the representative of that but it's dumb that all her best moves are locked behind the customization system.

That's because the clones here are like in Melee in development time. Brawl had a different development time, and it had hiccups too (see Sonic). It's not about "wow they were better back then", but more on different development time. Hell, even Sakurai don't consider them clones unlike the alt outfits.

Also funny you say that, Pit got so many patch changes that at this point Dark Pit apparently feels different. I don't use him, but that's apparently how it goes.

The difference is that Sakurai admitted that he's a filler character to fill the void left by the Ice Climbers who were cut in development. He was never intended to be a semi clone like Wolf or Lucas and almost no dev time was wasted on him.

The bigger crime of Smash 4 was how shit the gameplay, stages and side content was.

If Nintendo hadn't insisted on Smash 4 originally being 3DS-only then it would have been a far better game with a lot more content since they wouldn;'t have had to split time, resources, and manpower on two separate versions. I don't care how successful the 3DS version is, it was a mistake that caused both versions to suffer greatly.

So why is it a problem when Dark Pit does something not from his game, but others don't? It's not about him being a costume given some minor tweaks, it's about giving special effort to make a character who can entirely function as a different skin a different character, however minor it may be, and not to a bunch of others.

If you want to use the defense, why bother in the first place? If he had so little effort put into him, then what value does he have on the roster? If he's supposed to be a consolation addition because a totally unique character was cut, then it's a hollow gesture because it doesn't add a unique moveset and doesn't add more costumes. Adding in black pit, dr mario, and lucina only put into people's mind how many alts we could have gotten if they didn't slightly change their properties, so it was effort that would only make people more angry. It doesn't matter if costumes and movesets were made by the same people or took equal development time because most of the players (Not the spergs here) would just see them as clones.

Point is Sakurai's reasoning is inconsistent, and even if it was it doesn't justify padding out the roster with slightly altered assets to give the illusion of more content.

Corrin has more than enough unique moves to make up for it, Roy and Lucina are a semi clone/ no tipper Marth so obviously they're going to have the same move, also pretty sure different cointers have different properties so its not exactly a copy paste scenario

If clones were really zero devtime then you could have an unlimited amount of them. Not that guy, but honestly I would have preferred no character at all to Dark Pit. Just don't make that slot and put whatever meagre effort was spent on him to use somewhere else.

That's not the issue, it's that they bothered to distinguish Dark Pit from Pit but not meaningfully change his moveset enough. I don't even think it would have taken that much extra work. A few tweaked variables and animations across the board would have been enough. Not even 1/100th the effort it would have taken to make an actual character. Even the differences between Pikachu and Pichu are more substantial than Pit and Dark Pit.

Alph with Flying and Rock Pikmin instead of White and Purple could have worked. The moveset doesn't really need to change, just what the Flying Pikmin do (since Rock Pikmin would function identically to Purples in Smash). It doesn't make much sense for Alph to have underground Pikmin and the Hocotate ship.

Dark Pit had a lot more potential but didn't live up to it. Likewise, he's still perfectly capable of using the same weapons Pit does, even the Three Sacred Treasures. I don't remember there being any kind of "the wielder must he pure of heart" requirement or anything.

Lucas's similarities to Ness are superficial. Nearly all of his normals are different, only his specials and side smash are similar

You can be as upset as you want but it doesn't change the reality of the situation. Sure you can say you'd prefer nothing to a clone character but not everyone will feel that way; even people who don't particularly like Dark Pit to begin with. But don't pretend that you'd have gotten a better alternative, because there wasn't one.

Fox already has a clone with Falco, but Ness didn't until Lucas' release
