I've been saying it since 2016, the waning hype and passion in the competitive Smash community is palpable and the scene is going to die if something doesn't change quick i.e. an amazing new non-port non-mod game coming out that has actual depth that can keep a competitive scene afloat. Say what you want about competitive Smash but even the people who used to love it have gotten it out of their systems after it finally started getting its fair shake from FGC events like EVO around 2013. Both games are losing hundreds of entrants from the previous year at majors like EVO, Big House, and Genesis. It's not the Apex 2015 honeymoon phase anymore, when the only place to go was up and people actually attended/watched shit like Xanadu and university campus locals just to get their fix. Top players won't talk about it because it's their paycheck right now, a guaranteed 4 figure payout for one weekend. More people accepting the passion is gone and not showing up is less money in a pot that gets no bonus from Nintendo.

I feel it too. Heck, many top players can just live off streaming now so they dont bother trying in tournament, Mang0 is the epitome of this but there are other examples as well. Melee felt unstoppable in 2015-2016 but things are slowing down now. Still looking forward to Genesis though .
