My favorite is 7 but I suspect I have an unpopular opinion. There was a picture going around talking about what version to play each and every DQ, wish I had saved it. Long story short if you don't have autism go with 3ds.

"Basic Japanese, still not there with the kanji" to me sounds like "I know kana and have 0 reading experience". He can still go for 3ds and furigana and all, but to be honest it's not really that much fun playing a game when you have next to 0 vocabulary and must search like 15 out of 10 words you see, not to mention grammar and actually understanding things in your head.

But yeah, if he wants to go for that "joy" ride, 3ds is the way to go.

I remember reading somewhere that the tedious, repetitive battles involving minimal player input through tactics were actually a good thing and a major draw of the series. What's the reasoning behind that exactly? And does this philosophy persist in all DQ games or did they eventually drop it?

I haven't played a DQ game in a very long time but I get bored if there's no substance to the battle system. I would like to try the series again by picking up one of the newer games and getting into the right mindset to appreciate the series for what it is.
