Every codebase but goonstation has open sourced their code for the better part of the community.
The irony being goonstation is now so terribly behind compared to everyone now they are using said code to attempt to keep a playerbase. Guess that's what happens when you let sjws run your server.

Despite what AAA devs want you to believe, physics is not that taxing or hard these days.
I mean the ragdoll isn't even fully simulated, it's just a center point moving (or sometimes not) and the body being told to lie down without animation, which can be done client side no problem.

The items all scattering with physics (and presumably the body too if there's going to be body collisions) wouldn't be able to be handled clientside if you wanted the game to actually function online.

The physics themselves aren't super demanding but synchronising them online sure is.

It has nothing to do with being taxing, it has to do with gameplay-important data being tied to physics. The issue isn't one of hardware but of replication and de-synchronization, replicating all those physics objects will be a nightmare, expect items appearing in different positions for different players and a lot of "oh look I got hit by a flying fire extinguisher even though it flew 1m to my left on my end". On top of that there is no clientside prediction for physics objects so you'll have to deal with the full latency when seeing shit.

Well if the devs know anything, a simple octree will do. I mean there's already culling for stuff like audio when the boombox was thrown. Just focusing on grabbing items from at most 4 chunks (standing in the middle of them) means 4 smaller packets at worst, and a lot quicker synchronising them.
How Oxygen Not Included handles small items by automatically stacking them together when they touch would go a long way though.

Why does there need to be serverside physics? Can't you simply apply the same physics impulse on every game client? As long as the math is not random, the result should be the same.

It is, and due to floating point calculations, they always will be.

The only physics that is client side in multiplayer is commonly unimportant can-clip-through stuff like ragdolls, which is why you can exclusively be laughing at something amusing in e.g. TF2 and nobody else would see it.
That said as long as it's not a variety of liquids and gasses these idiots are making it way overblown, Star Citizen managed something like this already and only has a problem because it doesn't know when to stop telling people about things now hundreds of thousands of kilometers away, which is absurdly out of SS13 clone scopes let alone most games.

No it fucking won't, there's a good reason for multiplayer games being light on physics. You can say what you want about AAA games but almost always the people working on them know their shit a whole lot better than amateurs or indie devs. 99% of physics in online games is cosmetic only and doesn't affect gameplay. Not only is it an issue of synchronizing all the movements of the physics actors, you also gotta deal with 100ms or higher latencies which cause massive issues.

The simple reason for multiplayer games being light on physics is consoles; nothing more, nothing less.
Siege has fully destructible houses, and is ported to work on consoles just fine, with the main issue being client-side destruction failing to sync in the first year and a bit where one player can see murder holes others cannot and will just walk into.

Get yourself PC that can run low poly at 4k 280FPS and you can get dedicated servers to crunch it even better, can just throw some network compression in while you're at it.

Oh and sweetie, AAA devs don't know shit when they always understaff programmers for artists.
