CDPR needed to give the player a reason to sympathize with Nilfgaard.

Because that's literally what being a Witcher is all about.

The complexity of it is completely removed, yet it's done on such a grand scale, you get to decide the fate of the entire continent and the isles like it everything depends on you, and everything has the depth of a puddle. Even Witcher 2 which had a lot of exposition and world-building didn't let you just A or B the fate of the entire world.

TW3 has way less politics but the game is better in every fucking possible way than TW2 and TW1 in terms of how well made world is, how many remarkable quests and characters it has, how amazing it looks and how smooth it works.

And even if you kill Radovid, nothing changes in Novigrad at all.
